WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Non-daily operations create fractional weekly service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. If a flight operated 5 days out of 7, it would show 0.8 flights.

WHY ARE THERE WEIRD FREQUENCIES IN FAR AWAY MONTHS FOR LCCs?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. Their schedules may also end mid-month. If B6 loads their schedule until Jan15, all flights in Janaury will show half frequency because of the way the report is created.

WHY IS A WHOLE AIRLINE'S SCHEDULE SHOWN AS CHANGING FOR A FUTURE MONTH?
Similarly to the previous question, some airlines load their schedule from nothing inside the 9 month window of this report. When their schedule is extended it will show as new service because there was no previous schedule to compare to. In some instances I will show a more valid comparison against another period.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE PINNACLE
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THE FREQUENCY DOESN'T SHOW A CHANGE, E.G. 4>4
This happens as a result of rounding. There is a change in service that is large enough to be listed, but through rounding it does not appear.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

It appears that some of AA's increases at ORD are related to summer travel, such as the additional flights to SEA. Others appear to be trying to increase overall flying, which has been speculated under Horton's turnaround plan. The only curious thing is cutting ORD-LAX by one roundtrip. Considering that is hub to hub, I don't get it.

I don't see this as an NK response more than it is WN just running one flight on FL metal as opposed to WN metal.

I also notice that US is moving DCA slots around. I am surprised that there are more cuts to Canada. I can't believe that DCA to big Canadian markets isn't working, unless there are star alliance factors at play.

It's not WN+FL.

For ATL-HOU, FL has 5 nonstops a day and WN has 3 in July and 2 in August so it's either 8 or 7 for WN+FL depending on which schedule period you're looking at. The same error has been made on all of the city pairs that WN and FL metal both serve.

This is not unexpected by me; AS has gone daily-double on their SAN-SJD service (starting next month) plus in June, NK is starting n/s DFW-SJD. Actually Spirit's SAN-SJD service has varied in freq to some degree since it began last November but it seems to be holding together fairly well... It will be interesting to see if NK can hold its own and remain in this market. (AM ran it for years and finally gave way to AS.)

I don't see this as an NK response more than it is WN just running one flight on FL metal as opposed to WN metal.

It doesn't matter really. As with BWI-FLL, there's business for everyone.

And NK flyers seem to be new to flying as well as the airport.

I wondered about that as well. IAD-FRA has been at least 3x daily during the summer on UA for forever. I suppose they could be swapping a frequency with LH (although they didn't show any changes this week according to this report), but what would UA need the extra 777 for? Great to see a second Delta JFK-MSY flight. Sort of surprised by that one but I'll take it. That will make 13 daily nonstops between the three major NYC airports and MSY....5 on DL, 4 on UA, 3 on B6, 1 on WN.

Also nice to see the additional AA flights to DFW and MIA extended through the Summer. Hopefully these will be permanent additions. I especially love the 4th MIA nonstop.

AA ORD-DSM JUL 6>7 AUG 6>7 SEP 6>7 OCT 6>7

What's stopping AA from going mainline between ORD and DSM? This route is at 350 seats/day in the summer and 300 in the winter - they could save some fuel/ops/crew costs by turning three of these ERJ flights into one MD-80 (say, the early morning 6:30 a.m. flight). They already do two super 80s between DSM and DFW per day (plus one extra ERJ), so it's not like their strategy is purely on frequency.

Surprised to see this back, I think it was last hacked about a year ago. Operated by a CR7 according to Delta.com:

DSM - LGA: 7 am. - 10:45 am
LGA - DSM: 8:59 pm - 11:16 pm

Right now a six month advance booking for an out-and-back roundtrip is $543 - almost twice as much as the cost to connect in MSP or DTW. But with the flight times you can have a good afternoon in the city and still have time for a client dinner from 5-7 pm before leaving for the airport.

With UA's upcoming two ERJ/s per day between DSM and EWR (previously 1x), this means three flights per day between DSM and NYC. DL will be the only airline going to LGA, along with offering the exclusive premium cabin (9 seats), and onboard wifi as well.

I know multiple people in my company who commute almost weekly between NY and DSM, and DL will no doubt get a full F cabin (although I imagine it will come mostly from automatic status upgrades it's $2200 for a roundtrip booking in F).

Always a possibility which is why I'm hoping the community supports the LCC this time around, but I'm going to be optimistic too and say that it will all work out. Looking at other cities close in size to the Cincinnati area, all have similar frequency/capacity to DEN.

I'm told that Delta had already intended to use the A320 on the route for the summer but, as a response to Frontier, brought the start date forward to early May and upped it to daily, instead of 6 x weekly.

The fares are a variable. Frontier has already sold many of its intro fares, so some days, yes, the difference is as you say. Other days, it's about $20.

Hard to know it is a "response" or seasonal adjustment as DL ran mainline MD90 or A320 up through October 2012.
Unless you could tell if DL specifically made the upgauge in aircraft after the F9 announcement.

October is generally not a popular sun market time of the year. Winter seasonal increases generally do not start until either mid-November or closer to the December holidays. October is actually one of the most pleasant months in NYC, the Northeast, and for much of the domestic US.

Smart add by UA, DIK (Dickinson, N.D.) is greatly benefiting from the oil boom, similar to how ISN (WIlliston, N.D) now has CRJ's from both UA and DL.

This is the lowest WN has ever been on this route. It was up to 20x daily or so several years ago. Increased four-lane access and the Hoover Dam bypass has probably put a dent in the O&D.

Announced at the same time as MCO, and starts April 14 as well.

I imagine the frequency on this route is important to compete against UA and WN. It would be nice to see mainline on this, but 2x MD80 would probably only allow for 3 or so daily frequencies. UA usually has a mainline/express mix on ORD-DSM. Generally the mainline is A319/320 and often does a DEN-DSM-ORD (same with the return) routing.

Very nice add, although the return is quite late for most business pax and the morning flight arrives in a little late for any morning work. None the less it could be a much worse schedule and the two-class cabin offering is very nice. DSM-EWR is a little lengthy for a small RJ.

Yep. AA needs to maintain frequency to ORD in order to connect to the eastbound flights, Asia, and Europe flows. As we discussed in another thread, AA's scope and fleet has limited what they can do with ORD. 2-class RJs and A319s will help balance the frequency vs. capacity issue that has plagued their ORD operation for awhile now.

The nonstop DL DSM-LGA still arrives earlier in LGA than any current connection possibilities. The earliest you can currently get to LGA now is DSM-DTW-LGA, arriving at 11:57am. Some people might prefer to more reasonable 7am departure instead of the 6am flight which often means getting up by 4am.

On the return, currently the latest departure out is LGA-MSP-DSM, departing at 6:15pm and arriving in DSM at 10:46pm. With the nonstop you get an additional 2.5+ hours in NYC and arrive only 30 minutes later that you would now.

They have to balance the available slots within each time block and the routes they want to serve.

I expect this route will do better than their last attempt now that their LGA hub is up and running. The last time DL offered DSM-LGA, they didn't allow connections on the LGA end so it was solely O&D.

It's not so much of a response as much as its a realization that CVG is an undeserved market. Good job to both F9 and UA.

CVG isn't really an underserved market. It's overserved for its size flight-wise, but with one dominant carrier that charges exorbitant fares which handicaps the potential of the market.

The pulldown of the US hub at LAS has also given WN much more power to control pricing and yield via frequency.

There really are no connections on DSM-LGA that make any sense that can't flow over DTW, ATL, MSP.

For the most part, this is correct. MHT-LGA-DSM is only ~100 miles longer than MHT-DTW-DSM though and MHT-ATL-DSM doesn't even compare. I think it works in the (small) connecting world of New England-LGA-XXX.

Passengers don't necessarily care about distance, its time.

Example:
MHT-DTW-DSM Depart: 4:25pm Arrive: 8:36pm CRJ-CRJ
MHT-ATL-DSM Depart: 4:35pm Arrive: 10:00pm M88-M88
MHT-LGA-DSM Depart: 5:00pm Arrive: 11:16pm ERJ-CR7

The connection over LGA is the worst of the 3 options. Connecting in LGA is also asking for problems....

Interesting to note that this flight is a red-eye.

On Apr 24, there are the following flights LAS-BWI:

WN 265: 7:30a - 3:05p
WN 3414: 9:00a - 4:35p
WN 684: 12:00p - 7:35p
WN 2894: 5:15p - 12:45a [+1]
FL 1301: 11:30p - 7:05a [+1]

I have a feeling that red-eyes are here to stay with the "new" WN.

Correct, but FL flying isn't being integrated until the end of 2014...when do the flight attendant contracts come up for negotiation again? Why bother putting it in the WN contract if it won't happen for another few years? Honest question.

For what it's worth, Milwaukee is mostly changed from FL to WN, and historically AirTran's west coast flights nearly always included redeyes. In 2012 the WN + FL summer schedule included both daytime and redeye flights from LAX, SEA, SFO, LAS and PHX. This summer all the markets still have nonstop service -- 100% Southwest -- but none of them have a redeye.

No certainty that Southwest will never fly 'em, but a large chunk of legacy AirTran's redeyes were to MKE. All of those markets are now Southwest, and none of them kept the redeye flights.
