Hello All,

I may be in the minority, but I really like American's new look and I'm excited to see it in person. With the website, smart phone apps and the corporate headquarters signage already updated, it's only a matter of time before the new brand rollsout system-wide. Let's use this thread to report the changes as they occur in the airports, aircraft, etc. Pictures would be appreciated!

Thanks,

TWA1985

I would assume within the next few weeks at the hub airports, and at other larger destinations within the month. IIRC DL didn't take long at all to change signing at the hubs.

Years -

From company Q & A.

When will this start showing up at airports?

We will start with our hub airports in North America. New York JFK, Chicago, L.A., Dallas/Fort Worth and Miami. We’ll get those rolled out first, and then we will focus on other airports we serve around the country and around the world. But it will be a matter of years until fully complete.

For those in D/FW, you may we aware that there’s a full renovation of Terminal A ongoing which is being done with our new branding in mind. So you’ll see all the new signage, all the new branding at Terminal A during the first part of February. That’s going to be very exciting for us.

As for branding in airports, Only the slideshow on the gate monitors show the new branding, but then again, the new branding has only been around for two days.

Someone in one of the other threads said they were shooting for half of the fleet by the end of 2014, but I don't know if that was including new deliveries or not.

Here is a schedule AA has posted in it's internal event calendar. It says "New American Airlines Livery Tour". I don't know if this includes actually having a painted airplane there (probably the 738 from the debut) or if it just a multi-media show. Probably not open to the public, but might work for spotting. Except as noted, the locations are on the gate.

Anyway, here you go:
Tue 22 Jan Tulsa (Engineering, so that maybe at the hangar, not the terminal)
Wed 23 Jan Miami Concourse D
Thu 24 Jan Miami Concourse D
Fri 25 Jan JFK Terminal 8
Sat 26 Jan LGA
Sun 27 Jan DFW Concourse C
Mon 28 Jan DFW Concourse C
Tue 29 Jan ORD Concourse K
Wed 30 Jan ORD Concourse K
Thu 31 Jan LAX (Superbay)

After that, the 773 goes on-line. 2 are at VCV now.

Interestingly enough, FWA got a new Eagle ticket counter backdrop in the (now) previous "silver waves" design two days before AA filed for Chapter 11.

It will be interesting to see how fast it's replaced, but my hopes aren't up. At last check, the UA backdrop at FWA is still a tulip. DL, however, did rebrand FWA fast.

You are absolutely obsessed with FWA man. Gotta hand it to you, definitely the most adamant FWA supporter a.net has!

AA/Eagle has opened a bunch of stations during Ch11, and the ones that I'm familiar with (GCK, DRO) have a really crummy, thin vinyl ticket counter sign and gate sticker. Its like thin, cheap wall paper. MHK got it's signage pre-bankruptcy, and its a 3-D metal sign.

My hunch was that the vinyl signs were in interim solution (not just AA chastising it's small markets) until the new branding roll out. I'm sure there's a rollout plan for small markets like MHK, FWA, and the small markets AA/Eagle has opened in BK - I'm sure some of the stuff should be seen this year.

Sounds a lot like FWA's: a thin metallic-look decal attached to the wall. It replaced a plastic backdrop that Eagle had used for eons.

I'm sure that it's not a matter of if but when FWA gets the new branding. FWA does really well for Eagle, with 3-4 daily flights to ORD and 2 to DFW, and Eagle's market share at FWA last year went from 24% to 27%.

I'm just passionate about my hometown airport. Unfortunately, there are MANY here in Fort Wayne that think otherwise.

I too like the new image and logo design. However, it does not do much for the company having the rudest workers in the industry. I believe I saw a survey recently that listed AA the worst in customer service, friendliness, etc.!!! However, I do like the new logo.

This thread has absolutely nothing to do with the above comment. Every airline, including Delta, has some bad apples. I sure wish that this site---for airplane enthusiasts---could remain on that subject instead of inserting unnecessary comments.

I thought the same way about pre-merger Continental. Rude, terrible Customer Service and overall a bad experience. Though that may have just been because I was going through EWR...

Anyways... back to the issue. They have said that the hubs will get the updated signage first? Of the hubs is it safe to assume that DFW will be the first to completely change over? What about the American Airlines Center in Dallas and the American Airlines Arena in Miami? Wondering when CLL (College Station, TX) will get their updated AA signage. It's only a few days after the revealing and the color scheme is already starting to grow on me. Really looking forward to when American Eagle starts repainting their aircraft into the new scheme then they will actually resemble the mainline scheme unlike the previous Eagle scheme which clashed terribly with the AA mainline colors.

I'm definitely hoping that AA's airport rebranding effort looks more like Delta's and less like United's. The speed with which Delta replaced former NW signage and rolled its out new brand was really impressive. United is still pootling along with piecemeal replacements and disjointed branding at many of its non-hub airports. It's more cost effective to do it that way, but it comes at the expense of a unified brand image.

For what it's worth, much of the signage at AMR headquarters in Fort Worth has already been replaced - a positive sign. The first increment of the renovated Terminal A at DFW will open with the new branding. Since the remainder of Terminals A, B and C at DFW are scheduled to be refreshed under the TRIP program, my guess is that AA will hold off on rebranding those facilities until they close for renovation. ORD, LAX, MIA and JFK will hopefully happen quickly.

AA seems pretty serious about this initiative, so it'll be interesting to see how energetically they go about rolling out the new brand. Fleet repainting is one thing - that takes time, and they've got a lot of turnover scheduled for the fleet in the next few years - but airport facilities can be done either really quickly or very slowly. Hoping they go with the former option.

The United Center was rebranded over the 2011 offseason when the UA merger closed the previous October so my guess is the stadiums will stay as is for the rest of the season and get done over the summer.

Since BHM is in the process of a complete terminal renovation including ticketing and concourses/gate areas, I expect BHM will get the full new AA look much earlier than it would have otherwise.

There's also a classic eagle neon sign at LAX T4. We should be wondering about the fate of that as well.

JFK T8 has a four-logo AA logo retrospective (original eagle, postwar eagle, Astrojet eagle, scissor eagle), and I expect it to be updated by adding the new Flight Symbol and updating the scissor eagle logo from "1968" to "1968-2013".

Please put that on the discussion thread. I have to agree about the tail, but this is about updates and schedule for the new logo and livery introduction.

I wonder how fast their branding will go as compared to UA or DL with their mergers and livery updates. Until the CO merger, UA was updating logos at the speed of about one airport per year. The UA/CO merger logo updating is moving much faster. I imagine that AA will update their livery fairly quickly, partially due to all the the new planes coming in. But as for logo, I don't think it will be super fast. Add in the merger question, and this gets quite interesting.

I got a quick glance at a kiosk yesterday at LGA and it had the new logo on the screen. We all know the new kiosk software was released a month or so ago, but now they've added the new name and logo. Simple, but you can see how it all fits. So all were right to assume when that new software rolled out that it was a glimpse into the new AA.

Also, some gate monitors at LGA were sporting images of the new aircraft livery and logo, but the flight information and standby lists all appeared the same. That should be something fairly easy to roll out once the software is ready to go. Also, airports like RDU will be very easy to update to the new image since all airline branding is done digitally. There are no airline specific backdrops at the gates or ticket counters, only large monitors. I was at RDU yesterday and everything is still the old AA. I imagine it won't be long though.

From what I have heard through the rumor mill is that 3JX will be delivered in the old livery. The aircraft has been complete for a week or two, and incase the rebranding unveil had to be pushed back, and AA still needed to take delivery of this aircraft they wanted it to be in standard colors...

Look at it this way... this is your last opportunity to see a brand new shiney silver bird! They do look fantastic brand new and polished up!

3JT is currently touring though the hubs. It will be in MIA on the 23 and 24, JFK on the 25, LGA on the 26, DFW on the 27 and 28, ORD on the 29 and 30 and LAX on the 31.

Both 77W are currrently at VCV getting the new paint. Not sure if 3JX is in the new colors or not. I almost guess no since it was so far along in production but I guess we'll know later today after it ferries from BFI

Actually now that I think of it, there were already images of 3JX already painted in the new paint minus the colors?

So is 3JX painted in AA's new colors or not? When will it enter commercial service? When is the start date for N908NN, 1st of February?

Just saw the plane... Its really incredible. It was parked next to a 763, and it made the old scheme look outdated, beleive it or not. Loved the tail. You can appreciate all the details when youre standing next to it. Cant wait to see lots lf them together. Its gonna look very nice.

Thanks aacun. Can you let me know when this aircraft or 3JX will be flying to CUR (commercial service)? I'm dying to photograph it as well (night and daytime)!!! You can send me a private message if that works better.

My concern of the new tail which takes on an American flag theme is it is more recognizable when compared to to the old "AA" tail design. this potentially puts a bulls eye on a U.S. flagged carrier in that our flag is recognized worldwide.

Keep the new design on the the airframes which fly in North America. Find another tail design for the global flying in those not so friendly countries on the Department of State advisory list.

I'm surprised that they haven't revealed a logo for the American Eagle brand. They've already produced images for the AAdvantage brand, but nothing for Eagle. I actually feel that the MQ brand is the most desperate for a facelift.

I'm saying the U.S. flag is more recognizable than the word American. Many people in third world countries don't speak or read English but they do recognize the U.S. flag. I've traveled in Haiti, and other parts of Hispaniola, Africa and southwest Asia where they don't understand or read English but the U.S. flag is recognizable more than the word "AMERICAN"

The hybrid white DHL livery didn't look remotely American, and yet it was shot at by terrorists on the ground who knew exactly what they were firing at.

Personally I'd be more worried about the Air Force thinking I was on a Cubana plane in US airspace.

I think I saw passengers being escorted onto the airplane and the ramp at MIA today, but I'm not one hundred percent certain. The snack table and promotional materials were definitely open to the public, however.

Quoting qqflyboy (Reply 38):
Also, some gate monitors at LGA were sporting images of the new aircraft livery and logo, but the flight information and standby lists all appeared the same. That should be something fairly easy to roll out once the software is ready to go. Also, airports like RDU will be very easy to update to the new image since all airline branding is done digitally. There are no airline specific backdrops at the gates or ticket counters, only large monitors. I was at RDU yesterday and everything is still the old AA. I imagine it won't be long though.

And from MIA today, no signs of the new identity other than the software on the self-service machines and the screensavers.

It will be there 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. on the 29th, and then 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. leaving (for lunch I guess??) and on display 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. on the 30th. I like the livery, but there are two inconsistencies that bother me. First, in some places (like the AA website), the airline is branded as 'American Airlines' with the logo. Yet in other places, like the livery, it just says 'American' with the logo. It should be the same everywhere, the way Delta or British Airways do it.

Second, everywhere I have seen the name American + logo lock-up, 'American' is center-aligned in the middle of the logo. Yet on the livery, the name American is flush at the bottom with the logo. Just saw her in person at DFW C2. I do agree that it looks much better in person. Nice little PR show AA is putting on. They had FA, pilots and maint crews working at the gate, on the plane and the tarmac to answer questions and take pictures for you.

Hey Delta, I was just down there too, bet I saw you! I agree that it is much better in person. The grey body looked nice, even on a cloudy day like today.

I was pretty impressed that they were allowing people on the tarmac. The ramper I talked to down there wasn't too impressed with the new livery. He did say change is hard to accept after 25 years with AA, and that it was growing on him a little more each day. I have to

I sat in a MCE seat while on there. I was impressed with the roominess. It was better than I thought it would be. It was also my first time to see the new Boeing Sky interior. It was really nice.

On a side note, I haven't seen any evidence of the new branding in the Terminal A Admirals Club...

The one glaring problem with the new paint scheme are the winglets. They are simply painted gray like the fuselage. They used to have teh striping and AA.com. UA has blue winglets with a gold stripe. DL has blue winglets. I believe winglets on US has the flag logo, but it's been a while since I've seen a US jet up close. Virgin America has the U.S. flag waving in a breeze.

Couldn't AA have put the logo or a small version of the tail design on the winglet?

Every airline brand has inconsistencies. AA Has always used the "AmericanAirlines" text in print/web advertising, while using the shorthand 'American' on aircraft. Signage and materials not directly controlled by AA often use whichever logo.

Delta's livery is not entirely consistent. On some aircraft, the 'DELTA' titles appear smaller in proportion to the aircraft than they do on other models. The widget on the tail isn't always scaled the same either (the DC-9s have a larger widget compared to the MD-80/MD-90 tails).

United's post-merger livery isn't always consistent, either. On some aircraft (notably the 767 and 777) the UNITED titles are disproportionately huge compared to the narrobody aircraft.

AA's inconsistencies are comparatively minor. We'll see how things look once more aircraft start getting painted.

One thing I have noticed is that the livery lives and dies by the weather. On a sunny day, the scheme looks great, especially up close. However and unfortunately, overcast skies give the aircraft a more somber look. IMHO, pearl/metallic white would have been the best base coat. The simple presence of a metallic anything could be considered an ode to the brushed jets of the past, and pearl white would look much better in various lighting conditions.

For now, they will only be used on DFW-GRU as the route needs 2 aircraft:

AA963 DFW 2035 - GRU 1030
AA962 GRU 0055 - DFW 0720

In March, this route will switch back to a 772, and DFW-LHR and JFK-LHR will start. Next ones will be JFK-GRU (April), LAX-LHR (June) and a second DFW-LHR and JFK-LHR. This will make 12 daily 77W flights, so with only 10 77W aircraft this year, I doubt we will see them in other routes until 2014.

On display for employees and vendors to walk through, and to get everybody familiar with it. The 773 isn't that much different from the 772, but there are a few differences.

Unless you're a flight attendant or a passenger. The interior of this plane is a drastic step up from the 772, and far more advanced in terms of its cabin systems.

It is still undergoing its acceptance check at DFW (DWH) and is set to enter service on 30JAN. Here are the first few days routing, but it will probably change between now and then.

Hey N737AA, thanks for your very valuable information. It will come close to CUR (SJU-CCS) but I need it here  Do you know if this aircraft wears the new AA livery? Please keep us informed about any aircraft in AA's new livery. I think there are a lot of people who want to photograph them, including me

Both 7LA and 7LB are still at VCV with no routing information loaded yet, maybe tomorrow.
Quoting realsim (Reply 148):
For now, they will only be used on DFW-GRU as the route needs 2 aircraft:

AA963 DFW 2035 - GRU 1030
AA962 GRU 0055 - DFW 0720

In March, this route will switch back to a 772, and DFW-LHR and JFK-LHR will start. Next ones will be JFK-GRU (April), LAX-LHR (June) and a second DFW-LHR and JFK-LHR. This will make 12 daily 77W flights, so with only 10 77W aircraft this year, I doubt we will see them in other routes until 2014.

Great, again thanks for the information guys, I really appreciate it. I am hoping for the 77W to be used from their MIA hub as well. I hope there will be some schedule changes

The 773 will be parked at the terminal so employees can get familiar with things like jetbridge placement and fuel hookup. There are a few cargo handling differences and such. The 772 and 773 are a lot alike in some of the ground handling features, but there are some differences that need to be addressed. I wasn't referring to any of the cabin amenities or walk-up bar, etc. I doubt the fuelers or ramp guys really care about any of that stuff.

They're going to have both 7LA and 7LB here at gates D23 and D25 with D23 inoperative. 7LA has some private event going on right now, but there is an open cabin tour for employees at 3pm which I will hopefully do and get pics up here for you of the new interiors.

I think it's been confirmed N913NN (3JX) is in old colors, as is 3JY. I don't think AA would put a bird with the new scheme out on revenue flights until 3JT's tour was over. Next in line out the shop is 3KA, which I bet will arrive with the new livery.

If you are still set on checking it out though, N913NN is operating AA1303 tomorrow to CUR.

Beautiful shot. Amazing to realize how many years are covered by just three liveries, when practically every other airline would need several retrojets to depict the same time span.

BTW, it's always seemed to me that AAdvantage and similar service marks drew heavily from the double A on the tail. I feel like they've sort of "orphaned" these names given the new livery.

N737AA & TUSAA,

I just checked flightaware and saw that the MIA-CUR flight today is not operated by N913NN as I previously understood. Has there been a (last minute) schedule change?

All I'm looking for is which 737's have been painted in the new livery now and which are planned for repainting. As far as I know these are the latest 737's AA has now:

N913NN, N914NN, N916NN & N917NN. The last two I understand are still undergoing test flights so maybe these have not been painted yet. N914NN according to TUSAA still has the old livery. What about the rest?

I like the logo, but that tail is hideous! If I first saw this on a different website I'd be convinced it was another ugly fanboy fantasy livery...the titles on the fuselage aren't bad though.

I was planning on missing the polished bare metal livery anyway, so I guess I can't get too bent out of shape over this...

It's nice to see AA utilizing logo lights again. I understand the reason for disabling/discontinuing their use -- apparently the bulbs burned out a lot and required constant replacement. They just became too costly. Thankfully AA has committed to utilizing logo lights on all new delivery a/c, and will even retrofit the 772 fleet and some older 738s with the system. Here's what the company said about logo lights:

"Our plan is to install tail logo lighting on the majority of our aircraft:

"This includes modifying our order for future deliveries so that the aircraft will arrive with the lighting system already installed, consisting of the 777-300ER, 787, Airbus A319/321 and new Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

"We will also retrofit our existing base of 777-200ER and certain 738 models to include the lighting installation over the next two years.

"Certain fleets that will eventually be retired, including 767-200/-300, 757, S80, and some 738 aircraft will not be retrofitted.

"Like all things, the retrofit will take some time before it is finished. By 2015, over half of our fleet will have their tails illuminated. We anticipate that by 2020 over 80 percent of our tails will be illuminated, lighting the sky."

Also not sure they the above routings are coming from but for today 2/4 3JT N908NN is scheduled to operate flight 1438 SAN-ORD and then flight 1113 ORD-CUN. Looks like the new paint scheme will get all slimed up with the orange and green sherbet at ORD today!

While not exactly confirmation, N915NN is L/N 4322 and the aircraft shown in the following article to have been prepped for new colors. Whether it was delivered in full colors or just prepped for them like the 77Ws remains to be seen.

Caught the 737 arriving into BOS this afternoon as it passed over my workplace. Tough to tell whether I liked it in the low light/overcast. My first impression is that maybe if the flag didn't go all the way under the plane and just stayed on the tail it would look a lot better. Not a fan, but I want to see in sunny conditions...

Same source as above notes that it is in old colors as well. I'm not sure what the hold up is with Boeing and the new colors. Perhaps it is too complex for them to paint (or they are asking too much for it) and AA would rather get the 737s in service ASAP instead of having them sent out to have their paint completed like they do with the 77Ws.
