The only other airline I've known with so many liveries going around at the same time was AI post merger with IC. But why is Malaysian doing this?

I believe the 2nd A380 livery you've posted is not complete. When finished, it will look like the 1st A380 photo.

The B772 photo is the old livery and is being phased out I think.

I could be wrong though.

The livery on 9M-MND is indeed not complete but it will get Oneworld markings instead of the blue stripes.

They should just adopt the A380 livery fleetwide, its quite good , BTW the livery is said to be a special scheme only for the big bird, the remaining fleet will either stick with the 90s livery or the new swoosh one, though its been said the latter has been rejected and some 737s trasnferred from Fire Fly have been repainted in the 90s livery already.

The 380 livery would have been just right for Kuwait airways as it has the exact same colours.

Well that is strange then. It is a wee bit dull then. Maybe the 1st MH A380 livery was just a special livery being the 1st A380 in their fleet.

Shame, I'd have preferred to see that "swoosh" livery on all of them, the blue stripes seem a bit too busy to me and the 90s livery is, well, very outdated.

I dont believe in the outdated mantra of the airline industry anymore, too mnay airlines have changed their looks based on that farce for sometimes really bad new schemes, unless a livery is from 1960s then its outdated other wise all is well, I would have still liked PIA to have been in their 1976 livery with barely noticable tweaks.

1st photo (B772) is being phased out in favor of the 2nd photo (A330) & the A380 will be the only aircraft in the MH fleet to sport the blue wave livery... The 4th photo (A380) is incomplete, all MH A380s are delivered minus the cowling and fuselage wave which is applied in house in Malaysia...

If it's true that they plan on operating with two liveries, it's a total dog's breakfast of a branding strategy. The core of their brand - the kite, fish thingumy - is distinctly different in the two liveries. So which is it that represents the airline?

The red and blue swooshes look just terrible in real life and MH seems to have a real issue with integrating their colours with the wing - on the 330, the red swoosh just stops altogether rather than flow over the wing/fuselage join, while on the 380, the bottom blue stripes do likewise - they just stop, rather than integrate with the wing/fuselage join.

Really amateurish efforts so far.

Yes, but they've had that livery now for at least a year and so far, none of the 777s appear to have been painted. Why is this?

The real reason is company politics. When Tengku Azmil wanted to leave his mark, the swoosh livery came about - approximately 2 years ago.

Then there was a re-shuffle and Tony Fernandes (from AirAsia) came on the Board of MH, doing widespread re-shuffles in the senior management. Out went the earlier CEO, and in came a new team (lots of ex-Westjetters too!). Many believe that Tony wanted AirAsia to be the "red" airline, and MH to be the "blue" airline from Malaysia. So out went the reds from the logo and that was the new livery on the A380.

Now that Tony Fernandes is no longer arm-twisting Blues and Reds, MH new management may revert to the original livery, or keep the current blue one. There's utter confusion, and no one really knows what's going to happen. Meanwhile, happy spotting!

This is the result of so many interference from so many parties and the changes of management in such a short period of time, all of which have this 'I am better than you' attitude.

is on its way out that's for sure. All the new B738, A333 and A380 are not wearing this livery. The current B734, B744 and B772 which are wearing this scheme are on its way to be phasing out, although we could expect this livery will stay until 2014 the earliest.

is supposed to be the new official livery until the share swap between MH and AK was proposed by the Malaysian government in August 2011.


The controversial share swap, which saw massive management reshuffle, saw the new management wanted to split MH into 2 - a longhaul airline (planned to be MH) operating all widebody aircraft (A333, A380 and a yet to be announced replacement for the existing B772) wearing this livery

and a shorthaul airline (planned to be named Sapphire) operating all B738 fleet wearing this livery



The symbolic is that the blue and red MH featured in the earlier liveries are split to signify the creation of the 2 entities from the existing MH. As evident here, both the blue and red liveries for the longhaul and shorthaul airlines (MH and Sapphire) are identical, only differs in colour.

However, the share swap failed after massive resistance from so many parties, which saw another massive management reshuffling within the airline in just 1 year. This resulted in the red livery planned for Sapphire never took off.


The new current/management decided to keep the earlier new livery and (somehow) the all blue livery planned for the new MH which has already being applied on the A380s and stated that this livery will only be with the 6 A380. All future A333, B738 and the replacement aircraft for the B772 will/have been wearing the swosh livery.

The albino A380 9M-MND is earmarked to wear a special livery reported to be a oneworld livery following MH's election into the alliance on 1 February 2013.

So that will be the status for the time being.

Personally, I hate the swosh livery and am actually rooting for the red Sapphire livery to be the new standard livery as I think it is more of a modernized version of the original red MH livery.

Just which one? And the kite is facing left or right?

Just a few days ago I was wondering about what happened with MH´s apparent multiple brands. I checked the airline´s website and noticed they display the two color logo. Good, I never liked the all-blue A380 livery...

Remembering the fact that they were planning to keep distinct liveries for the fleet, and wondering what happened with that, I proceeded to check their fleet page. It´s a mess, seemingly every aircraft type graphic has a different livery; from the "original one" (747, A330, 737-400, 777), passing through the "swooshes one" (A330 "new" (?), 737-800) to the "all blue one" (A380); they all get depicted.

Personally, I don´t like at all the "all blue one": the blue shades used, and how they are combined, bothers me. And the blue.. ribbons? bands? are too massive on the 380.

I don´t like either the "swooshes one".

I do like, though, a lot, the original one. I´ve always liked it.

I would like indeed to see this livery reinstated. Or the Sapphire one. Both are much nicer than the swooshes one IMHO.

You are right, I have quite a liking for the Sapphire livery. It doesn´t look bad at all. This confirms that the shades of blue is what bothers me about the "all blue" livery. In red it looks great.

The shades of red used do not clash between themselves as the blue ones used on the blue version.

I also like the connection you pointed out with the original red MH livery.

The biggest problem I have with the all blue (and the swoosh livery for that matter) is how MAS is not painting the design on the wing to body fairing. On the the 737 that is fine (as seen in most of the swoosh liveries and the red blue strip one posted earlier) because it doesn't cut off most of the design, but when you get a huge plane with a large wing to body fairing, i.e. the A380, it is jarring...

Originally, the swosh livery is planned to be applied only on the owned new B738 (all 9M-MX* and 9M-MS* series) all of which come with the Boeing Sky Interior. The leased B738 (all 9M-ML* series) including all ex Firefly B738 are excluded hence they were painted to the now old livery. However, beginning from the 13th leased B738 (9M-MLM), the aircraft will be on the new swosh livery.

MASwings is a sub brand of MH, focusing on a rather unglamorous niche, hence why I think a different livery is adopted for brand differentiation.

Virgin Atlantic is also good with multiple liveries... Three on the go at the moment!

Rant! What on earth does that so called livery have to do with MAS, it represents nothing! It in no way fits on the A380, I mean what's the deal behind the wing? Run out of money? Imagination more like! To me the livery looks backwards and in absolutely no way highlights the graceful lines of the A380, and the A380 needs it's graceful lines helped out IMHO. (in no way an attack on the A380, It's a great aircraft, just a little podgy).

I am a fan of the euro white with bright colours, re: QF, JAL and AF (and a bit of dirt makes it more interesting), but this? It's a mess! Come up with something imaginative, stylish and one that means something or at least is favourable to all aircraft in the fleet or better still don't try and fix something that is not broken just to "make your impression known"! Rant!

What a confusing brand.

So we´ll get distinct liveries for distinct aircraft types. The A380s get to wear the all blue livery, the new 737s the swoosh one, and everything else the old (regular?) livery.

What is the plan for the A330 fleet? Several of them have the swoosh livery.

My reply #19 above was from the context of B738. All the new A333 have been wearing and will be wearing the swoosh.

If designers were to creatively incorporate a shade or two of blue in the red version of the A380 livery and add the current blue/red wau logo on that with the full malaysiaairlines title, it might solve the livery issue depending on how good it looks.

The scale of the 380 works for the new livery.
