Does anyone have any idea what happened to the paint on the tail of this Korean A380? Did they just run out of paint? Looks like a bit of an unprofessional paint job.

It seems to be a optical illusion from the glare of the sun. To me it seems to simply be the reflection from the horizontal stabilizer. The lighter color is just being reflected on the vertical stabilizer. If you look at the other A-380 in the background you can see a smaller "dot" on the tail also.

Now you mention it I can see what you mean, still, does look like it has been half painted haha.

Reflection from the horizontal stab - nothing more.

This is the next to latest picture of this airframe from LAX on 2 December 2012, and it clearly shows the tail is painted, so a reflection is indeed the most logical explanation for the bright spot.

Although it could be a reflection, it does look like primer. The bottom left edge looks too straight, cut-off to be a reflection. However, if you check A.net photos of Korean Air HL 7614 no white paint is shown. It looks like someone took a paint roller dipped in white paint to the tail. IMO.

Excellent snapshot.

What is the peak number of A380s in a row in the a.net database? Ideal in operation, but I'll take TLS too.

They could have had a repair in the past week, in that area, and due to management forcing the plane back into the air in the shortest time possible, didn't have time to finish the topcoat. It could be a reflection, anything is possible, but it looks to me like primer. My

That's what it is...just the horizontal stab throwing light on the rudders topcoat. Photographer at just the correct position to view this.

I don't think it was a reflection. The top edge is too jagged, the left edge is exactly at the leading edge of the rudder, and the right edge is parallel to the trailing edge of the rudder.

There's a fair lot of blue amongst that primer. That to me suggests it's a reflection rather than a repair.

Surprised this is being discussed really... Open it in large view and to me that is quite clearly a reflection!

Kinda symbolic with the 747 going the other direction in the background... The new A380 replacing the retiring old 747... Like a substitution... Or maybe thats just the old English student in me, making something out of nothing!

Don't rudders have to be very finely balanced to fly efficiently?

It's not efficiency, but rather flutter avoidance that requires careful adherence to the balance limits of a rudder.

Weighing in with you as a pro in the photo industry for the past 28 years - from technicial to shooting to final image production (and also as a aircraft maintenance specialist for 12 years prior) - it is in all probability ascribable to reflection. The unevenness of the patch is all due to both the reflecting and reflected-upon surfaces which are far from being flat in the first place. Reflected lights from and on curvy surfaces can and do play tricks on the eyes.

I have been commissioned to photograph over 2,000 aircraft in the last 25 years...I can assure you it is just highlights on a fresh topcoat of paint. Blue paint...(I also paint aircraft). The irregularity is from the internal structure of the rudder and H/stab, and the "oil canning" of the composite skin. Can't believe this is even debatable as an issue at least for those that chase planes with a camera?!

If it is not a reflection, the second ship has the same problem. Just a little smaller.

Of course it's a reflection, and that's coming from someone who has never taken a professional photo in his life... so there

Clearly in your picture the unpainted spot has been moved to just above the aft lower door. And now it flows over the horizontal tail in the slipstream!! What kind of paint are they using at Korean Air!! Unbelievable.

the blue that KAL uses is quite interesting

There is a reflection on the A380 in the middle and on the 747 (what a beauty) just entering the picture as well.

No doubt about it being a reflection.

Hi

That is reflection from horizontal tail and not unpainted area or spot. If you want I can share sequence photos before and after reflection.
KE has their own painting plant at PUS and they can do various paint job including special livery, wrapping and even other airlines livery.
So I can't think they made such a big paint error!

True for the 747-400s, that's for sure. However, I think the incoming 747-8s will end up being the newest sub-fleet at KAL.
