Unbelievable article. Who identify some of the airplanes photographed in this article?

I guess it's safe to repeat once again that money does not buy you style or taste.

This is pretty amusing, considering all the Boeing cockpits I've seen have sheepskin covers on the seats.

I can assure you Donald Trump didn't pay anywhere near $100 M for his 757. He didn't pay half of that amount. If he did then he's a fool and he's no fool on matters of this type. He wants people who don't know any better to think he paid $100 M.

Is that the interior of the 757?

Looks like the old 727 interior.

The only way to do that would be putting upwards of $80M in the interior.

A lot of these images seem to come from the jets of Middle Eastern owners. They prefer a style that is far more opulent, and to the western eye, gaudy. And Trump, who seems to prefer mostly the same things. The vast majority of business jets, even those owned by individuals, are probably far more understated.

Look at cars. Even on the most high end cars getting an interior similar in style to some of those planes will only be done on an aftermarket basis.

The guy's a good reality TV host. Nobody in New York, at least (where he was a local celebrity before he went national), has ever been convinced he's all that great on financial matters. He inherited his money and then pissed most of it away. He relies on the bankruptcy courts and his fame to allow him to get it back in a cycle that repeats every few years.

I could believe he overpaid for his 757, then outfitted it in such a way that made it a bad investment.

Love him or hate him his net worth has certainly appreciated over the years making this comment academic. Moving up to a 757 from a 727 is not the action of a person whose assets are on the decline.

While having your own 757 certainly can't be a tough situation, the inside of Trump's isn't exactly like some of those pictured, either.

I've never understood why so many private aircraft interiors/cabins look like bad discos from the 1970s.

Chalk it up partly to cultural differences.

But, you have to figure that these are the extreme ones. Most private aircraft are first and foremost business tools, and like you wouldn't see tiger prints in an office, you don't see tiger prints there either. These are just the ones that will get the most page views for the article.

The best private jet interiors I've seen are the Pininfarina designed interiors by this outfit in Florida. They are comfortable, tasteful, and damn cool.

There are many pics on this site of much more tasteful and classy interiors in private aircraft. Most of the pics shown in the article show cheap looking interiors, IMO. (even though they are far from cheap)

I'm willing to bet the 17th photo down has something to do with Turkmenistan, as you can see from the shape on the wall at the back (the outline of Turkmenistan).

Donald Trumps 757 had a long punch list of items that were addressed when his 757 was purchased from Paul Allen. To start the cockpit was upgraded to a 777 configuration. The existing interior was completely redone but the floor plan was not changed out. The wings received the Winglet mods and I am to understand these were special kits that had to be modified due to the sn of the ship. The engines were removed along with the engine pylons. New pylon bushings were installed. Most of the fuselage was brought down to bare aluminum and repainted. New windscreens...it also underwent a "B" or a "C" check...don't recall, so whatever the total bill was, the airframe received much expensive attention. The on board sound system is phenomenal!...it is like being at a live concert without the noise of the audience...while on the ramp...the airframe vibrates from the sound.

As far as gaudy interiors go, the biggest offenders I have experienced were aircraft from the middle east. Generally speaking their sense of style is incredibly ostentatious. Mr. Trumps interior pales in comparison and is fairly tasteful. While their does exist gold plating it is refined in detail, not in your face and over designed. Can't help the Trump logo (exterior)...it is what it is.

Exceedingly bad taste seems the universal order of the day in these Arab and American jets: new money and a lack of aesthetic sense is pervasive in all of these designs. What a shame when there are so many skilled designers out there.

Indeed, many superich just concentrated on making money, nothing else. They forget that good taste needs education and study, and that takes time. You cant buy good taste, but to get something super-bad, you surely need a lot of money.

Thats throne room on the Kingdom 744 is truly ridiculous, but some other curvy rooms on other planes are doing their best to rival it. Some of those Middle-Eastern princes probably have the worst taste in the world.

Jackie Chan is an exception among all those hideous interiors shown, though, or perhaps because, his plane is the smallest here.

Perhaps because the owners are reminded of good times in their youth. Some of those photos maybe somewhat old also.

Well spotted! I just wiki'd Turkmenistan Airlines and they apparently operate a 777-200LR as a government jet.

If any of those planes belonged to me with their rather outdated interiors I'd be too embarrassed to bring anyone onboard.

Fortunately I won't have that dilemma.

Thanks for doing the rest of the leg work! The first thing that came to mind for me was a 757 but I simply forgot they had that 200LR, makes perfect sense.

I also agree with the rest of the posters, the majority of those interiors are absolutely hideous.

Very cool! Regarding some of those photos, I expect the likes of Auric Goldfinger or Blofeld to walk into the cabin. Others look like they came from the old TV show "Space 1999".
Years ago, I was told about a site that had photos from several a/c in the Sultan of Brunei's fleet. Real pieces of work!

(One of) my dream houses would be to repurpose a decomissioned 743 as a private home. The upper deck would be the maste suite with office in the cockpit. Section 41 (first class cabin) would be TV/theater room. I think the old KL birds, with the long starboard galleys, work best; you could have a good size dining room on the other side. Etc.
Sigh....

How would they get a grand piano in an airplane, like that in the concert hall on the prince's plane?

I was told that pianos do not handle the stress of takeoff, landing, flight, etc. very well, hence the aluminum Wurlitzer electric piano in AA's 747 coach lounge/piano bar.

I found a youtube video; also there is an airliners.net post from 2006 under "Sultan Of Brunei Personal A340 Cabin Pics". The link takes you to a Russian site with photos from inside. I'm sure google will provide plenty of links, too.

We have a winner!!!

Many of these photos are old, so criticizing middle eastern taste is very unknowledgeable. I work on these airplanes out of Dubai and I have never flown or seen any of my fellow colleagues within business jets having these kinds of interiors.

Yes there are some extravagant people like Prince al-Waleed or Donald Trump and a few former African as well as Russian republics who does have a special taste. But for those who think they know middle eastern business jet interiors; take a look at Al-jaber, Royal jet, Dubai Airwings, Amiri Flight, Presidential flight before making false assumptions.

The 10th photo down looks a lot like Col Gadaffi's Airbus A340-200 (5A-ONE):

Personally, I think the grey looks horrible.

Mildly related: are there any photos anywhere of the interior of the French Air Force's A330-200? They seem to be much more secretive of its interior than the americans are with the VC-25s.
