Kinda would be neat to see what's dumped there. One could only imagine the creapy crawlers living in those planes.
Wonder which 747 is abandoned in Kano? Wasn't the Hydro Air one that hit a 'pothole'? I think it was scrapped.

Breaking up the derelict aircraft is all very well but they will need to have the infrastructure in place to deal with the vast amount of scrap metal that will come as a result. Otherwise I can forsee instead of piles of whole planes sitting about the airfields, it'll just be piles of rusting scrap. And I can hardly imagine aircraft scrap metal from Nigeria's hot & muggy climate
commanding the sort of value on the international metal market that old aircraft metal from the dry US boneyards get.
Perhaps they should leave them and arrange a few aviation enthusiat tours around the country to go and see them !

They'll probably do what we do with used cardboard: Load it in a cargo container and ship it to China. Helps with your export statistics too!

What does typical happen here? Are there companies that specialize in this field? Does it usually pay for itself or is seen more of a airport cleanup/beautification project?

That may be the easiest solution to pursue. Did not know this but scrap metal is one of the top three exports from the US to China, so sure, it can help stats.

BBC have also picked up on this story.
The B747 can not be ZS-OOS. That was at Lagos, not Kano. Besides it was scrapped between 2007 and 2009.
Perhaps it is an old Kabo Air plane.
Based on the BBC report, and www.airfleets.net, I think that Bellview B737-200 F-GHXK and 5N-BFX and Space World Boeing B737-200 5N-BGA and 5N-BGB are for the chop.
I suspect that the Benin City BAC 111 will also go.

IMO, the aircraft in the BBC article looks like Nicon Airways Boeing B737 5N-BEY.
Looks like they are chopping that one already.

This article refers to at least 1 Air Nigeria aircraft at Lagos, (Boeing B737 Classic?) and a DC8 freighter.

The caption says that it was impounded in 2004.

No mention yet of the BAC111 graveyard at Benin City.
Other possibles at Lagos include Chrome Air BAC111 5N-UJC, Nigerian Airways Airbus A310 5N-AUF, Fresh Air Boeing B737 5N-BFQ and Allied Air Cargo Boeing B727F 5N-OTI.
However, it is not clear if scrapping has started yet, or if they are still talking about it.

The bbc article also referred to a Boeing B737-200 that had been impounded about 8 years ago.
No further details were provided, IMO this sounds like 5N-BFQ or 5N-BEE of ADC Airlines.

I have done a bit of digging about the Kabo B747's.
I can find no record of 5N-RRR, 5N-JJJ, 5N-PDP, 5N-PPP or 5N-OOO since 2001.
IMO, 1 or more of these are to be chopped.

Okada Air 1-11s that have previously been reported wfu at Benin included 5N-AXQ (December 97), 5N-AYS (April 05), 5N-AYT (April 05), 5N-EHI (January 05) and 5N-ORO (December 97). They may well b e amongst those in the photo. Another 1-11, 5N-OAL of Oriental Airlines, was reported wfu at LOS in May 96 and their 5N-ENO at Owerri in February 05..

5N-RRR was reported as being derelict and being used for spares at Kano on 16 December 05.
The last report I have seen on 5N-JJJ was on a Hadj flight at JED in January 01.
5N-OOO was also reported on a Hadj flight at JED. That was on 22 January 04, three months before it was also reported at ALG on 24 April.

If 5N-RRR was derelict in 2005, it seems unlikely that it is still there.

5N-SSZ is an ex-IRS Airlines Fokker 28-4000, c/n 11190, originally delivered to Linjeflyg in Sweden back in November 1982, so slightly older than I am 
. Hope I will not be scrapped soon ... Silly jokes aside, does anyone know if IRS still operates Fokker 28-4000 5N-NCZ alongside their five Fokker 100s?
