Hi,

Following LOTs European Dream Tour with its first 2 of 8 B787s, they will today commence longhaul transatlantic operations with the aircraft. SP-LRA and SP-LRB were delivered in November and December respectively. LO3 is due to leave Warsaw for Chicago in the next few minutes.

I feel this represents confidence in the 787 fresh off the back of today's issues and signifies that the CAO and EASA are happy with the aircraft. It is also a landmark day for LOT and for Polish aviation.

Kind Regards
ThomasCook

SP-LRB was scheduled to operate the inaugural flight to Chicago. I hope O'Hare spotters catch it!

Must be a really good feeling for some folks on board that flight with the fleet grounding in Japan.
I guess LOT isnt too happy at the moment, with the bad PR the plane is receiving at the moment.

Hopefully someone in able to get some pictures. I know LO had a few hiccups with their 787s when they first arrived, but hopefully they're able to avoid some of the more serious problems that the Japanese airlines have been having. Anyone know when the third one is supposed to be delivered from PAE?

Well, this must be a little awkward. The first flight is about to arrive at ORD and only a few hours ago the FAA ordered all 787s be grounded until the battery issue is resolved. Though is LO going to be exempt from this order since they are not a US airline?

"Boeing 787 Dreamliners flying into Chicago -- by United Airlines and LOT Polish Airlines -- continued to operate Wednesday, even after two Japanese carriers grounded their 787 fleets Wednesday after a rash of electrical problems and fuel leaks and amid a Federal Aviation Administration investigation.

United inspected its 787 fleet of six planes overnight on Wednesday, a United spokeswoman said. "They are flying as scheduled," she said. "We are continuing to support Boeing and the FAA throughout their review."

LOT Polish Airlines scheduled its inaugural flight from Warsaw, Poland, to Chicago O'Hare for Wednesday and will maintain that schedule. "We've decided to continue operations. Today the Dreamliner will go to Chicago," a spokesman told Polish TV.

The LOT flight is scheduled to land at O'Hare at 6:55 p.m. Wednesday.

While the United flights are temporary, scheduled to end in late March, LOT will fly the first regular 787 flight out of Chicago."

LOT can certainly fly the a/c empty (ferry it) back to WAW. I'm not certain if they would be prohibited from flying paying passengers back. I haven't even seen the order itself published. I'd think they could fly the passengers back tonight.

It's all awkward. Hopefully it gets sorted fast.

Just make a check payable to "The United States Treasury" and things will be just fine.

Looks like it is going to arrive just in time to be grounded - if the FAA has grounded the Dreamliner, because they consider it unsafe, how will passengers feel about travelling across the atlantic in this thing and how long will it be until the JAA grounds it as well? Probably just a question of hours until the JAA follows the example of the FAA...

The grounding only affects UA as the order applies to US airlines only and they're the only US airline that flies the 787. More than likely the Polish Civil Aviation Office will follow the lead of the FAA and ground LOT's 787s until the FAA lifts the grounding of the type in the US.

Yes, it will remain on M12 and be moved over to a Hardstand tomorrow morning. (That is unless LO wants it moved there tonight)

I have some pictures of it arriving but they're on my iphone.

What a bummer, the timing of FAA could not have been worse for LOT. I hope they did not plan a huge bash for departing passangers. Are they sending the old 767 to get them?

Apparently most passengers were rebooked on other airlines:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/busine...-grounded-20130116,0,2351415.story

"Foreign carriers are not affected by the FAA order, but LOT Polish Airlines canceled its inaugural flight celebration at O'Hare Wednesday night, even before the flight landed from Warsaw.

“We just think it would be inappropriate to go ahead with the activities,” said Frank Joost, regional sales director of the Americas for LOT. He described the FAA grounding of 787 flights as a “surprise.”

LOT passengers hoping to depart to Warsaw on a 9:55 p.m. Dreamliner flight Wednesday said they were disappointed the flight was cancelled. Many were rebooked on Lufthansa through Munich."

Are they actually just going to leave it at ORD for the time being or will it fly back empty?

Please continue all the discussions about 787 grounding in the FAA grounds 787 thread:

FAA Grounds 787 (by brons2 Jan 16 2013 in Civil Aviation)

So we can all discuss this matter in one thread and not 5 different ones.

Thanks.
