My dear... Wonder his sources, TK internal presentation? Unbelievable expansion coming up in first half 2013 it seems. The FIDS at IST surely will be a sight to see once these are running!

Just a few weeks ago, Turkish announced that they flew to the most countries of any airline--90+, I believe.

Good for TK! We'll have to see how this shapes up, but I hope for the best. TK is easily one of the finest carriers I've had the pleasure of flying with and I will gladly toast their successs!

Wow, great sources!

Temel Kotil spoke about 33 new destinations in 2013. When I count the list, there are 31 of them.

I thought TK's would increase capacity in Brazil soon.
Since there is no 77W available for increasing frequencies to GRU, TK should launch a new destination that could be reached nonstop by a 332.
QR considers launching BSB, for that airport has a significant government traffic and has three domestic hubs of main Brazilian carriers.
That airport offers new opportunities for TK, like including Chile to its network with the rectilineal route IST-BSB-SCL.

everything in the fleet according to the actual booking situation; however, they tend to prefer the A319 with recently added destinations. nevertheless 319/320/321/737/738/739 are all options.

They have now 37 new destinations on their wish list. 2 of them will begin definitive 2013; Houston and Santiago de Compostela. Others are planned data. According to Temel Kotil, THY will open 33 new destinations in 2013.

Abuja-Kano, these two are waiting now for over a year (THY announced it to Stock exchange in Nov 2011). Why they are waiting so long for approval?

I have flown many West Bound transcons in the US lot longer than that.
I have done IST-NBO on a 738 and that was long. TK 739ERs have additional tanks that makes longer routes possible, especially in Africa.

Do they have the technical, managerial and safety resources to support that kind of expansion? That would worry me much more.

BTW, having been around for a while also means that one has seen it all befotre. Right now they are copying BN . The difference is that BN had no government support.

I have only seen this question being asked about TK. What makes you think TK management less capable than others? What I can tell you, TK takes advantage of an important skill which many other airlines lack in their management and employee level, which is passion towards their job.

That's an emotion. Especially when it comes to technical matters, emotions should stay out.

My question was free of emotion and based on life experience. A rapid expansion needs a solid foundation. Especially when that expansion is fuelled by political goals and backed by the government. The question is reasonable, why do you react that way?

TK needs to recruit pilots, technicians and engineers to cope with that expansion, do they train their own staff, do they have the resources? There are many valid questions, I recently checked the fare from FRA to TLV and they charge about 60% in C from what LH charges. That's fine, as long as they collect adequate fares from Germany to IST, which is backed by a solid ethnic traffic and take the transit as bonus

Still, that kind of expansion has been seen before, sometimes with bad results.

Yes, but EK bought expats from all over the world, starting with the top management, pilots, crew. B6 and FR could tap a local market with many pilots and crew available, whereby local in Ireland is all 27 EU members. At least FR could stop flying tomorrow and still would make money as a leasing outfit. They have no obligation to their crews, they are outside contractors. No comparison with what TK is up to.

I wish TK good luck, will be interesting to watch how they tackle that problem.

AFAIK, TK has a small percentage of foreign pilots (5-10%) and started hiring foreign FA's also. Not familiar with the techinicians/engineers but I don't see a problem.
We are talking about a TK fleet of 200 planes today; going up to 230 planes in 5 years in a country of 75 million people. I am sure TK can find enough technicians/engineers from around 80,000 graduates a year with engineering degrees plus 2 Grad programs with Aerospace Engineering.

TK has its own flight academy since 2007 and sends pilot candidates to Florida for training since 2010. Total pilot candidates from these two ventures around= 200 a year. Turkish pilot friends here can have more say on this matter.

That is why LH has so many flights to Turkey also; serving the same ethnic traffic and taking the same transit pax as bonus. (plus LH/TK joint venture, Sunekspress). LH like BA, KL, AF, LX, AZ, IB enjoyed this transit pax for many years. Now Turks can fly to almost anywhere in the world with TK, nothing wrong with that.

I think the bigger issues with this expansion still are; the capacity at IST, the inconsistency of service on board the planes, ease of transfers, the standards at call centers/ground desks, website experience and crisis management training.
And big smiles all around and we have a great airline competing with the best in the world!
