Well for me the livery isnt as spectacular as we all probably thought it would be, though I think its a grower. Maybe when we get better pics or pics on the 77W it will probably look a bit better. Just my opinion. Though im kinda surprised at the amount of Americans who hate the tail...

A few grainy, horrible looking ones of a 738. These renderings are much better than those pictures.

The logo is pretty good. I like it. The livery isn't as bad as I was expecting. At least it's different and sets it apart. We knew that nothing would truly replace that classic livery.

Quoting PA727 (Reply 252):
Cannot imagine how difficult an undertaking this re-brand had to be given history, expectations and timing. Obviously, all opinions are personal, but I feel like the team responsible hit 98% of it out of the park.

The logo, the re-brand for all collateral, signage, fonts etc. is beautiful. It's just that tail, it looks like a fish out of water. My hope is that I feel that way only because it is a radical change and that it will grow on me.

>>>

The more I think about it and let the images roll over in my mind, the more I agree with you guys. The expectations here were immense, and the task basically impossible - there was no way they could come up with anything that wasn't going to disappoint a lot of people. When you're contemplating replacing the oldest brand in the industry, and one of the most iconic brands anywhere, you're bound to upset people. But, all in all, they really did do a great job for the most part - I was honestly expecting much worse.

I agree. There have been several pics of the 737 featuring the new livery, but nothing high-quality (all grainy cell phone pics). I really like the logo. I'll reserve judgement on the livery until I see clear photos.

Hopefully the tail will grow on (most of) us. I'm a little unsure. I imagine alot of opinions will continue to change as we see the tail show up on various aircraft types.

I do like the logo and branding and the billboard titles. Although, the more I look at this pic of the 738, eagle logo looks like stylish Texas state flag.

Thought the video introducing the new look was pretty cool though.

The tail hurts my eyes. It looks like somebody grabbed a piano keyboard, placed it upside down and painted one key blue, one red, leave some white in the middle, and then all over. It´s not soothing to look at.

yes the 737 that was posted on the other thread...

I like the idea of the flag on the tail, stylized...like BA and EK- not like that...(it probably would have looked beter if they had stars on the tail in the blue section). The paint is to dark, and is in not reflective like portrayed in the video (i saw the 77W at DFW before any of the tirles were put on) and really the tail seams a bit heavy and abrupt.

Whether the new image is good or not, I do have to say one thing. They hit it out of the park with the unveling and their "newamerican" website. This is you how you unveil a new corporate image. The "new" United should take notes.

The livery would be 500% better if the grey paint was as reflective as it is in those renderings. Tail has a nice retro streamline look, but the grey ruins the whole thing IMO.

I wasnt expecting miracles, or marvels of design. I was expecting a new corporate identity for AA, and I got one. A rather cool one cuz its fresh and daring. Do I love it? No, but I certainly dont hate it and I am sure than when the time comes to change this one, the same people will bitch, whine and complain.

Big disappointment. I'm all for making Cubans feel welcome and at home, but this is taking it too far. I wouldn't think Cubana influenced the design had it not been for the white stripes in the blue section of the tail.

Am I the only person who also thinks it resembles N605JB (B6 Red Sox a320)??

Overall I think this is a step waaay backward for AA, but, as did the new Ford Fusion and the taste of wasabi, it'll probably grow on me.

First, I must say I love the branding/logo. I will say I am gonna miss having the scissor cut eagle design and the AA on the tail but this is much more modern a classy. The livery is growing on me. At first I hated it but I am starting to think that it actually looks pretty good. I am sure that I am not the only one who had that initial shock.

It also looks like the American Eagle branding is identical (as opposed to a whole different livery as before). Makes the brand more streamlined across the board.

Now, the one thing like that makes the tail alright to me but no one else is the blue section. The lines remind me of the USAir livery of the late 80's/early 90's which I liked.

Overall, change is inevitable and I can say that it could have been a whole lot worse!

Alright... Not a big fan of it. Would love to see the Eagle. As for the titles... The colors used in "American" are too dark. I think it should be in red, as it will be near impossible to advertise your airline in darker conditions.. It has become so difficult to decipher from a distance what airline is flying overhead. I am sure the paint job will grow on me.

I positively hate this new livery. Yeah, it's "modern" and like so many "modern" things these days it looks cheap and hideous. They paid somebody millions to design this dreck. They must be laughing all the way to the bank.

From a classic timeless livery to this. Well, since American is my airline I better get used to it.

Looking at the behind the scenes video, it looks like there is a 757 out there also painted in the new scheme. They also used a MD-80 to test silver paint samples. This plane might have already been taken out of service or there could be a MD-80 painted as well.

How will this look on the MD-80s? Considering that AA has the last MD-80s, which were built for TWA. Is AA planning to repaint all of its ground vehicles? It appears that the blue used on the aircraft is lighter than the blue that was used on the old livery and ground vehicles.

Are pilots, F/As, mechanics, and CSAs getting new uniforms? What happens to the crest on pilot hats? The current crest is based on logos AA used prior to the 1968 rebranding.

That said, it will be interesting to see how long this livery lasts. When BA introduced the world tails, everyone seemed to like every aspect of the livery, except for the tail. That led to the current livery, which is the prior livery with the stylized Union Jack on the tail. When DL replaced its iconic livery in 1997, that didn't last all that long, because it was kind of bland. I think wavy gravy came along in late 2000 or early 2001.

You can't just compare it to UAL and DAL.

AA is suppose to be a global company, and after all is that not where the profit is for US carriers?

So we should be comparing it to the likes of LAN, Qatar Airways, Aeroflot, Swiss International, Finnair,
BA and Alitalia.

I'd go with United of these three. The AA one only will look decent when the sun hits it the right way, otherwise it'll look dull. Note how AA exaggerated the glint in the photoshopped preview images they published. AA's got it all wrong running the titles through the windows and the cartoonish tail. The UA tail is its weakest point, but overall I prefer the UA livery.

I like the livery overall and love the logo and branding.

I agree with some others who posted that continuing down with one more red line that extends into a curved cheat line (aka similar to UA's 787s) that tapers towards the front would have really made the body of the plane something a little more special.

I don't like the tail at all. It just looks tacky. Hopefully it's just temporary and a new livery is devised after merger with US.

I think they should have taken the new logo and placed it on the tail instead of stripes. Would have had a cleaner simpler look.

I can't really make much judgment until I've seen it on real planes for a while. My initial take is that I really like everything about the rebranding, but can't wrap my mind around the tail yet. I might've preferred something besides the flag, but I'm sure this will be fine too.

I never have been a huge fan of the current UA livery, it has not grown on me. I didn't love the new DL livery when it first came out, but I'm pretty fond of it now. But they both get the job done. Time will tell how I feel about the AA tail, but frankly, it too will do the job just fine whether I personally like it or not.

My thoughts

- Flag should have came all the way down the fuselage
- A A & eagle wings should have been incorporated into the logo/livery, would have been a great way to link the past to the future

And in the grand scheme of things it's a trivial amount of money. It'll be interesting to see how AA implements the new livery - whether they proactively paint aircraft before they need it or do it during the course of a heavy check. Hopefully, it's the former, instead of the latter - UA still had aircraft in the battleship scheme when they merged with CO and that was a full 5+ years after they had introduced the white and blue tulip. Alternatively, DL did it right after merging with NW and introducing the new livery.

I like the new AA livery, although to me, the logo near L1/R1 seems slightly out of place, but overall, I think it's a win.

I love the new logo, and when I first saw the tail, I had mixed feelings, being an AA employee. But when you take a good look at the tail, there's a lot more going on- there are nuances of blue in the blue stripes, and pale grey in the white stripes. Although I liked the old livery, it was time to change. I think this will be a winner. We kept hearing rumors- there would be no more red, white and blue, it was going to be cream colored and grey was just temporary, the new font was going to be all lower-case letters, etc, etc.

I'm not opposed to change. I loved the last TWA paint, for instance, even though it was radically different. Something along those lines is what I was expecting when they said "retro". This nonsense is embarrassing.

I like this a lot. To me it's modern, "cool" with the greys yet bold with the tail, I think it stands out quite nicely and is quite visible and recognizable (which is great for brand recognition), the new logo is quite smart. The only thing that pisses me off is nothing was done to the winglets on the pictures that I have seen so far. I really wish airlines would be more with their winglets as quite a few leave them grey or white. Even if it is just solid red or blue, or has the new logo on it, I think that would be great.

Otherwise, I really think this is a great re-brand (visually). I wish AA best of luck on this new endeavor!!!

Its clean and its fresh, but it is more befitting that of a new carrier or an lcc, not that of a carrier with a long and distinguished history.

I'm not a huge fan of the new AA livery. When I look at, I just look at it for a second then look away. If I was running AA I would want a livery that people wouldn't stop looking at. However it wouldn't take much to make look eye catching. The bottom red stripe on the tail, I would run that forward. I don't know if I would take that red stripe to the nose, I may do a blend to have it start right after the American titles then running back towards the tail. I would paint the titles in blue rather than grey. I would run a 2" pinstripe below the red stripe going forward from the tail. Someone more talented than me could try and post one on here.

I like it. It is striking. It is distinctive. It is bold. The tail is spectacular whether your like it or not.

They re-imagined their streamline moderne past by composing the tail out of a series of bars. If we had taken the bars on the first class seat and designed a tail out of them, this would be it. I remarked upon the bars in my opinion of the first class seat and thought they would do something with bars, just not on the tail, but in a revised cheat line. Well, in essence, the designer made the tail the cheat line.

My 2 cents worth;

The basic design (elongated tail, billboad fonts & logo placement), quite fresh and current. Nothing ground breaking but over all good. Thumbs up.
The font: Very modern and appealing Thumbs up
Colours: Red, White & blue.. perfect for an American carrier.. represents well the country's colours and with it the spirit of the nation. It also reflects their livery history. The grey looks a bit bland but I want to see it live before making judgment. I think it's appropriate though. thumbs up
The logo: Excellent! Love it! The stylized eagles comes right out at ya. Big thumbs up.
The tail: Just ok. Some views of it look pretty striking, others awkward. I don't mind the red bars but the blue part just seems poorly executed. It probably will grow on me because this will stand out amongst a sea of bland tails as it is definitely distinctive. It will be cool to see alongside BA, AF, AZ, SA and other airlines whose tails somehow reflect their own flags or national colours. Thumb neither up or down..
America Eagle livery: I've only seen one link shoing the front half.. looks great and the grey will probably make them stand out more actually.

So overall I guess I like it.

But, all in all, they really did do a great job for the most part - I was honestly expecting much worse.

It may grow on me, the 737 doesn't look horrible, but it is still a pretty cheap and tacky approach. It will look okay on the narrowbody jets, but it looks AWFUL on the 77W.

AA should have taken the Air France approach and made subtle tune-ups to the livery rather than start over from scratch.

Seriously, what a hack design. "Hey, we're called American, let's have a flag!" Any 5 year old would come up with that. And as for the logo, it looks like a ripped ribbon. Seriously! It's a line with a tear in it!

This would be so-so for an entry level charter operation, but for AAL--- just can't put into words how abysmal this is. Just complete fail.

If it weren't for the tail, I'd agree with you. As for the tail, personally, my favorite of the three is DL with UA a close second.

I like the rich color saturation of the DL tail. My main gripe with the new AA tail is the way the tail livery flows down over the fuselage and is in such stark contrast to the rest of the livery that it looks like someone started to repaint the aircraft and forgot to finish.

The two-tone of DL and UA plus the fact that the tail-art is limited to, well, the tail, seems to make them blend so much better, but that's just my opinion. I'm sure it'll grow on me with time, but for now....eh...

Of the amateur mock-ups over the last couple of months, I thought these to be the best:

At least in these designs, the tail art is blended well into the fuselage, which looks oh so much better.

Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike the US Airways livery, I was just looking at potential parallels. The very first thought I had when I saw the tail was "Wow, it sort of reminds me of the picture on the front of EBT cards." While I'll admit, I hated United livery at first and it sure has grown on me over the past few months, I am not so sure about this AA livery. While the fuselage looks great, the tail looks...cheap. It almost looks like something Spirit Air or some other Ultra Low Cost carrier would come up with, not a world class airline like AA. But lets hope it grows on us like other liveries have in the past!

Not as bad as I expected, and they finally, finally got rid of the ubiquitous Helvetica font (okay, substituted by something that looks a bit like the Myriad font that Apple uses in most marketing material).
The new logo obviously marks a huge departure from previous logos, with the eagle now in very stilised form. So a lot of people are going to take offense with this, but I like the fact they were quite bold with this.
The tail - yes, it does have some similarity with Cubana's tails, but I still kind of like it. After all, it is a variation of the American flag, so they're kind of limited in terms of choice of colours.
From the CG we've got so far, it also looks like AA are putting some additional shaded lines into the tail scheme, so I would expect it to be visually much more unique than it may appear in the CG.
They're also one of the few airlines that got the size of the titles on the fuselage right, and put the logo in front of it in the same size - compare with the small Air France titles and logo on the fuselage of their planes for contrast.

Crosscheck with my wife, who's not as nerdy as me about these things: "Very American - well, it is American Airlines, isn't it? I like it!"

I'm not a livery guy for the most part. I do think that the new AY and JL logos look like short-term lease jobs but I don't get fired up about them, nor do I find the "new" UA scheme bad.

Having said that, this new tail is the most garish, tacky, hideous thing I've ever seen. Maybe it shouldn't surprise me, as this is a country where we feel the need to wear our flag on bikinis and anything else that we can plaster it on. It just seemed that the new interior pictures were going for a vastly different feel than this markets. The new interiors had that understated elegance that the European and Asian carriers always seem to pull off, while the US carriers don't. I finally thought AA was going to pull it all together.

This I can only describe as WalMart-chic.

I can't believe some of you are saying you prefer the old livery. Yes it was around for a while and kind of iconic, but in today's market it looked, IMO,dated, cheap and tired.

I personally LOVE the new livery - contemporary, elegant and still as patriotic (if not more so than the old one).

AA have a stigma surrounding them, especially with Ch.11, and this re-brand brings them up-to-date and in line with more cutting edge competition IMO.

Why do people say "typical anet whiners" like they should be ashamed for making an obvious observation. All recent liveries have been a joke, Finnair basicly has a white plane with writing on it as does JAL. Iberia is ditching its logo for 2 blobs of paint that are shaped stupidly. LOT attempted to destroy its historic icon with writing LOT on the plane 2 times before backtracking. I don't recall one new livery that has been fresh and looked nice in recent times. The reason they all get mocked is because they are god awful.

This one is even more annoying for me because I think they got the logo correct, Its smart.. the branding on the tickets.. books etc looks fantastic. Then the finish it all up with a tail that looks like it was ripped from some 1990s corel clipart folder. Its embarrassing to look at.

So close yet so blah.

It dawned on me what the tail looks like, winglets on Virgin America aircraft. But speaking of winglets, why are the winglets simply painted in the gray used on the fuselage? Why not the logo or tail stripes? The old livery had the stripes and AA.Com.

UA has blue winglets with the gold stripe, like the cheat line on the fuselage. DL has blue winglets to match the tail. Even the winglets on AA's MD-11 had the stipes on the lower portion.

Overall, this isn't what I was expecting. I was expecting something that was a 21st Century version of the lightning bolt that was used on the fleet in the 1960s, before the 1968 rebranding.

North American tail? Even the Aeroflot tail is closer to the new AA tail IMHO. Also, the new AA font is quite far away from the font Air France uses. Just look at the width to height ratio of the A and then take it from there...
AA's new font is much, much closer (if not the same, I haven't done a more detailed inspection yet) to the Adobe Myriad font that Apple uses.

That would have looked supremely boring because it would have left most of the tail empty.
Also, because it would either have used the logo twice on each side of the plane (once on the fuselage, once on the tail), which would have looked silly, or it would have left the fuselage with just the dark grey "American" titles, with the only touch of colour being the logo on the tail.

Overall, I think I'm pretty happy with the bold design AA went with here - even before I start comparing it to other recent rebrands like 4U.

I think people are getting a little too caught up in this. AA's livery was always going to have to change with the way modern aircraft are being manufactured (i.e. composites), I liked the polished aluminum look, definitely a classic, but there's no getting around the fact that it needed to be changed.

That said, I think the new look is pretty good, not excellent or blowing me away...I don't think this was the absolute best they could have done, but I can already tell it's going to grow on me over time, especially once I see how this new brand is rolled out across other aspects of the business. The stylized American flag is pretty unique and bold and I'm glad to see they (somewhat) retained the eagle and didn't completely eliminate the color red from the brand.

IMHO, it appears there were two design teams, one for the fuselage and one for the tail and they didn't talk to each other. I am a big fan of getting away from the standard white fuselage but that didn't work here. I picture this in all white and the way the red, white and blue on the tail would have come together and I think it would have worked much better. I think the basic design of the flag on the tail looks a bit like someone in elementary school would have drawn.

In the Youtube video, it was mentioned how important it was to keep the eagle. I don't see it.

I'm not sure I understand why having the logo on the plane twice would look silly. A very large number of airlines have that exact arrangement. Off the top of my head, I know that all of AC, CX, DL, KE, KL, LH, and US do this. There surely are others.

Funny, because no one here did, "come up with that" that is...

As for the logo, it is the "A" reinvented as a bar. Instead of being side by side, they are stacked on top of each other at an angle. The Eagle remains at the inflection point, but now it is both Eagle and star.

This effectively combines in one place the three symbols that AA has always used in its brand --- the stars as in the Admirals Club logo, the bars as in AA's designation of classes (e.g., First and Business), and the letter "A."

No one who presented a new scheme on airliners.net or elsewhere came close to isolating the three symbols AA has always used to define themselves and uniting them creatively in a new logo.

Another way of looking at the livery...

In the old logo, the wings of the Eagle were striped, suggesting plumage. Graphically, of course, they were just a series of bars or stripes.

With that in mind, it seems that the designer of the new logo deconstructed the old logo (e.g., bars, wings, beak, and triangles) and rearranged the elements on the plane.

He put the two "A"'s (triangles) and the beak of the eagle (which now doubles as a star) in the front of the plane and he took the bars (wings) and expanded them into a larger pattern evocative of the US flag. Graphically, of course, it is just the same stripes that used to constitute the plumage of the eagle on the old logo.

Very interesting.

Come on guys!
This is one of the best new liveries for a major airline in a while. The 1968-livery may still have fans, but it was as outdated as it can get. I don't understand all the negative comments about the tail. It's distinctive and it's unmistakeable what the brand name says: American
I never liked this airline, but they're makig progress with me

Not as classy as the livery being replaced, but the new livery is a bold step and the stylized Eagle is great. I hope they can work an AA on there somewhere, but I am satisfied with this new livery.

Contemporary it may be, but that doesn't make it look good.

Forty years of history replaced by a generic meaningless swoosh thing.

I think we are seeing the beginning of another way to cut costs. Think about it United took the existing Continental paint job and simply removed "Continental" and put "United" in its place. Here we have only a fleeting reference to an airline identity for a new scheme. This afterthought is basic and removeable enough to be changed should it become necessary should a merger with USAirways take place. What I hope is that it provides a transition to something better. I hope I'm right.

So does something else. I didn't see this until now. But what everyone is calling the US flag pattern isn't primarily that at all. It is a blue and red "A" side by side.

I went back and looked at the photos of the new AA design below the AF design. In this context of graphic free interpretation, it could also be said that the AF tail is also double letter As next to each other, but we know they aren't.

Graphic representation should be stunningly clear, not confusing to the eye, or something we have to work out in our minds to its meaning. I still chuckle a bit when I look at the Thai Airways logo, for example, since to me it looks like the "That Girl" logo from the '60s turned 90° on its side.

I'm all for modern and new, and like the new logo, but the tail looks like they just tried too hard to be all things, but ended up with nothing that captures a thing at base level.

Egad.. I think it's simply awful.

AAL was on to something with the new logo, but then they wrecked it with the tail. The tail evokes a combination of Greyhound Bus Lines, a cheap Saab 340 tail, and ... Family Airlines. It looks like Mattel toy.

I should point out that my wife, who cares not for matters of air travel and avgeekism, loves it. *sigh*

I have to admit, the work of my good friend Tom Collins above in this thread was spectacular. A little splash of color, and they'd have had a winner.

Wow. I expected most of you to hate it, no matter what it was... But I wasn't expecting this much vitriol.

It's a more radical change than I'd have liked -- is this the first AA livery ever that doesn't have a version of the double A with eagle mark (or at least, a version that isn't so abstracted that most people can't see it without it being explained to them)? -- but I actually think both the livery and branding are aesthetically pleasing, distinctive, and well thought out.

Then again, everyone here seems to love the current US livery, which does nothing for me... So I guess my tastes are unusual.

And for what it's worth, I love the 1968 brand/livery, but it was time for the brand to evolve. I doubt this one will last as long... But only time will tell that.

People hated the 1968 livery, too, when it was new. (Then again, quite a few people here seem to hate it for the opposite reason -- then it was too radical, now it's dated.) I think people's opinions of this one will also mellow over time.

Logo? Brilliant. Most of the livery? Meh, boring, until you get to the tail. That's where the "Damn" comes in.

It looks like they hired a bunch of blind designers to draw what they thought an American flag looked like, snapped a photo of one with an iPhone, cropped it to fit, and sent to to Kinko's to get a decal made.

The logo is fine. A dark blue would have been better. The fuselage, would look nicer with a silver type of paint, like someone mentioned, similar to what NW had.

What are they going to do with the winglets? The logo would fit perfectly on there. Or are they going to cut corners and not do that?

The tail looks like it was designed in a begining needle point class where they were smoking pot and became distracted. Horrible. I thought IB's new scheme was bad. AA's is a disaster just fromt that nasty tail. Did they forget the US flag has stars on it?

Are there any AA employees @ headquarters who read these type of comments? I really think they need to amend, etc., that tail, add the logo to the winglets....

I think the biggest problem with this livery is that it will be outdated before they even finish painting the fleet. Most of the modern airline schemes feel like they fit in this era (there are certainly exceptions), but are refined enough or simple enough to still look relevant in 20 years. Even the UA scheme, while 'dated' is refined enough that it still works, and would even more with a slight refresh of the globe icon.

The more I look at the tail on that AA 737....it's just so, so, so busy. There is way too much going on. It's glitzy, it's 'fresh' but like anything that is trying too hard to be 'in the now' stylish, it will be out of style before it even hits the store shelves. I think if they toned it down a little, lose the gradients and the multi-toned stripes, maybe it would work.

Gee, thanks for painting everyone with your wide brush!

People actually DO like change. Positive change. If you go back to the speculation threads, hordes of folks were looking forward to a change to the 44-year-old design, even to the point of coming up with new livery examples of their own.

As far as Delta is concerned, I personally don't like the use of 'negative space', where you have to imagine what should be there, but isn't. That's simply personal taste in design. But even I have to admit that DL got it right in that you know that the tail has a widget on it. How many people will look at the new AA tail and see two letter As? Not very many, I would gather, which is one of the many reasons that makes the new design a dud on delivery.

The tail is what kills this livery.

If they take the eagle livery on the front of the fuselage and slap it on the tail...problem solved.

I suspect, however, the flag livery on the tail has to do more with an integration of the USAirways flag logo into American's new look...a preview of things to come?

I think I'd like it more if I weren't a little offended that they butchered the flag like that. There are no stars, which are the esscence and importance of the American flag, and they somehow thought it would look better with stripes in their place? Sorry but no. Just no.

Not knowing what to expect, I needed a minute to comprehend the new livery. In the end, I quite like it.

A few things:

The high-res 737 picture shows the visual line created by the top of the tail’s leading edge and the fore edges of the red and white strips does extend to the bottom of the fuselage (the grey under the flag and aft of the line is different from the fuselage’s grey) (as mentioned by L0VE2FLY, Reply 184). This separates the tail and aft fuselage from the rest of the fuselage, like QF’s red tail and aft fuselage does. As a result, the flag does not seem to cut into the fuselage and just randomly end, like I thought it did in the renderings.

Quoting FriendlySkies (Reply 69):
It looks like the tail stripes are layered...there's 2-3 strips within each stripe, some of which have a gradient? I'm not sure I like this, it comes off as very busy up close...
Quoting thrufru (Reply 180):
Those were my thoughts, too. Now that the high resolution photo of the 738 is posted, I'm a bit more keen on it. The gradations on the vertical stabilizer look a lot better than the solid blue and red stripes I'd imagined.

I too liked the flag a lot more when the high-res 737 picture helped me see the layers and gradients. They make the flag less “cheap”/bland and more of something interesting to look at. They also draw my eye to the flag’s blue color, which I like along with RedTailDTW. The layers and gradients also make the tail look 3-D and sort of like a stained glass window. Lastly, the different colored blue strips also remind me of the blue, two-tone, striped tails from UA’s “Battleship” livery.

Do all the colors and quadrilaterals on the tail remind anyone else of B6’s “mosaic” tail pattern a little?

PA727, Reply 252, Part I:
"The only other nit I have to pick is with the billboard American title. From the 737 pictures in the post, I get the sense that the lettering is not wide or bold enough and that the windows obscure it somewhat. Particularly in the picture of the approach at DFW, it looks like the windows keep American from being read clearly."

That is what I thought too! But B6 seems to be happy with their billboard titles. I think it will be easier to read once people become more familiar with the new livery and associate it with “American”. I bet someday you could paint a word that starts in “A”, ends in “n”, and has similar letters (like “Armenian”) and it would take awhile for anyone to notice!

To me, the tail design is an abomination and needs to be ditched and the eagle needs to be on the tail. It looks like the tail of a charter carrier or low cost airline, not one of the flagship airlines of the United States. The American flag motif on the tail is associated with US Airways and should remain so. Now someone with some Photoshop skills put the US Airways tail design on the new AA livery.....

In my opinion, the fact that the background colour is NOT eurowhite is a plus. This new livery does modernize the branding and creates a fresh new look for the airline. The tail scheme is much more "in your face" than the outgoing tail design. My overall verdict: 6.75/10

N.B.: I cannot help but notice that the curved white triangular shaped thing separating the blue and red fields in the logo resembles the dorsal fin of an Orca whale going up an escalator.

I am in what seems to be the majority of people that are going: "WTF" is going on with that overly busy tail.?!?

I like the cleaner look of the font, and it only took a minute to give a positive nod to the logo. I tend to agree that the font could be a bit darker.

But that tail... it just doesn't relate to the rest of the aircraft. Individually, I don't mind it, combined... but, I have two thoughts:

Maraget Thatchers reaction to BA's World Tails comes to mind:

http://tinyurl.com/anm84jt

What is even more amusing is where they actually might have got the inspiration for their tail! I tend to think it was from Fort Whoop-Up,
a fort that was built to stem the flow of Whiskey Trading between Montana and Southern Alberta in Canada... hmmm... (the fort was south of YQL)

http://tinyurl.com/a9xgpmy

Coincidence? Anyways, my thought is the use of the streamlined logo would have looked a lot better on the tail, perhaps with some gradiant to it. The tail as unveiled is just WAY too busy.

I guess we will all have to grin and bear it, and get used to it like we did Delta.... *sigh*

You're right it did...

Quoting steex (Reply 156):
I'm not sure I understand why having the logo on the plane twice would look silly. A very large number of airlines have that exact arrangement. Off the top of my head, I know that all of AC, CX, DL, KE, KL, LH, and US do this. There surely are others.

...and you're also right, so allow me to clarify that I was also taking the size of the logos on the tail and fuselage into account   The old UA logo was nowhere as prominent (and large) on the fuselage as you now find it in the new AA paintjob, and furthermore, the fuselage itself got more livery features than in AA's new livery.
LH also has a small (unicolour) version of their logo on the nose, as well as on the tail, but you generally wouldn't find a livery that uses the logo on the tail and fuselage in about the same size. Even on CX, the fuselage logo is a lot smaller than the tail logo.

IMHO, resizing the new American titles and logo on the fuselage and then putting the logo on the tail as well would give you a very bland-looking plane with only the two logos standing out from the grey/silver. Basically the equivalent of an uninspired Euro-white livery, except using grey/silver instead of white.
So I like that they dared to put some colour on the tail and didn't go for the OhSoFamiliar "Titles with small logo on forward fuselage, logo on tail, unicolor fuselage" approach, which when taken to extremes gives you liveries like this one
http://www.airliners.net/photo/SunEx...d=8ae1b7da0806f4b5a7fae71ea661f409
Nice to see they dared to be different, particularly given that they knew that any redesign - however necessary from a branding/image standpoint - would upset a lot of people.

I think we are seeing the beginning of another way to cut costs. Think about it United took the existing Continental paint job and simply removed "Continental" and put "United" in its place. Here we have only a fleeting reference to an airline identity for a new scheme. This afterthought is basic and removeable enough to be changed should it become necessary

AA went for something much bolder than UA did - it presumably cost a lot more, too, although that's not saying much, as UA probably spent all of $200 on getting advice on (thankfully) changing the font of the United titles that replaced the Continental titles.
I also don't see how the new logo and titles are any more or less removable than any other kind of title/logo design, irrespective of whether you find it aesthetically pleasing or not. Even if they had kept a more conservative/traditional variation of the A/A logo with the eagle between the two A's, that would have been very easy to replace with something new should the need arise.

As things stand with the new branding, I have very good reason to believe that very little indeed would change about the look of the planes and general CI should US and AA really merge.

I don't like it. The only thing that works for me is the size of "American" and the nearby insignia. Other than that, it just looks so boring and washed-out (trading smart and classic for muted and dull). While I really don't like the design of the tail, I could probably warm up to this look if they used darker reds and blues to make them "pop" out from the light gray. Even the color of "American" is too muted and boring. Sorry, AA; not a fan of this.

I find it interesting that they chose the logo to be the one that's on a right-facing airplane. I thought most carriers with mirror-image logos on their aircraft, used the on that's on the other side of the aircraft.

e.g. The UA tulip logo on tickets, menus, baggage carts, UA Center, etc, is the one shown on the side of the aircraft that's pointed to the left.

It's unfortunate that so many people on this board dislike the new livery; this thread is starting to wreak of geriatrics and the unimaginative. To me, this is by far and away the best livery of any U.S. carrier, and one of the more edgy, modern, and symbolic liveries in the sky. The Flying Symbol and large-format lettering are spot on, and the tail is definitely acceptable. It's also a livery that should require less maintenance from a visual perspective, considering the base color. With time I think the negative sentiment will dissipate (in correlation with the UA "tulip" sympathizer-types). Can't wait to see all the tails in a row one day.

It's a brand, not freakin' conceptualist modern art.

Funnily enough, I recently saw a design documentary that had - among others - an interview with Massimo Vignelli, the guy that designed AA's previous livery and Corporate Identity. He could go into great lengths explaining every element of the design - and he also pointed out what a bold step it was in the 60s to go with the simple, clean-cut lines of the livery and particularly the Helvetica font. Far from everybody liked it back in the day as it was seen by many as being too modern, too simple (and he would have liked to be more radical, not even using the eagle).
If you want to check the documentary out, it's called "Helvetica".
Aviation geeks be warned that the only other aviation reference in it, besides AA, is an interview with Paula Scher, who was involved in UA's pre-merger corporate identity design (although she doesn't talk about that in the documentary).

As for "conceptualist modern art" - if you talk to any designer worth their money you'll realise that branding is exactly that, but on a commercial scale.

I seem to recall that US developed the white livery, to replace the dark blue livery during one of its 2 trips in bankruptcy. It was then modified after the merger with HP.

Wasn't the current UA/last CO livery introduced after CO's last trip through bankruptcy, getting rid of the golden tail livery that was around during the Frank Lorenzo era?

And this is just the airline industry. I could go through a lot of branding that came about during or after bankruptcies of other companies outside the industry.

Hardly. I hate United's livery, but only because it's really Continental's livery with the name changed, and I don't think it's a good reflection of the merged airline. Otherwise, it's pretty good. Is it as good as Delta's? No, it's not, and Delta's isn't as good as some of the other carriers in the country (JetBlue, Frontier) and around the world (too many to name). It's cheap, that's what it is. It's completely disproportional to the logo at the front, which is understated and goes nicely with the dark blue titles. Then you've got this garish monstrous, out-of-proportion flag on the tail which just ruins the balance. Either have an understated livery or a bold one, but don't try and do both at the same time - it never works.

When I have had some free time today I have looked closely at the photos of the new livery. Quite honestly, I have tried to force myself to like it. I'm sorry, I just can't do it, no matter how hard I try. I think it looks hideous, awful, dreadful. As others have noted here, the logo conjures up the Greyhound bus line logo. It also reminds me of the United States Postal Service logo (the eagle head). Perhaps that and the stylized flag on the tail are by design; perhaps American is trying to remind us that the airline is one of the original airmail route carriers.

As for the tail, I consider myself as patriotic as the next American, but I cringe when companies try to appropriate national symbols for commercial purposes. Yes, the name of the airline is "American;" yes, the red, white, and blue motif is consistent with the name and branding of the airline. But, to me, when a company falls back on patriotic imagery it smacks of desperation. There is a whiff of insincerity and insecurity, as if the company knows that its product is inferior so it tries to cloak the company in patriotic symbols. The tail also looks cheap to me, something you might see on the side of a moving van.

Overall, the design might be appropriate for a nonscheduled airline running sports charters. In fact, in addition to reminding me of Greyhound, the U.S. Postal Service, and a moving company, the livery evokes athletic team uniforms, more likely worn by high school teams as opposed to major league sports. I keep thinking about a teenager wearing a Russel Athletic tracksuit (or worse yet, a middle-aged man).

Bottom line, I have tried to like it. I wanted to like it (I really did). I hate it.

In all honesty, if AA and US do merge, this livery will NOT be changed. AA has spent too much money on developing this to change it. Otherwise they would've waited until after the merger was finalized until they revealed it!

I'm a bit confused, since I thought it was Henry Dreyfuss who came up with the 1968 'A A' design which lasted almost 45 years. Did Vignelli work for Dreyfuss? And yes, they did want to get rid of the eagle.

Just double-checked - it was definitely Vignelli who was lead on the AA design introduced in 1968. He wasn't working for Dreyfuss Associates, though, but (according to Vignelli himself) introduced to AA as a client by Henry Dreyfuss, who had a long-established history of design work for AA.
You can probably find Vignelli's interview for the Helvetica documentary, in which he talks about his ideas for the the AA design, on youtube.

All I can say about the new livery is it's just a very sad "livery fail."

Side note, does A.net have any kind polling feature where we can cast votes for or against? I'd be interested to see the percentages for and against.

This is the problem. The US livery is elegant, understated, and gives more respect to the flag than the AA look. If it dies it will be a travesty.

I answered my previous question about why did they want to get rid of The Eagle by accessing the "Behind The Scenes" video on AA's new livery (KarelXWB, Rep 15 in the topic "Who Designed AA's Livery").

Nice video, nice words, but I still don't like the final visual product. I can't add anything better than PacNWJet (Rep 265) opinion. A true letdown....jack

It's completely disproportional to the logo at the front, which is understated and goes nicely with the dark blue titles.

As far as I can tell in the photos of the 737-800 posted earlier, as well as from the "making of" video on youtube, showing the different colour shades they tried for the titles, they are dark grey/gunmetal-coloured, not dark blue.

It will not grow on me. American in the 1968 scheme was the last airline in the US using a cheatline, now that is gone. You are trying to tell me that thing up front is supposed to be an eagle head????

This would have been much better

I actually am a fan of MOST of the new corporate identity. While I am surprised and maybe a little sad to see the iconic "Scissors" Eagle and the Helvetica font go, I do like the new logo and the new font.

The trouble, as others have pointed out, is the tail. But the overall concept of evoking the American flag is a good one. On careful consideration, I think I've found the problem:

The tail seems to be made of alternating bars of light and dark shades (much like the US tail; make of that what you will) with the red and blue flag then superimposed over them. These mean that there isn't just one shade of red and one shade of blue, but that each stripe seems to have three alternating shade gradients. This adds a gaudy and distracting "shimmer" effect to the tail, especially the blue parts. The same tail done with solid colors would look much more clean (and it would probably be cheaper to apply, too).

On a different note:

I am reminded of the threads on this very message board back in the late 1990's when DL unveiled their Ron Allen color scheme. One poster said that he had decided that he was going to like it, because like it or not, it was going to be around for a long time. Well, the other posters who disliked it got their wish while learning to be very careful about wishes, because the replacement came sooner than anyone thought and it was the hideous "Deltaflot" scheme that was (thankfully) also short-lived.

So, with that in mind, I am going to let this livery grow on me. It's going to be around for a long time.

Which makes the tail even more ill-advised, as if the titles were blue at least there'd be some tie-in with the rest of the plane.

Definitely love the fuselage. Logo is great, a bit reminiscent of the united late 60s-seventies logo, simple, clean, and keeps the eagles head. Not digging the tail. Too many hues of colors red and blue. Almost reminds me a all the nonsense that was going on in UALs 90s battleship livery. As much as I love the US flag, it's looks a little gaudy and "90s"on this rendition. I think they could have gone with something reminisent of the flag that was a little smaller and more contiguous with their logo

I know this may be the WRONG thing to say in a thread about American Airlines....

But, in my opinion, talk about a new livery done RIGHT: The updated 1990's TWA color scheme.

Now THAT was a livery done right. It introduced bold new colors to the aircraft, kept the well known "TWA" logo on the tail and also managed to bring back the past with the gold globe on the fuselage. Classic and updated at the same time.

That livery managed to keep a well known logo, update the color scheme and tie in the airline's rich history.

I think American should have looked at what TWA did.

I like it - anything different from the seemingly endless parade of Euro-white liveries that seem to roll out one after the other these days is refreshing IMHO. Taste is subjective of course and as is evidenced in this and the other thread opinions run the gamut from love to hate and everything in between.

It looks like the bastard child of Greyhound and Aeroflot.

[quote=swaluvfa,reply=111]I'm sorry, but at first glance of the new logo:

LOGO = 100% Brilliant. Greyhound or Not, it has the Eagle flying out at you with the Red and Blue used brilliant.

TAIL = 100% FAIL. Horrific.

COLORS = Grey = BORING. United did it, as did BA and it failed for both. In rainy weather you want to kill yourself it's so depressing. Nothing warm about it though it's fine for interiors.

OVERALL = 50%. Logo a hit, the rest a complete disappointment. I'm glad I don't work for AA anymore or I'd be ticked off! Never thought I'd say this but if USAir does merge in the tail needs to be rethought... only keep the Logo, it's the only thing that works and is somewhat distinctive, Greyhound reference and all.
