In the latest series of setbacks for Boeings 787 Qatar Airways has cancelled the 787 services to Perth originally slated to begin 1 Feb. It will use 77L instead.

Perhaps it's a simple as QR realizing the 787 simply isn't big enough. If I'm not mistaken, QR have seen healthy loads to PER.

Akbar Al Baker is not one for subtly. As such, I would have expected him to issue a formal press release (via bullhorn) about such a grounding.

I agree, I am surprised he didn't come out blazing like he normally does. At the same time, maybe this has nothing to do with the recent 787 events but I bet we'll find out sooner or later.

Given his ego, I think he wants his facts sorted before he comes out firing at Boeing. We are seeing that the airlines are taking different approaches to these incidents:

1. UA keep on flying baby;
2. LOT (see number one)
3. QR, JL and ANA grounded for now;
4. LAN, Ethiopian and AI (see number one).

What with JAL stating they grounded their fleet to conduct a few checks and intent to resume operations within a couple of days, I think CXfirst is probably on the right track. It would take a very serious technical problem to ground a fleet two weeks out, serious enough that we would be seeing headlines about United grounding its fleet immediately too.

Alternatively, Qatar may be concerned about the aircraft's reliability, what with the recent spate of problems, and may have changed its mind about sending it so far from base in case it goes AOG and needs spare parts not available locally. If I am not mistaken, the nearest Boeing parts warehouse to PER is in Singapore. If Qatar doesn't fully trust the plane to operate trouble-free, flying one to PER isn't the same as to LHR where Boeing has a warehouse down the road...

They have not.

Today's schedule (Thursday) called for three of the five 787s in the fleet to be in service. Two operated normally to/from DXB, KWI and ZRH, and the third is grounded in LHR.

Of the two 787s not scheduled to be operational, one has just landed in DOH for the first time and isn't ready to go in service yet, while the other is, I think, being used for maintenance familiarization.

Qatar has NOT grounded its 787 fleet. A7-BCK is grounded in LHR. The other four aircraft are doing exactly what they were scheduled to do today, which is operate passenger flights for two of them, and be worked on at base for the other two!

How much is the seat differential on the 787 compared to the 77L? Can't be that much.

I thought the difference was greater, but wrong on that front (however 77L is more premium heavy, and perhaps QR want that).

77L: 42J + 217Y
787: 22J + 232Y

However, I'd think that using the 77L allows a bit more flexibility to fly the 77W instead when needed. Crew that come in on 77L, could leave on 77W, etc.

Shame would have loved to try my first QR & 787 experience on this route, looks like EK wins my business when they start operating their A380 to PER.

Shaky start for Boeing's Dreamliner, I am sure the issues will be sorted out and will continue to become a sucess as predicted.

Purely speculation, but I wonder if QR prefers to keep the 787 on routes that are primarily over land until more information is available on the battery issues. Most routes from DOH to Europe, Asia, and Africa would have ample en route diversion points if an issue arose, whereas DOH-PER has points along the route that are nearly two hours from a diversion point.

Though you would presume a battery fire is still an unlikely occurrence, it's preferable to know you'll be able to land almost immediately rather than potentially having such an issue well over the Indian Ocean.

I think that definitely has something to do with it, when you think logically. Better to be safe than sorry with all these issues going on. Optimistic thinking, but who knows, maybe we might see QR introduce a morning PER-DOH flight with the 787 sometime soon.

It may merely be postponed until a later date. They may still very well be the first to fly the 787 in Australia. Granted, I was looking forward to seeing the 787 in PER on schedule but seeing the 777 here instead isn't exactly a "loss"

From an operational perspective, the 77L gives QR more premium seats to sell in what I assume is a high premium route (PER=O&G). The 77L does offer fewer Economy Class seats vs the 787, but that's ok because QR can target the higher-yielding Economy Class customer. I can actually see this equipment change as a coincidence to what is happening with the 787 grounding.
