Topic: SA Gets A380 Simulators?

Yesterday I was chatting to my dad and he mentioned that a family friend, who is pretty senior in SA Technical and works with SA's simulators, had told him that an A380 simulator has been purchased and installed by SAA.

My dad supposed that this means that SA will be ordering the A380 in the nearish future.

Has anyone heard anything about SA getting these simulators?

They are probably getting ann A330 or A320 simulator since they recently started getting deliveries of both. Why would SAA need an A380 simulator ?

I wondered if that was the case ... although SA has been flying the A320-series for years already. The A330 is fairly new to the fleet.

I know the person in question can be relied on to give accurate information ... my dad, on the other hand, may have misheard or misunderstood.

I know for sure that a CAE 7000 series A330 sim was recently installed there.
Definately not an A380

Maybe it is a flight training device, not a simulator. The newer FTDs can emulate basically any cockpit just by loading a different model. A single FTD could emulate every FBW Airbus aircraft.

Even if SA were to get A380's, one would think the announcement would predate any simulator purchase. Delivery of the aircraft would be so far down the line that SA would have plenty of time to purchase simulators and train pilots.

Isn't there a mystery A380 order right now?

John Leahy claims that Airbus is close to a "significant (whatever that means) order" but all currently known A380 orders are accounted for. (Mr. Leahy doesn't expect the order to be firm until 2013)

Don't mean to butt in, but where would SA fly their hypothetical A380's to?
Their bread and butter route to LHR from Jo'burg now sees the A332 being used instead of anything larger - if such a high volume trunk route sees them use their smallest widebody against the likes of BA/VS and all other indirect routings what chance would a fleet of A380s have of being profitably flown?

Obviously an A380 in SAA colours would look beautiful - one can dream for now I guess!
