I'm currently editing a video shot at LAX in October 1991. I noticed a rarity, a Lufthansa Boeing 727-200 departing! Does anybody have an idea why that would have been here? Could it possibly have been a wet lease or something like that?

Thanks for any help!

Using powers of deduction, this is D-ABKT. The below photo says it was also spotted at JFK in the summer of 1990 as an executive charter for the sister of the Sultan of Brunei, so might be a good bet that it was at LAX for similar purposes the following summer:

AeroWesty, thank you so much! I would have never have figured that one out. You're the best!

Welcome! It got rather easy when I saw that this registration was the only 727 in LH's fleet to receive the new paint job. So it was just searching for other US airports where it might have been captured for an idea of why it was here.

My first thought was that it was on its way to the desert, using LAX as the US entry point for immigration, but then I saw a '92 photo of the plane landing at Faro, so it couldn't have been that.

Lufthansa B732's could be seen at YMX in the late 1980's doing pilot training.

This thread reminds of a time in the late 80s when I was startled to see another unusual visitor to LAX, a 727-200 of Denmark's Sterling Airways. it turned our it was not one of the carrier's long haul charters - under discussion in another thread ---, but the aircraft was doing tests for the Valsan 727 re-engine project as evidenced by the "Valsan" logo on the engines.
