IB are to operate the A330 on the MAD - LHR route from next week.

Is this for crew training/familiarization purposes or a permanent schedule (to replace the A340 flights or additional capacity)? What are the flying times?

I understood that MIA will also get the A333.

Seems it will visit once tomorrow, 20/2 and twice 21/2, not sure about days thereafter yet.

Perhaps this is replacing the once daily(?) A340 service to MAD from LHR? Surely they don't need the seats on the A340 (they just use it for cargo); so this allows there still to be significant more cargo stowage (as compared to A32x) yet reduces the number of seats. Smart move by IB if this is the case.

This is correct if we're talking about the A340-600 being replaced by the A333 on this route (only for crew familiarization flights anyway). However, in case it's the A340-300 we're talking about, then we must not forget that the A333 and the A343 are exactly the same size.

Iberia operates the A343 in two different cabin configurations:

254 seats: 36J / 218 Y
291 seats: 24J / 267 Y

The new A333s have 278 seats: 36J / 242Y.

must be for the training of crew and ground staff....

Does IB need to complete some hours before getting a longer ETOP certification?? that can be an issue as well.

I also expect to see the A333 sometimes flying to LAD, Canary Islands and TLV.

I think IB will have a blast with this machine, and they will regret not to order them 5 or 6 years ago... they are going to have 36J and 242Y so still with big premium cabin and more pax in economy compare with the A343 and cheaper to operate...

There's a lot of connecting traffic on this route - I've used it flying to Latin America from London - so the capacity is presumably needed permanently, and the A330 will be cheaper to operate than the A343.

Don't understand why IB chose CF6s for their A330s though!

Ask AY why they also ordered A333's with CF6's

It's not as if IB have any CF6s in their current fleet, they operate T500s on their A346s and BA of course operate loads of RR powered planes. Indeed with IAG's current and future fleet of T500, T800, with the T900 and T1000 to come, and a strong possibility of future TXWB powered A350s to come, they could have had a full set!

But enough of this PM style rant

They do provide maintenance for the (CF6-equipped) Spanish Air Force A310's, though that's only two planes, so nothing huge. Maybe they want to build up a CF6 3rd party maintenance capability?

Definitely. At that time, the A333's MTOW had already been sufficiently improved that IB could have ordered them for their route network; precious time has been lost.

Given the IB strike this week, are the A333 flights still due to come into LHR ?

Where did you get this detailed information? Was looking to fly on the Iberia A340 during the summer. I can find out what flight is operated by the A340 but it doesnt tell me whether its a -600 or a -300. Would rather go on a -300 or a combination of both.

Thanks.
