Hawaiian Airlines announced today that they will add 31 seasonal round trip flights between HNL and SYD, BNE, and AKL during the busy fall holiday season (spring break down under) in September and October. This is in addition to the previously announced seasonal increase in service to SYD and BNE set to begin next month and last through the beginning of June.
This increase in flying will add about 8800 air seats to HNL.

Dang HA continues to explosively expand. I don't know what they're doing right, but if it is making money and creating demand for more seats, then more power to them!

Maybe a flight from HNL to NRT

They're like the American version of EK, but on a smaller scale (expansion-wise, anyway)

I am concerned. As a former paratrooper I keep returning to "A bridge too far". Is HA growing faster than might be sustainable in a 100+ dlr/brl economy?

No, it is simply meeting outward demand from a rich Australia which hasn't had a recession.

In the great scheme of things it isn't a large increase in flights and it is very very focussed.

If they're doing well, I imagine they'll add a few flights for Christmas/January which is the big holiday season down here.

Should be good news for Hawaii's economy too, since that is typically low-demand time from the mainland.

HA has great interest in several cities that currently have limited or no service to Honolulu. As more new planes arrive here, more new routes will be announced. The next route announcement will be amazing! My lips are sealed!

I thought you super-sophisticated Aussies didn't like our inferior US airlines? Or at least that's what you bray on about in nearly every post you make.

I fly to HNL about once a year - and always assumed July was peak period for Aussie travellers trying to escape the cold?

@777STL
We in Australia expect hot meals, included baggage and IFE on flights of such durations. (SYD/BNE to Hawaii is similar to Chicago to Hawaii).

Hawaiian Airlines is a higher service quality airline than other US carriers, and they do meet those standards on these nine hour flights.

Which is why they are thrashing Jetstar on the Sydney route, and have outperformed Air Australia on the Brisbane route, and have promising forward bookings to Auckland.

Winter - July - is a very good season for any tropical destination, but not the only one. Christmas/January is great, too, and what is now called "spring break" - for a very limited and very specific time, as these increases are.

I might wonder why Hawaiian isn't beefing up for July, but it could be aircraft availability or whatever CPA deals they have with the big travel agencies.

Oh, bless, K'man, taking nothing away from Hawaiian it isn't hard to outperform Air Australia - one of the most incompetently run airlines in the history of civil aviation. Flight Centre would only book with them if the pax signed a waiver against liability and the COO had no airline experience - he had worked for his family's catering company.

I know JQ is sold out in StarClass on July 21 HNL-SYD and the surrounding days are nearly full too. HA is also sold out on numerous days according to their website.

Many more to come

I hope there will be news in 2013. It is pathetic flying with Westjet on their 737's or their leased 757's when HA can offer widebody service with potential connections to Asia/Australia for those who are looking for an alternate provider.

Australia has not experienced a recession since the early 1990s. It's this lack of recession that has pushed living costs up (I would go into more details but it would be rather off topic).

Australia has not experienced a recession since the early 1990s. It's this lack of recession that has pushed living costs up (I would go into more details but it would be rather off topic).

But it is relevant to say that the lack of recession has lead to a historically high $A verses $US & E. Hence the higher demand between Australia & USA and HNL is the closest US point to Australia, which is why HA is adding seats. In fact its now cheaper to go to HNL than the Great Barrier Reef (somewhat), Northern Territory (a fair bit) or the Kimberlys (a bl**dy LOT) and it a LOT cheaper to take Amtrak, in a sleeper, from SFO/LAX to NYC then the Indian Pacific from SYD to PER.

To FACFLYBOY: a recession is defined as two or more consecutive quarters of negative growth, Australia has not had that since the early 90s as qf002 says. It would be reasonable to talk about the two speed economy, but that is definitely too far off topic.

Much of this additional flying is driven by the arrival of new A332 aircraft, as well as strong demand from existing (future in AKL's case) markets. The next 767 retirements are not planned until late in 2013 while there are 5 Airbus arriving in the next several months.

Very soon the A332 fleet will outnumber the 767's! (sorry - off topic a bit I guess)

You seem to be forgetting that 1) AC flies the B763 to the Islands; and 2) the NEO is coming to HAL and will be placed on West Coast routes.
