"Executive vice-president for programmes Tom Williams says the company has authorisation to offer the retrofit but has been "trying to see if there's enough interest".

But he says that the airframer believes it will have "enough numbers" to launch the retrofit by around March or April, and that the first aircraft could be modified by the latter half of 2014.

The change would take around three weeks and customers would probably schedule the retrofit to coincide with a C-check to minimise downtime."

Elsewhere in the article:

"He says there is a "bit of a weight penalty" from the reinforced outer section. But analysis indicates that the retrofit would provide the same aerodynamic benefits and fuel-burn reduction - around 4% on long sectors - as achieved with new-build sharklet-equipped A320s."

Could be a nice little earner for Airbus.

Any bets on launch customers?

Given how much pmCO loved winglets, and the transition of the A320s to more Latin America flying, I'd say a UA order is almost a given.

Three weeks, huh? Ouch. How long was the 737 conversion time?

The downtime might mean that uptake might be slow. But I think that virtually every operator who plans to keep their aircraft longer than the payback time will purchase them.

Does anyone know what kind of improvement the current wingtip fences give over an unadorned wingtip?

Obviously I cannot elaborate too much as it is internal information, but yes, our winglet retrofit program is coming....and soon, very soon. The problem is that you have 2 different programs that will need to take place because Airbus will start delivering planes with "sharklets" in the second half of this year, but some planes made before them will have the re-worked wings on them already which makes a retrofit quite easy (able to be done in house). All the other aircraft however are going to require much more re-work so they will be down longer. So this year we should see not only new deliveries with the "sharklets" and some retrofit planes too. Stay tuned LOL.

That's a new-build, though, not a retrofit.

The new United has a lot of narrowbodies, with more coming every day. They can cycle a few through at a time.
