What time is it starting? Press release says 9am CST but another link I clicked says just 48 minutes remaining? Did they really mean 9am EST?

It may not be good for me and my career to post this pic ahead of the unveiling. I will however describe what I see. The tail has red white and blue. The leading edge of the tail has wide blue stripes while the back part of the tail has smaller red stripes. All the stripes are going horizontally. It will be interesting to the entire aircraft!

After all the waiting, anticipation, guessing, and almost 1000 (?) posts here on A.net, this livery better be good.

If there are two aircraft already painted in the new livery, AA sure did a good job in keeping it under wraps!

Can't wait.

I have not seen the logo and as far as I can see, there is no logo on the tail.

I think there may have been a glitch when I click an internal link and the tail appeared. I took a screen shot of it but I just don't feel it wise for me to post that pic here!

Well they still have a very stylized eagle head with the white part (and gap between that and the blue), although it kind of reminds me of the USPS logo (without actually taking a close look at that logo). I really like it as well though.

The white looks like either a bent winglet or a pull tab of some sort. If the logo posted is for an aircraft heading to the right, the white portion appears to be bending against the wind, not with it. if you drop a line through the middle, don;t you mostly get the UA stars and bars stripe on the tail??

More of its head than just the beak. The more I look at it the more I like it. In addition to just a stylized eagle head profile it kind of looks like an eagle with its head turned back (with the red being the body and the different red shades helping to give it definition).

I mean, that's horrible. Every other rebrand from a US carrier, and even WN, has been hugely better than this one.. I just can't stand that TAIL! IMO, they should have put a huge eagle on it and let the talons come down on the fuselage. But that it about as bad as seeing tourist in other countries wearing the US flag as pajamas or boxers or something.. just wrong and disrespectful and autrocious!

Well, looks like that is the new livery, and wow - that is pretty bad. I agree with others that tail looks pretty awful. I actually really like the new logo, but that livery leaves much to be desired, unfortunately. If they had just put a little more effort into making that tail not look so cheap and basic, I think that would have gone a long way. Oh well ...

It is definitely a big change, but I'll get used to it. Its classy, modern, and VERY American. The 77W will look gorgeous on this livery. We'll get used to it. It is definitely better than any of the other US carriers.

Lol face it, none of you were going to like it no matter what it looked like.

I personally love it. For whoever said it's rediculous to have the US flag on the tail, there a several airlines that do this... what makes the US any different.

I think it'll look great on the airplanes.

Nice going, AA. Two very large thumbs down. The livery was about the only thing that didn't need changing. This will be a case study of 'what not to do' in marketing classes for years to come.

Ugly, the logo looks like directly printed from Word. The grey looks a bit Spirit-like (new livery). The tail is not that bad in my opinion though.

Overall, I like the rendering better than the pictures. I think if the red/white stripes continued all the way down to the bottom of the fuselage it would suddenly look a lot better.

However, anyone who expected anything less than billboard titles and an obviously "American" tail was disillusioned and greedy. This is how airlines have been branded for the last decade or so (Finnair, Emirates, Virgin, Air France, Lufthansa, TAM, even Swiss!)

I don't really get the point of the grey base (aside from trying too hard to pick up on the whole 'retro' thing). It doesn't do anything to improve the livery overall and just melts to whole plane into the background.

Tail is too busy.

As a matter fo fact, two words: Extremeley horrible.

If they cannot keep the silver polish for whatever reason, they should have taken a more radical approach instead of painting 90% of the plan in a grey that tries to imitate the silver but is just boring, depressing and uninspried.

I was excited when the logo came out...then disappointed with the tail when I saw the livery here. The tail looks too busy and doesn't do the logo (or AA) justice. Sort of gives off a Cheapo Air feel.

"Reflecting the soaring spirit that is uniquely American, our new logo — the Flight Symbol — contains the eagle, the star, the "A," and refreshed shades of red, white and blue. Together, they represent a clean and modern update to the core icons of our company. "

The logo on the tail would have looked great. Or a few stars on the tail, but this thing is just horrible.

A pity because the logo itself is really good.

Very true. I covered my eyes as I scrolled down the page earlier. Personally I like the anticipation of watching the video.

IMHO I like the logo, I'm sad to see the current logo go. But I don't like the livery itself.

Personally I don't know if that were deter me from buying an American Airlines flight (after all that's what AA management want. There not in business just to keep a.nutters amused) especially considering there new products......not that I could afford anything other than Economy.

But we'll just have to see. If its unpopular with passengers (not just us) and effectively devalues the brand then AA management will just back paddle

I'm with the "fail" crowd here.
They could have done some kind of stylised eagle head in a deep navy blue and ran the blue and read down the body some now with a silver top. Keep the font they picked etc. To me, this looks like something somebody would paint a freight train up looking like.

Not very excited, but I do like it. Looks fresh. But while looking good on the 777 rendering, the real gray is dull on the 737 what makes it less attractive. The fuselage sadly is so empty like almost anywhere else recently. I give it 7,5 out of 10.

I like it, I think it's nice. As expected, it puts a modern face on the airline and a rebranding is essential as the airline comes out of bankruptcy, introduces new aircraft, and has a new product.

Much better, for example, than the "new" United livery, which is awful and does nothing to create any excitement for the brand.

Perhaps it's not the design I would have picked but I don't think it's bad. But I like it if only for the fact they had the guts to almost completely break from their previous designs rather then a "modernization" of an old logo, something their domestic competition seems happy to keep doing. Maybe it's just me but it feels like for the past two decades or longer Delta has had a delta , United had a "U" (you can call it a tulip if makes you feel better) , and Continental had a circle/globe.

Obviously, everything on the website is running terribly slowly, so there really isn't a lot to be seen yet. I would note that based on the picture of the 738, I'm not a big fan (yet). Interestingly, though, in the computer generated images that AA has on their home page of the 773, the fuselage appears much crisper in it's coloration and doesn't look too terrible. Upon seeing the "icon" more thoroughly as well, it's more likely to grow on me. Unfortunately, as of right now, I'm a bit underwhelmed.

OK here's a question I got from watching the videos ... is it possible that we could have a combination of looks in the fleet with some planes fully painted in the new livery while others remain polished metal with the new livery?

This would be the most economical and quickest way to make the change across the entire fleet.

Let me be as neutral as I can and share my opinion as a former concept designer in my early years... The logo looks pretty good and does the job of keeping the identity of AA, but making it more modern and sleeker. The typography is OK, if it was me I would make it a tad tighter, meaning that the letters should be a little closer to each other.
Now the livery, oh boy, I personally don't like it at all, but it also doesn't do the new logo any justice and doesn't affiliate with the logo very well... I somehow have the feeling, that they put 90% of time, effort and budget in the concept of the new logo and rushed through with the livery design. While the livery looks better on the 77W, it looks completely misplaced on the 738...
Its somehow a little sad, because the logo gives so much potential for a very nice and sleek livery, its disappointing that they came up with this...

That is really awful. AA's livery, although dated, was classic and attractive. I don't understand who thought this looked good - at all. It looks unfinished, and the tail is not nice.

I am not a fan of the tail....I think they could have done something a lot better with that. The Font looks pretty sharp though.

Quoting plateman (Reply 126):
Predicted it before that the majority, if not all, on here would hate it no matter what it looked like since you hate everything new livery ever posted. Wish I were a betting man.

Im not sure that everyone hates most if not all new livery's lately. Just most of them havent been that good. In this case here, the old colours of American were classic, and the new colours dont really seem to work. I for one am going to miss the Eagle on the tail.

Quoting richiemo (Reply 145):

The renderings all make it look very silver... Do we have any live photos of the 77W? I imagine it'll be rather a lot darker in real life.

On the newamerican website go down to the flipping photos (the first slide is the logo) and underneath there are 5 boxes/labels -- select the furthest on the right ("what's next") then go to the second photo. It's not the whole plane, just the titles...

Here's images of the new branding on loyalty cards, luggage tags, menus, etc ...

http://blog.racingwinds.com/2013/01/17/aa-liveblog/

I think AA really did a good job on the logo. On all the individual components of the branding, the logo looks modern, clean, and really pretty classy if you ask me.

I would have liked to see the logo on the tail, leaving the fuselage with just the "American" title. I suspect the flag will grow on me, but it's a bit jarring to see the giant American flag graphic on a livery that was previously so clean.

The tail really is unfortunate - that's definitely going to take some getting used to.

And it's made all the more unfortunate given that now, after scanning through all the other images of different style elements and branding features on airport signage, premium service items, etc., I must say that they really did an exceptional job on the new logo itself - it looks great, and it particularly looks great both in color and just the silver-grayscale, and in multiple different venues. I really, really like it.

All in all, of everything I've seen today, that tail really is the only thing I don't like.

A tail that's done up as a stylized U.S. flag? On the nominal U.S. flag carrier (i.e. AMERICAN Airlines)? Go figure ...

I like it. It's instant, solid recognition right along with the big billboard (which works very nicely on the shiny chrome) and logo. A good start for them.

Good luck to the new AA!

I don't see where the actual small US flag is painted or decaled on.

I like the fuselage but not crazy about the tail; I agree with above comments...it looks like an AA/US merger by the tail. I also agree that when you first saw the new Delta tail design, you knew that that DL/NW was close in hand.

Cannot imagine how difficult an undertaking this re-brand had to be given history, expectations and timing. Obviously, all opinions are personal, but I feel like the team responsible hit 98% of it out of the park.

The logo, the re-brand for all collateral, signage, fonts etc. is beautiful. It's just that tail, it looks like a fish out of water. My hope is that I feel that way only because it is a radical change and that it will grow on me.

The only other nit I have to pick is with the billboard American title. From the 737 pictures in the post, I get the sense that the lettering is not wide or bold enough and that the windows obscure it somewhat. Particularly in the picture of the approach at DFW, it looks like the windows keep American from being read clearly.

Again, all thoughts are just personal. I love the brand and all associated with it, but do think the livery could stand to be cleaned up a bit with the tail perhaps softened and the billboard made bolder.

I was excited when the logo came out...then disappointed with the tail when I saw the livery here. The tail looks too busy and doesn't do the logo (or AA) justice. Sort of gives off a Cheapo Air feel.

I agree...seems to be the thoughts of the majority. If they had just incorporated the logo into the tail, it could have been a great livery, IMO. Maybe it will grow on me, but disappointed at the moment. Something tells me this one won't last 15 years.

I know I'm (almost) alone on this one but I think IT LOOKS GREAT. It's fresh and bold. Unabashedly American. And I love the evolution of the eagle that looks like a turning page. I've never flown American but as an advertising creative director, I have to say, hats off to the design team.

Honestly, the tail is growing on me fast...and I do find it very retro (has sort of a streamline thing going for it).

But, the grey color is AWFUL! They should have at the very least used a NW/Aeroflot style reflective paint instead of that drab military grey.

First, there is nothing on the winglets. You would think they would put the logo on the winglet.

Second, while I like the new logo, from a distance, it looks a more like a stylized homage to the Texas Lone Star flag than a stylized eagle with red and blue wings.

Third, the tail is awful. It looks too much like the tail of George Bush's campaign plane in 2000. I'm sure someone got the idea from the stylized Union Jack that is part of BA's livery. Frankly, the logo would work better on the tail.

Fourth, are there any renderings of the new livery on the MD-80, 757, 767, and 787? And, how will this look on the Embrears and Canadairs?

I said this would create ripples in the force

When I first clapped eyes on it, I thought I was being sent something from modifiedairliners.
The image I have doesn't have the logo on it and the titles are further forward. Obviously they decided they wanted to show off the new logo.

Now that I've seen the final thing. I have an idea. Will post it later.

I thought of a simple fix for the tail, continue the blue stripes all the way across the top half, and then extend the red and white strips all the way down and around the aircraft in line with the tail (the same way the red wraps around qantas body below the tail)

I like it a lot and my partner (who doesn't really care about airlines or planes) thinks its great too.

FWIW.

I think silver would have been better than grey, but I do think it's way better than the previous old /tired livery. Hopefully they'll be able to paint the planes expeditiously and it won't take 5+ years like other airlines who won't be named.

From what I've seen on here, the new design on the tail looks like something out of an airline distaster movie. The title should say "TransGlobal Airways" or something like that.
