Hi everyone!

So today I was thinking about all my trips to Hawaii and I vaguely remembered a trip there when I was 5 or 6. The way I remember that the flight went was (It was on AA as per the title) ORD-HNL aboard a DC-10. When we got to HNL they made us get off and I remember sitting in what seemed to be AA's section of the airport and there were three total DC-10s parked at the gates. I then remember getting onto another AA DC-10 and we flew on to OGG, and coming home was the same deal (OGG-HNL-ORD). Now am I being totally crazy when I think about this? Or was there ever an actual routing like this, an inter-island route that AA flew?

Any help is welcome! I haven't been able to stop thinking about this all day..

Kyle

I remember flying to HNL during the same period, and I was a little bit older.

AA 73 / 72 was the long-time traditional flight that operated ORD-HNL and HNL-ORD
AA 5 / 8 was the long-time traditional flight that operated DFW-HNL and HNL-DFW
These flights had the same flight numbers for decades, even up through the past few years.

Prior to 1990
AA 73 DTW-ORD-HNL-OGG operated by a DC-10, same plane service
AA 72 OGG-HNL-ORD-DTW operated by a DC-10, same plane service

1990:
AA 73 DTW-ORD 757
AA 73 ORD-HNL D10

AA 5 DFW-HNL-OGG D10
AA 8 OGG-HNL-DFW D10

AA also operated D10 service to LAX, SFO, and a 2nd daily DFW. Not sure at what point AA launched SJC-HNL,

Same flight numbers that will operate this summer ORD HNL ORD

Yes

AA had a great operation back in the day in HNL. For a period of time they also flew to AKL and SYD with DC-10-30's. I remember taking the SJCHNL flights several times (it was the non rev express) in First Class on the DC-10-10.

If you really want to go back in time, AA had 707's they flew a pretty good operation to the South Pacific and JFK, ORD and STL.

Not sure at what point AA launched SJC-HNL,

AA started SJC-HNL in 1999 IIRC. They started SJC-OGG in early 2001 (along with the short-lived SJC-MIA on the same day). Both were discontinued in Summer 2005 (right after discontinuing SJC-BOS and SJC-JFK). SJC-HNL/OGG were both always flown with 757s.

AA did SFO-OGG with a 757 for a short time in the early 2000s also.

I remember taking the SJCHNL flights several times (it was the non rev express) in First Class on the DC-10-10.

To the best of my knowledge, AA never used a DC-10 on SJC-HNL. It was always a 757 for the six years the route lasted (UA did a DC-10 SJC-HNL for a short time in the late 70s or early 80s though, rather than the normal DC-8).

Yeah, that pretty much aligns with the data I pulled.

SJC-HNL started in May 2000. Interesting, I couldn't remember if AA flew in the early/mid-90s, but yes it was only flown with a 757 from 2000-2005.
SJC-OGG operated with a 757 in 2001-2005

AA never operated a scheduled DC-10 on SJC-HNL. By Summer 2000, the DC-10s were almost gone from the AA fleet with Hawaii routes being their last stand. The last DC-10 route was DFW-HNL until November 2000 when the last DC-10 was retired.

Yup. I remember I was in SJC in December 2000 and I saw the AA FA's walking to the HNL flight dressed up in those special gowns they wore for the Hawaii flights. They also flew them when I flew AA123 (DFW-HNL) in December 1999 and AA8 (HNL-DFW) in January 2000. Do AA FA's still wear these special uniforms still on the Hawaii flights?

Some of them wear leis or kukui nut necklaces, but I haven't seen any sort of special uniform within the past three years or so on AA.

Sadly, no. That used to be standard for all Hawaii flights, but I'm not sure if they issued those special Hawaii uniforms to all FAs at the FA bases that covered Hawaii (IDF, IOR, LAX-I, SFO-I), but they might have. I'm sure one of our resident AA FAs could clarify that.

I have many, many memories of flying to HNL from DFW, LAX and SFO on the DC10 with the FAs in those uniforms. That was always a nice touch on the Hawaii flights - definitely helped start a trip to Hawaii off nicely a few hours before you actually landed in the Islands.

I remember flying AA to Hawaii in 1989. We flew JFK-LAX-HNL-OGG on three different DC-10s. I remember on the HNL-OGG leg the crew gave me the flight routing map that they used to post on the cabin wall--it was from the aircraft's previous leg from ORD to HNL. I probably still have it stashed away somewhere! I definitely remember the Hawaiian FA uniforms, and I also seem to remember that there were cameras in the cockpit that they showed on the projectors during takeoff and landing--or am I crazy?

The following year we took UA, which also had Hawaiian uniforms. That trip included my one and only DC-8 flight, from OGG to SFO. On another trip a few years later, I took a UA tag from HNL to KOA on a DC-10 after missing a connection on AQ. Later I remember taking a number of trips via DFW, ATL and LAX to HNL on DL L-1011s, which were also a nice ride.

How things have changed!

Offhand guess: any DC-10 at OGG departed to the West Coast or, if it was destined beyond the coast, it first went to HNL. Longer nonstops out of OGG started with the 767. (There were nonstop DC-10s to OGG, starting early? 1980s.)

I think you're right. My recollection is that even DC-10/L-1011 flights to the West Coast generally went via HNL in the late 80s/early 90s. Not sure if the runway was lengthened at some point or if it was just a matter of demand. The only nonstop flight out of OGG that I took in that period was the UA DC-8 to SFO.

AA didn't start US Mainland-OGG routes until 1997, and that was LAX with the 757. AA started DFW-OGG-DFW in 2000/2001 when the converted a sub-fleet of 767-300s into a 2-class higher-density configuration specifically to replace the DC-10s that had been operating on the Hawaii routes.

Here is an older thread talking about OGG runway length:
OGG Airport Runway (by Cory6188 Feb 9 2004 in Civil Aviation)

The 767-300 was the aircraft the enabled OGG to have flights to the US Mainland beyond the West Coast.

NW started SEA-OGG-SEA with the DC-10-30 in 2004. When they switched to the 757-300 they routed the aircraft SEA-OGG-KOA-SEA.

From March, 1990 until 31 Jan 1991 AA did operate SJC-HNL utilizing DC-10s.
Flights were AA755 SJC-HNL and AA278 HNL-SJC. As this service was very short lived, many don't remember it.
The SJC-HNL that began on 1 May 2000 and the SJC-OGG that began on 15 Dec 2000 were always scheduled with the 757-223ER, though an occasional 767 replacement.

I was an AAL CSM at ORD for a few years in the 2000's and seem to remember having a short lived flight (can't remember the flight number) on a 752 that I think was a true "circle-trip" flight. It was routed ORD-SJC-HNL-OGG-SJC-ORD.

I could be wrong, but I'm almost positive that was the routing and all under one flight number.

Anyone remember something like this?

Not that I know of, unless it was something they did at the very end when AA was discontinuing SJC-OGG/HNL. There were separate SJC-OGG and SJC-HNL flights. They were evening flights to Hawaii, and red-eyes back to SJC arriving around 6:00am.

You are not crazy, I flew ATL-DFW-HNL-ORD-ATL in March 1993 when we took a vacation, that ended up being a house hunting trip, and by summer of that year we were living in HNL. We were both gold AAdvantage and took the Inter Island hop to OGG many times on AA on the DC10's for mileage runs or weekend vacations, average cost $88.00 r/t. There was several AA planes all around the end of the center concourse at HNL, from DFW, ORD, LAX & SFO, all connected to the flight to OGG. Both DL and UA also operated HNL-OGG flights in the 90's with the L10 or D10 respectively.

AA began nonstops from both DFW and LAX to OGG on 15 Dec 84. I believe that the OGG-DFW return required a stop at HNL.
These flights were discontinued when the double daily HNL-OGG connector DC-10 flights began in very early 1986.
DFW-OGG flights on the 767-323 resurfaced on 22 Nov 00.

If you really want to go back in time, AA had 707's they flew a pretty good operation to the South Pacific and JFK, ORD and STL.

Pretty good? It was very unprofitable because AA had no rights then from the west coast to HNL then. Markets from JFK/ORD/STL were much smaller. That's why AA made a deal with Pan Am to drop their South Pacific routes in exchange for some of Pan Am's U.S.-Caribbean routes.

My family flew AA from MCI to Hawaii over New Year's 1990-91. We flew out MCI-DFW-HON with the MCI-DFW leg on an MD-80 and the DFW-HON leg on a DC-10. Two days later, we flew HON-OGG on an AA DC-10. A week later, we returned OGG-HON on an HA DC-9/MD-80, then HON-SFO on an AA DC-10, followed by AA MD-80s to DFW then MCI.

Very detailed state of Hawaii history of OGG airport.
http://hawaii.gov/hawaiiaviation/haw...elds-airports/maui/kahului-airport

Excerpts:

The Superintendent of Public Works noted in June 1948 that Kahului Airport had two paved runways 400 feet in width and 6,900 feet and 6,000 feet in length...

In 1955, the airport consisted of 1,341 acres, and had three paved runways: Runway 2-20 was 200-feet wide and 7,000-feet long, Runway 5-23 was 300-feet wide and 5,000-feet long, and Runway 17-35 was 200-feet wide and 5,000-feet long.

There are many references going back many years to proposals for new and extensed runways (one proposal included a 10,500 ft. runway) but it appears that nothing has been done.

AA had those cockpit view cameras for a long time. They had them on AA 191 in 1979. In fact I think that the survivors of the people killed in the accident tried to get more money out of AA because the passengers "saw it coming" emotional stress before the crash happened. After 191 I thought the cameras were discontinued because of this.

That's my understanding too of why they were discontinued in the USA (AF still has them, among others). It's a tragedy to lose a loved one, but it will soften the loss if you can sue AA or whoever for money in a marginal lawsuit

I remember those DC-10 cockpit cameras lasting into '87 or '88. The second hand 10s that AA had picked up in the mid to late '80s weren't equipped with those cameras. They were sporatic for a time and then gone by '87 or '88.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, they were definitely around after 1979--I would have been too young to notice them in the 70s. I took trips on AA DC-10s in 1985 and 1987 and remember seeing them on some or all of those flights.

Those are a little different, I believe--the newer ones are nose and/or tail (on the A380) mounted, rather than in the cockpit looking over the pilots' shoulders as on AA DC-10s.
