Looking at the National Airlines (N7) timetable from April 2001 and saw that they were flying an afternoon flight to DCA from LAS, with a departure back to LAS the next morning. Did National have their own staff at DCA, or did they contract out ground handling to someone else? Did the DCA flight resume when DCA reopened in the October after 9/11?

No, because 757s weren't allowed at DCA post-9/11 (technically, it was aircraft with 156 or more seats). Rather silly, I think, especially because it contributed to (certainly not caused) a business to fail. National only flew 757s.

Sillier still because they could have just removed three rows of coach and two more seats and gotten down to 155 (their 757s apparently only sat 175). Same airplane, same danger, just fewer seats. Strange time in history.

Was their service to IAD before or after the DCA ban?

The airline was already in bankruptcy at the time of the 9/11 Attacks and had been denied a loan guarantee from the Air Transportation Stabilization Board that had been established in the wake of 9/11 and that was pretty much the final nail in the airlines' coffin as the casinos that had been bankrolling the airline were hit pretty hard after 9/11 as well and didn't want to invest anymore in the airline (which was part of the reason for the bankruptcy).

National only operating 757s was part of their failure, as it was too big of an a/c for the short hops to some of the cities they flew to like LAX and SFO.

Ehh, everybody's entitled to their own opinion. For instance, my favorite tail scheme of all time is the Blue UA tulip, yet my father hates it and loves the battleship grey, which I hate. We don't all have to agree.

Well, at least we agree on the name of the airline that had the best looking tail of all time, however my vote is for this "National:"

I'll also vote for that tail.

Off topic however; isn't that a Tenneco BAC 111 sitting on the east side of the DC-10? What a fleet Tenneco had in the glory days of their flight department. IIRC, Terminal B at IAH was the Customs/Immigration for all flights needing to clear Customs including corporate.

I was just asking. My favorite was the bunny on the tail of the Playboy DC-9!

LOL that's not a bad one, either!

But the black would probably show to much dirt for me, not that Heff probably cared.

When DCA shut down after 9-11, National flew there 2 flights to LAS out of IAD. They had a red eye come in at 6 am and turned right back to LAS, they also had a evening turn to LAS. They never went back to DCA when it opened and when the airline shut down it was still flying out of Dulles. I remember a flight coming in and the departure back to LAS was canceled since the airline had ceased flying. As the passengers showed up at the ticket counter to check in, all that they saw was a posted notice about the airline no longer flying.

Try being an (ex) employee and finding out you don't have a job via the news and a note tapped on the door! I miss my days at N7. Full service for the passengers and a great group of people to work with.
