From the previous thread:

now D-ABYD to join the fleet. ...and from 13th September add BLR to that list.

I'm due to fly BLR-FRA on the 748 next weekend, and was checking the fraport website, it seems like the FRA-BLR is being operated by the same frame D-ABYD both yesterday and today. I was not able to find information from further back - but does LH rotate it's 748s over the 3 destinations, or do they have the same frame do the same destination all week long?

No, it's scheduled today for a customer acceptance (C1) flight, delivery :TBD.

Perhaps Boeing and ABC are planning a double delivery, together with L/N1463/RC604, also on the flight line with a delivery date : TBD.

I apologize, I haven't been following this thread too closely, but... have all of the 748s requiring change incorporation been delivered? Are there more 748s in storage?

? = Not confirmed
*= Only one (1) source : http://lh-taufnamen.de/lufthansa
**= Boeing Customer code not known.
***=Boeing internal airline code CGC = Air China Cargo . However no “not identified “ customer is added to the Boeing order list. Aircraft are probably leased from a still unknown lessor (GECAS, DAE ??) seen the fact that a direct order (or a changed order from the 747-8I to -8F) must have been reported to the HK stock exchange. The Boeing customer code could be -FT (Air China Cargo) or the customer code of the lessor.

What's the deal with line numbers 1433 (RC553 in 747classic's list) and 1438 (RC554) for Cathay Pacific? They've already taken delivery of two earlier frames by line number and several later examples as well. I would imagine that they weren't delivered out of the box for the same reason that the three Atlas NTUs haven't been (apparently,) that they don't perform as well as later builds, but plenty of "early" frames are now delivered and in service. Is it just a case of Boeing prioritizing other refurbishments and deliveries over these?

I believe CX Cargo has deferred some deliveries due to the weak cargo market - these may be those deliveries.

We are quickly approaching the 50% mark on 747-8 production. Hopefully we will see some more orders or even just firming of previously announced orders by years end.

I know we are supposed to be somewhere around 1.5-2 frames a month, but at what frequency are position changes occurring?

N458BJ (HZ-HMS1) B747-8JA BBJ Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz has been flown from San Bernadino, CA (KSBD) to Lackland AFB, TX. (KSKF).
It is understood the owner has died a year ago (October 22-2011) and the future of the aircraft is uncertain.

See : http://boeing-test-flights.blogspot....j-hz-hms1-b747-8ja-bbj-prince.html

" Speculation Mode On " :
Will the aircraft be transferred to the only remaining 747-8/BBJ customer #9 or could this be the opportunity for the USAF to obtain a relative cheap " green " airframe ?
" Speculation Mode Off ".

Aircraft data : L/N 1446 - 747-8JA , RC004, serial number 40065 , BBJ customer : Saudi Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud (Kingdom Holding Company), test registration N458BJ, registration HZ-HMS1 , white livery, F/F May-30-2012, Acceptance date: June 29-2012, Delivery flight (N458BJ- CYVR-KSBD) date July 9-2012. D-ABYF is expected to be delivered to Lufthansa at October 23 . It will be the 4th 747-830 delivered to Lufthansa.

The delivery date of the first assembled 747-830, the second 747-8I test aircraft (RC021/D-ABYE) , original scheduled also to be delivered in 2012, has been slipped to 2013.

N852GT has been operated since the delivery flight with a PAC call-sign (Polar Air Cargo), see :
http://www.flightradar24.com/data/airplanes/n852gt
Following info is available at the official Atlas site : http://www.atlasair.com/holdings/news-events.asp?Pressid=595

AFAIK the aircraft is still painted in Atlas Air livery .
Latest available picture at date October 6 in Honkong (Chep Lak Kok)

Original uploaded by flyboy104, for other sizes see : http://www.flickr.com/photos/54865173@N07/8060862035/

I doubt that it will be repainted, until the first HMV( or if a new longterm lease contract emerges for a demanding external customer, requiring a new livery)

Here is the following info about the Atlas Air ownership construction :

Polar and Atlas Air, along with Titan Aircraft Leasing, are all owned and controlled by AAWW (Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings). DHL owns 49% of Polar.
Polar is just an operating certificate with certain routes. Polar has a DO and a Chief Pilot and planes that are painted in Polar colours...that is all.

The CEO/COO/VP Flight Ops/DO/Check Airman/Captains/FIrst Officers that operate the Polar and Atlas airplanes are all Atlas employees. All of the pilots that were formerly Polar or Atlas pilots are all on one seniority list and are all now Atlas pilots.
The first two -8Fs that are operated by Atlas crews are painted in Panalpina colours (Atlas already has three -8Fs that are flown by GSS (Atlas owns 49% of them and BA 51%).

Any future aircraft will be ordered by AAWW and allocated to whichever company (Polar, Atlas, GSS, Titan) that AAWW wants them to go to.

Reserved by Atlas is the following N-registration block for the future 747-8F fleet : N850GT till/incl. N876GT
See the entry for the N854GT in the FAA data base : http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinqu...Num_Results.aspx?NNumbertxt=N854GT

Still think about the first three Atlas-NTU's, despite performance issues they could easily do their jobs as packages freighters for Polar/DHL as mtow limitations should not be the factor on that operations. I just hope the aircraft get their new home as soon as possible.

Then there are the three Atlas Air early-build underperforming 747-8Fs. But as far as I know those are all the unsold "white tail" 747s Boeing has right now (someone correct me if I'm wrong.) There may be some others off-lease from a previous operator but that's not really the same thing I don't think.

After that the tangent ended. So I just want to make sure if I have my facts right and this thread seems as if it would know. Thanks!

How much more refurb will RC501 need after coming back from PDX? I had assumed that all the refurb work would have been done in San Antonio and that it would be ready for delivery after being painted.
There are some engine fixes that need to be incorporated, and a few structural issues the customer wants Boeing to look into. Nothing major

Are all presently delivered, but early produced airframes also capable to operate at the higher structural weights, that are standard in all aircraft delivered after April 2012 ?
AFAIK LX-VCE is one of the first aircraft delivered from Boeing with the improved operational weights (increase in the maximum takeoff weight by 6 tonnes to 448 tonnes.)
Are these " structural issues " perhaps part of a structural modification for operation at higher weights on the early produced airframes ?

Are you talking about LN1416 (RL571) and 1419 (RL572 the last -400) which were originally headed for LoadAir Cargo of Kuwait? According to this article they were delivered so they wouldn't be classified as white tails any more but I don't believe they were ever put into service with LoadAir.

I guess you could call them "bastards" as I believe they both had some new avionics that were going to be used on the -8.

I know Boeing did away with customer codes, but they still have the lists available on the internet. It appears as though LQ has not been assigned, so one can only guess. Has Bahrain's government/kingdom taken any Boeing aircraft in the past?

Nippon Cargo Airlines 747-8F introduction scheme ?

NCA was one of the launching customers with a total order of 14 aircraft, placed in 2005(8) and 2007(6) . But at that time the sky was still the limit in the Cargo business.
The economic stand-still in Japan and later the world-wide recession(s), put a heavy burden on NCA, despite the collapse of JAL (Cargo), so extra NCA line number positions were not assigned, after the first three NCA (test )aircraft RC521,522 and 523 were assembled.

With RC522 departing for Victorville for short/long term storage ????????, I was wondering if the latest NCA 747-8F fleet introduction plans are available on the WW.web.
So, I did some research to reveal their (revised) plans. I found some updated (April-27-2012) info about the fleet planning in the published NCA Medium Term Business Plan on the NCA site, called " NCA Phoenix Rising ", see :
http://www.nca.aero/e/profile/plan/documents/PRP_E.pdf

In this document the 747-8F introduction schedule for this year and the next two years are listed.

NCA Fleet Planning (April 27-2012)

Conclusion : a slow 747-8F introduction, two in 2012, three in 2013 and three in 2014.
The main drive is replacement of 744F aircraft, with only a modest fleet increase.

But how does this compare with the presently known 747-8 aircraft firing order (provisional and can be changed at any moment) . All estimated FAL roll-out date calculations are made with the existing assembly rate of 2/month.

- L/N 1431 - RC523 - JA13KZ - Delivery flight Aug 01-2012
- L/N 1422 - RC522 - JA12KZ - VCV storage or delivery 2012
- L/N 1469 - RC524 - JA14KZ - FAL roll out Nov 2012, Delivery 2012 or 2013
- L/N 1479 - RC525 - JA15KZ - FAL roll out July 2013, delivery 2013
- L/N 1485 - RC526 - JA16KZ - FAL roll out October 2013, delivery 2013
- L/N 1421 - RC521 - JA11KZ - will return in 2013 from Lackland AFB after refurb., storage or delivery 2013
- L/N 1487 - RC527 - JA17KZ - FAL roll out November 2013, delivery 2014?

Conclusion : the aircraft assembly rate will have to be reduced to 1.5/month or some changes to the firing-order (hopefully with additional freighter orders) will have to be made to keep the NCA 747-8 assembly in line with the current NCA 747-8F introduction planning.
Also possible is a temporally storage of the early frames RC521 and 522, until the cargo market recovers.

Peter.

I am (sadly) not alone with my doubts about sustaining the rate at 2/month, if no new 747-8 orders emerge this or next year.

In a Flightglobal article about the 787 delivery slots, Ray Conner, president of Boeing Commercial Aircraft, is reviewing plans to ramp up to two 747-8 deliveries per month, and taking a less strident approach than his predecessor on speeding up delivery rates. "The cargo market has flattened," he said.

? = not confirmed
NTU = not taken up
TBD = to be decided.

Any updates and/or corrections are highly appreciated,

Peter.

Maybe I'm missing your meaning? But, US manufactured goods returning to the US do not have to pay any tax/duty... unless something has changed recently??

What you're talking about is something that leaves the US. They need to leave the US ie go to Canada and be "exported" to be allowed to continue to where the mod work is being done in the US.

501 is having some type of issues. They had the beacon on for a good 45 minutes and even started the engines. They shut it down and everyone walked back into the paint hangar.

A interesting article about the 747-8 series has been revealed by Flight Global.

- An overview about the difference with the 744.
- flight testing history.
- The targets for end 2013 : Boeing will undertake a major flight-test programme in mid-2013 to clear the GEnx PIP (including a 4% thrust increase), FMC 3.0 update and the modifications needed to reactivate the tail fuel tank.
Also a weight saving program for an empty weight saving of 5000 lbs must be completed at the same time.

Wonder if they're going to use RC021 (LH's future D-ABYE) for that. This might be the reason that the delivery is postponed (into Sept. 2013?). Also one of the Atlas NTU's are potential candidates.

The schedule says "intermediate inspection" and "work squawks" between the B-1 and C-1 flights.

True the customers are all over the airplane from the day it enters the factory (some more so than others), but to keep the terminology straight, all the issues that the customer writes up through the entire process and while its on the ground between flights are called "customer pickups"--any major issues that occur after the airplane is released for flight (B-1, C-1 etc) are "flight squawks" or just "squawks" which is what the schedule is talking about.

The 747-8 scheduled assembly order (firing line) has been been revised :

Air China Cargo airplanes changed to Cathay Pacific.

LN 1483, 747- 8FTF, RC631, Air China Cargo #1 is now 747-867F, RC561, Cathay #11
LN 1484, 747- 8FTF, RC632, Air China Cargo #2 is now 747-867F, RC562, Cathay #12
LN 1486, 747- 8FTF, RC633, Air China Cargo #3 is now 747-867F, RC563, Cathay #13.

These three Cathay airframes are not yet ordered. AFAIK the original order was for 10 aircraft only, presently 10 assembled, 8 delivered, with no further options and/or delivery slots.

Will Cathay lease these aircraft to Air China Cargo or, with two early built Cathay airframes (RC553 and RC 554) still not being delivered, will we see some early airframes leased to Air China Cargo and Cathay taking the newer ones ?

Did Cathay finally made the decision to purchase more new freighters i.s.o. holding on to the "old" strategy of (partly) operating with converted (747)freighters.

See for Background info about Cathay's current fleet strategy, this flight global article : http://www.flightglobal.com/news/art...l-change-in-cargo-business-379296/

Yes N852GT is in regular Atlas Air livery and on the Atlas Air operating certificate. The airplane is operated under contract with DHL and Atlas uses the Polar callsign for its DHL contract flights, regardless of paint scheme or what operating certificate the airframe is on. As I'm sure you know Atlas/Polar are owned by the same holding company (Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings) and they use the same pilots/mechanics/dispatchers, etc. The Polar certificate is kept alive due to certain route authorizations and other technical/contractual reasons.

747-8 roll out dates are a function of the actual assembly rate. With a sustained rate of 2/month, FAL roll-out of L.N 1483, 1484 and 1486 will be in the June-August 2013 time frame.

Aircraft data : L/N 1467 - 747-87UF, RC580, serial number 37572, Atlas Air #10, N853GT, Polar/DHL Express livery, F/F November 26 -2012, expected delivery : end of November 2012 (probably December ??)

After a B-2 and B-3 yesterday and an aborted C-1 today it looks like they reflew (C-2/C-1 profile) this afternoon. If everything worked okay it should be ready to "ship".

My reasoning was that some airlines, if they're delaying the delivery of a particular airframe, simply assign the reg to the next-in-line aircraft, and so on. But I guess you have a point

Maybe they rethink about it when it really comes in 2015. But the 744's weren't delivered as well in the correct order.

The most likely candidate is RC601/VQ-BGZ, one of the early produced airframes. RC604, the other ABC aircraft at the flightline is AFAIK still unpainted.

The mystery about this aircraft seems to be solved.
I got the following PM from a fellow 747-8 follower :

"It's not for the Qatar Amiri Flight - they don't use these colours any more.

The colour scheme shows it's 99% certain to be for the FORMER ruler of Qatar, Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani*, who was deposed in 1995 by his son, and is the current operator of 747SP VP-BAT.

Having a different customer would also explain why it's a 747-8ZV, and not a 747-8KB, like A7-HHE and A7-HJA"

As far as I can see Air China has ordered 5 -8Is therefore should be -8J6I where are these in the firing line?

I can see Boeing not wanting to announce the Air China -8Is have been changed to Air China Cargo -8Fs.

Have the 5 -8J6Is have become 3 -8FTFs which have become -867Fs (CX)

However, Boeing's internal production list did show three 747-8 Freighter production slots assigned to Air China Cargp.

Those slots are now evidently assigned to Cathay Pacific Cargo. However. Cathay Pacific Cargo has not yet announced a top-up order (as these would be new frames and not part of their original order for 10).

How did Air China Cargo get three frames initially assigned in the firing order without actually ordering the A/C?

They have to be slots made available by the order of -8Is by Air China right?

Perhaps a "we don't want the first 3 -8Is so we will make them into -8Fs"

And "we don't even want the -8Fs so well arrange for CX to take them" ?

I assume they have/had an MoU or LoI that assigned them slots, but they had to commit to them via a firm order by a certain date or they would be released and assigned to someone else.

AA, for example, has an MoU with Boeing for 787-9 production slots even though AA has yet to firm their order. Some 18 months before a slot's date, AA must either confirm they are taking that 787-9 (by placing a firm order) or they give it up and Boeing can assign it to another customer.

There is a thread on "Fragrant Harbour" dealing with Cathay getting unannounced 747-8Fs from Air China Cargo. It is also being reported that the part of the "swap" has CX transferring/selling all of their 777Fs to Air China Cargo in return for their 747-8Fs. Interesting that a current user of both the 777 and 747-8F is looking to acquire more of the 747. If this indeed true, it looks like my username is safe and the fleet is going to grow!

I had heard that CX want more passenger 777Fs and had converted the slots from freighters into passenger ones. I'm not sure whether thats true or whether they can even do that a year from the first 77F delivery.

Other internal documents still show the 777F order as being current with registrations assigned already.

What I read/gathered had Cathay leasing/selling all of their 777F slots to Air China Cargo and in return, receiving 747-8Fs. To a certain extent it makes sense. The cargo market is down and if the rumors are true, Cathay reduces the number of NEW freighters inboud for its fleet and is able to keep the cargo side of the house strictly 747.

Good article in Av Daily today about the struggling 747 market, particularly the 747-8F.

Excerpts:
In January, Boeing was hopeful that air freight would start to climb out of a prolonged slump this year in its big three markets–Asia, Europe and North America. Now it says it will have to “hold its breath” until 2014.

While production rate buildups are proceeding smoothly on every other program, the 747-8 is the only one where too much capacity is an issue. Boeing raised its rate from 1.5 aircraft per month in January to two a month in July on anticipation that freight demand would begin to grow. It has rolled out 50 747- 8s from its widebody factory in Everett, Wash., and has 14 awaiting delivery. “The challenge for us right now is the freight market,” Senior VP Pat Shanahan told a RBC Capital Markets teleconference last week. “It’s down. We’re in a little bit of a quandary right now on how to smooth out the [747] production system."

Freight traffic has declined in four of the past five years, with the only bright spot in the Middle East, where demand is up 14% so far this year.

The drop in demand is pushing all-freight carriers to park older, fuelguzzling aircraft and look to newer models. In 2006, there were 177 747-100/200s in service, more than half of all widebody full-freighters. Currently, all but 55 have been parked because their operating costs are so high. They will not return even if freight booms, says Tom Crabtree, Boeing’s regional marketing analyst for cargo.

Even the 747-400 passenger to conversion market has dried up as the operating economic advantage of a new-build 747-8F outweigh the capital cost savings of a "new" 747-400BCF / 747-400SF.

So Boeing at least can take solace that they should be able to deliver what they have in the pipeline (even Atlas Air's NTUs may have found a new home) and rumors imply that CX is ready to order three more 747-8Fs.

Well, with the youngest 742 freighters being over 21 years old now and enough 744s available for conversion and about eight relatively young 744Fs currently parked that is no surprise at all. I am even surprised that as many as 55 of those classics are still active given that Southern Air has just wfu a number of them.

That is wrong, at least in the words chosen. Of cause Boeing CAN produce them as fast as the older ones are being retired when rquired, fact is only that the ones retired now were built in the absolute 747 boom times and in most cases have reached their constructive limit.

Not having a market to sell your product to is always a sticky situation. There could be a possible upside to Boeing's current problem. There was at one time a market for 150+ 747 freighters. As earlier posted, all but 55 of these 747-100/200s have been parked. Seeing that they are 100/200s, most of them will never touch the face of God again. That is a massive market that at some point will need to be replaced. While the 777F could steal some of that market, the 747 will garner the majority of the lion's share. Boeing is only competing with itself.

So, the future looks bright but we need to deal with the here and now. Are there not airlines that currently need widebody aircraft? If the production line is looking thin, Boeing should push the 747-8I. Any 747-8I sold is an A350 or A380 not rolling down the line. Yes, it could dampen the 77W program but it is still money and market share in Boeing's pocket. Availability and ability to bring the 747-8I to an airline's fleet should be used to Boeing's advantage.

And they look that youthful only because a handful of classic frames trickled out well after -400 production was underway. As of today, only ten 747 classics are less than 24 years old (next week it'll drop to nine).

Depending the amount of fuel in the wing tanks, the over-wing doors cannot be closed again, due deformation of the door frame.
So, perhaps the Boeing crew decided to tape the door as a temporally fix, to avoid defueling. After usage of most of the fuel during the next test flight, the problem could have been solved after opening and closing the overwing door.

In airline operation, we used this method to avoid delays at outstations, with limited repair capabilities.

At the weights/fuel loads the airplanes are flown at during production flights I don't think this would be the issue.

A feature of all 747 series is that when you have opened an over-wing door (e.g. for maintenance) on the ground, you are sometimes unable to close the door again.
This is caused by the wings bending downward (caused by the fuel load in the wing tanks). Above a certain fuel load in combination with roll, this wing bending causes a slight ovalisation of the fuselage at the over wing door frames .
Now you are unable to close the door again, actually the door doesn't fit in the door frame anymore. The only option now left is (partly) de-fueling the wing tanks.

In case you have an air leak you have to open the door for a final repair. (seals etc.).
But If you have a minor air leak you can temporally tape the door from the outside ( check for proper closed position of the door handle , the door is a plug-type but can be opened in case of emergency) and depart for a final fix, without a major delay for de-fueling.

OR-

In this case , they had limited time for a repair and decided to temporally fix the airleak with tape, until the final repair could be done after the last test flight.

Good detective work, 747classic and Matt Cawby. A stubbornly leaking door would account for all the test flights.

Based on the number of "short" flights that have been made, that the weight this airplane is operating at is very low (production fuel load and empty interior--well below most if not all in service flights), that door leaks are fairly easy to fix and that the leading edge of the door was the only part taped, I think rather than a leak they have an airflow problem across the door causing a tone of some sort (a more difficult fix). A similiar problem occurred on one of United early 777's.

Hopefully whatever the issue is, it will be gone during today's flight.

Scheduled 747-8 deliveries (subject to change) for December, before the factory is (almost) closed during the Christmas - New year holiday :

December 10 : L/N 1467 - RC007 - 747-8H0-----------A4O-HMS (Oman Royal Flight), acceptance already at Dec 7 ??
December 18 : L/N 1422 - RC522 - 747-8KZF---------JA12KZ (former test aircraft #3, ex. N50217)
December 20 : L/N 1420 - RC501 - 747-8R7F---------LX-VCA (former test aircraft #1, ex. N747EX)

L/N 1463- RC604 (ABC) still TBD.

Interesting : L/N 1469 - RC524 (NCA) seems to be scheduled for re-positioning from Paine Field towards Pinal Airpark Airport -Marana AZ (KMZJ / MZJ) at the end of February (long term storage)??

In reply 70 of this thread the NCA 747-8F delivery schedule was already discussed. I am surprised that one of the early frames (RC522) will be delivered first and a newer (= Less OEW) airframe (RC524) is scheduled to be stored in the desert.

However, no info was available on FlightAware, Flightradar24, Data.Flight24 or Pudget Sound - Boeing Test Flights.

- Probably RC522 / JA-12KZ will be delivered to NCA in 2012.

- RC008 / VQ-BSK is not on the delivery list yet, the aircraft has completed a B1 and B2 flight up to now.

- RC501 / LX-VCA. The delivery of this aircraft has slid into early January. Ground crew will work through holiday break to get the airplane ready for delivery.(Several minor squawks and a touch-up of the paint on the wing).

- RC604 / VQ-BRH. This aircraft has been painted in Portland, but is still not scheduled for a 2012 delivery.

It was Lufthansa, reducing their order from 20 til 19, by choosing not taking delivery of LN1235, however they note that it might be temporarily and they might order more in Q3 2013 according to the Aviationweek article

However, he adds the airline’s long-range fleet group is due to decide on adding additional aircraft by the third quarter of 2013, some of which could include 747-8s.

I am sorry, no more deliveries are expected from PAE towards CVG in this year.

After the delivery flight of N853GT at December 4, no other Atlas Air aircraft are present on the flight line at this moment. (except the three rejected 5Y-airframes).
The next Atlas Air aircraft (L/N1471-N854GT) is now at the final assembly line in the slant position #1 (next to the hangar door) and will probably emerge from the FAL after the holidays (in 2013).

L/N1471-N854GT emerged from the FAL just before the holidays and is visible at the latest KPAE flight line photo (December 22) of Matt Cawby. Estimated delivery will probably be somewhere in mid Januari 2013.

At the same photo also visible is the first glance of L/N1470-RC026, the first Lufthansa 747-830 of the second batch of five, to be delivered in 2013.

The first Air China 747-8I appeared at the 747-8 Firing Order (subject to change, as always).

The following new slots in the firing order are allocated :

L/N 1489 - 747-8KZF, RC528, NCA #8

L/N 1490 - 747-8R7F, RC510, Cargolux #10

L/N 1491 until/incl. L/N 1498 : not yet allocated

L/N 1499 - 747-89L, RC066, Air China #1

With the current assembly rate of 2 aircraft/month, the FAL roll-out of this 747-8 Intercontinental for Air China will be around February/March 2014.

I don't think that many more 747-8 Intercontinental aircraft will be assembled in 2013, exept the already allocated five for Lufthansa.

In 2014, after all updates (GEnx-2B PIP, NGFMC 3.0 software update and tail tank issue) are implemented, after a block change, we will see IMHO an upswing of 747-8I's rolling off the assembly line.

Especially the tail tank issue (only valid for the 747-8I) could trigger some structural changes, that are more difficult to retrofit after assembly (down time - lost revenue). To avoid all these post assembly modifications of already active aircraft new customers (Air China, KAL) may have delayed assembly and delivery into 2014.

RC004 / N458BJ flown from Lackland AFB (KSKF/SKF) to Basel-Mulhouse (LFSB/BSL) for VIP outfitting., see :

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N...J/history/20121228/2100Z/KSKF/LFSB

Did the aircraft finally get a new customer (or another member of the Saudi Royal Family) ?

Aircraft data : L/N 1446 - 747-8JA , RC004, serial number 40065 , BBJ customer : Saudi Crown Prince Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud (Saudi Arabian Government ), test registration N458BJ, future registration HZ-HMS1 , white livery, F/F May-30-2012, Acceptance date: June 29-2012, Delivery flight (N458BJ- CYVR-KSBD) date July 9-2012. Owner : Bank of Utah Trustee, Salt Lake City, Utah (Corporation). Temporally stored at San Bernadino . The Future of this aircraft seems to be unsure, because the Prince passed away at October 22-2011. VIP outfitting contract with Jet Aviation (Basel) was cancelled. Ferried, again with call-sign N458BJ, to Lackland AFB TX at October 06-2012. Leased to a new customer or delivery to another member of the Saudi Royal Family ? In the photo you see RC007 with registration A4O-HMS ( "loan" engines installed) in front of the L3 hangar in Waco. The other " engine-less " 747-8I must be RC006 -N455BJ , ferried at November 2 to Waco.

Waco, TX, December 17-2012.

Present Locations & Outfitting stations of the eight assembled 747-8i/BBJ aircraft

Tabulation---------registration----Greenpoint----------------------------------VIP Outfitting Centre
number------------------------------- Aeroloft

RC001-------------9K-GAA ------- yes, presently at IAB)------------------------------?
RC002-------------A7-HHE---------yes, completed------------------------Hamburg - Lufthansa Technik
RC003-------------A6-PFA---------yes, completed-------------------------Hamburg - Lufthansa Technik
RC004-------------N458BJ---------no------------------------------------------Basel - Jet Aviation
RC005-------------A7-HJA----------yes, completed------------------------Basel - AMAC
RC006-------------N455BJ---------no------------------------------------------Waco - L3 Platform Integration
RC007-------------A4O-HMS------no------------------------------------------Waco - L3 Platform Integration
RC008-------------VQ-BSK--------yes (kit installed at Love Field)-----Dallas/Love field - Associated Air Center

Remarks :

RC004 has been flown to Basel at 28 December, but no second 747-8 contract for AMAC (also located at Basel) has been presented to the media. Probably the cancelled Jet Aviation outfitting contract has been re-confirmed by the new owner.

The location of RC008 is not confirmed yet, but after reading the following two articles and the present location of RC001 at Wichita for the Aeroloft installation by Greenpoint, it's an educated guess that the aircraft is located at Associated Air Center (DAL) :

1) - http://www.ainonline.com/aviation-ne...iated-lands-first-747-8-completion
2) - http://www.greenpnt.com/wp-content/u...ogies-Contracts-Fifth-Aeroloft.pdf

From the first article also the following is important : RC008 will probably be the first aircraft with a through-the-fuselage elevator, from an unnamed manufacturer*, that extends down to the tarmac. It will lift up to four people or one person in a wheelchair with an attendant. Installation of the elevator will add approximately 12 months to the average widebody completion time of 18 to 24 months.

* Perhaps the unnamed manufacturer is also Greenpoint Technologies, see :

That seems to line up with this:
