Topic: CZ Flights From China To South America Via AKL?

CZ seem to be building a bit of a presence in AKL. There has been some speculation that CZ (and possibly other Chinese airliines) might be interested in routing flights to South America via AKL.

We of course know that LA have a codeshare with CX to HKG from SCL via AKL.

Does anyone have any information on any of this?

Interesting. What airplane would CZ use? Could the 77W do, say, AKL-EZE? I am choosing EZE because it is a SkyTeam hub like CAN.

Yes I believe the 77W could make AKL-EZE and they could codeshare with AR who recently eliminated the AKL stop from their SYD-AKL-EZE route.

The only issue is that CZ does not operate the 77W. Their primary long haul aircraft are the A380, 772ER and A332.

Haven't they ordered it? Maybe I am confused.

Yes, you are correct. I believe they ordered 10-777-300ER in February of this year.

Would ETOPS be a problem for this sort of route on a 772ER or 77W?

Yes it would. NZ did a 77W charter flight to EZE this year and I was reading about it in the staff magazine. The routing they took to remain within ETOPs restrictions was quite different to what the 340's take. Adds a fair whack of time as well if I'm not mistaken

Sounds not dissimilar to the issues VA had in operating MEL-JNB with their 77Ws.

Yep. Unless CZ deploy their A380, none of the options they have expressed interest in would really work. The A380 is too big for it though, and with no other 4 engined aircraft, they dont have much to offer.

It hasn't been just AKL they have looked at apparently, it is also SYD and MEL that also are in the mix.

Rumor says because NZ wants the traffic right between PVG-LHR. For exchange, CZ wants the traffic right from AKL to somewhere in South America. But CZ doesn't have a suitable plane for that route actually.

The plan for CZ is cooperate with Aerolineas Argentinas to extent its services to South America. CZ operate the CAN-AKL route and AR AKL-EZE. Part of this plan was informed in August when AR joined to SkyTeam. However for this plan AR needs to relaunch its flights to AKL.

Best Regards,

330 minutes ETOPS on the 77W and 77L. NZ was the first airline to buy-in. Puts AKL-EZE well within capabilities. In fact, 330 minutes puts SYD-GRU in range.

They maintain to that EDTO330 standard yes,but are not currently endorsed above EDTO 240 - this will come once the standard has been maintained for a predetermined length of time. Incidentally the 77Es are also now undergoing the same maintenance transition from EDTO180 to EDTO 240. Bare in mind that the NZ charter to EZE was operated within EDTO240, so NZ 77Es will be able to reach South America easily.CZ have expressed interest in some kind of partnership with NZ. I believe that if it was implemented that it would be on a routing like this.

The CZ 77Es currently are old and tired with very dated interiors, you may as well fly AR 342a..

So the FAA appears to be close to appoving > EDTO 180 minutes on RR/PW powered 77E's. It has long been my postion that NZ need the FAA to issue this approval before they can operate to and from South America with anything other than a 77W.

AKL-SCL should be well within the range of the A332/B772ER with ETOPS 240, but that's about it. Both LIM and EZE are a bit too far.

Could they not just have the partnership through SYD not AKL?
