Not much info here either. no info on type or airline. crew config would suggest 2 pilots and 4 cabin crew then possibly A320 sized aircraft which the local carrier operates or could be AN 72....desperate for more info anyone.

Hoping for the best at this time.....

ALA - Almaty has CAT III B operational runway (23R) but very high terrain on the southern side of the airport 16500ft+

It appears to be a CRJ 200 ER - as usual the media have it wrong.
This is the type normally used on this flight but the crew count sounds more like 737
RIP!

I have made some investigations according to the information I have found in media.

Media claims it was a flight from Kokshetau (KOV) to Almaty (ALA). There is a flight DV760 scheduled from KOV to ALA at 10:00 -> 11:50 local time. This flight is normally not flown by Boeing and there are no Boeing's visible landing in ALA coming from KOV or with callsign *760 at Flightradar24 today.

According to http://www.planespotters.net/Airline/SCAT-Air they are also flying with CRJ200.

At about 12:40 local time you could see aircraft circling around ALA and diverting to other airports.

My guess is that the aircraft involved was a CRJ200 and that the accident happened between 11:40 and 12:40 local time.

Al Jazeera English is claiming the crashed plane is a "SCAT Airways, Bonbardier aircraft."
They are also claiming 20 souls onboard.

It happened at 13.13 LT, flight departed one hour late due to fog in Almaty.

Actually it's really foggy here since yesterday.

I guess another CFIT when trying to approach in visibility below safe limits, at least in flightradar other flights indeed seemed to divert so I assume visibility was too below safe limits also when this crash happened?

According to Aviation Safety (ASN,) the msn of the crashed aircraft was 7413. That means the aircraft involved was a former Cimber Air machine, OY-RJA at delivery, and wore "Team Lufthansa" colors for a while before wearing the Cimber Air house livery until that carrier's demise in 2012.

RIP to those that perished in Almaty.

ASN says five crew, 16 pax. Why did they need five crew on a CRJ-200? Did they have one or two deadheading?

Sad news. Hopefully the victims didn't suffer and lessons can be learned and applied from this accident. I'll be very curious to find out the results of the investigation since I fly the same type of aircraft.

Possible. Maybe just repositioning. Could also be a check airman in the jumpseat observing, or a flight attendant trainer observing the flight attendant.

Really? Anyone reading this that's been around this site for several years just thought of clogs and one of the all time classic non-aviation threads (it's right up there with snowglobes for amusement).

RIP to crew and pax. It is sad to see an aircraft that I worked on less than a year ago crash.
Here is OY-RJA in "happier" times. Sitting in CPH awaiting engines in CPH august last year.

First of all I want to express my depest condolences to the casualties and their relatives.
It's always sad when there is a plane crash.
When I saw that the aircraft was the former OY-RJA, it made me even a little more sad.
I've had a lot of great experiances with that aircraft, when working for former Cimber Air down in BSL. It was used daily on the 3 trips in each direction, and I had many awesome cockpit flighs on her.

So RIP to the caualties and to OY-RJA.
