Topic: 747 With Unmarked Tail At LAS?

I was flying Alaska out of LAS yesterday evening (April 1, 2013) at 5:30PM, and during takeoff I noticed a 747 with an unmarked blue tail and mostly white fuselage at a gate at Terminal 3.

The blue color extended down into the fuselage (similar to the red painted section on Qantas without the kangaroo). It seemed like the airplane had "UNITED" titles, or at least the font was simial to UA's all-caps and in bold.

I know that there was a North American 767 parked at T3 with a solid blue tail, but I am pretty sure that there was another 747 with an unmarked tail. Maybe I'm confusing the two?

Does anyone have more information about this mystery airplane?

As the livery says, it's an aircraft United uses for charters. Usually military charters, apparently.

She'll be there again this afternoon on another chartered flight. The only lonesome B744-422 of UA in the old configs of 14F73C270Y.

N194UA is doing charters for Google. She has been in Tokyo and Vegas recently. Was home in SFO last night!!

That aircraft was leased to Atlas Air for a while in 2011. Looks like UA didn't want to take the time to completely repaint it after the lease so it still has the basic Atlas Air livery except for the name.

Anyone have any idea of what is going in Vegas? We had the United Charter flight, an Atlas Air B744 and an Allegiant B752 depart SFO for LAS today (02APR13). I'm thinking the 2013 NAB Show but that doesn't start until the 8th.

United 763 (came from EWR)
Air Berlin A333
Omni 763
Omni 772
Air Italy 763
Atlas 744 (seemed to me to be in full Atlas Colors...came from SFO)

There were some others yesterday, but I not sure what they were...

I spent hours yesterday trying to figure out where all these unusual flights were coming from. I know there were 3 nonstops to LAS from Dublin on Monday. Atlas 744, AirBerlin A-330 and Omni 763. North American had a 763 in from London Gatwick. United had a 744 in from Narita. Atlas 763 came in from Paris CDG on Monday night followed 30 minutes later by an Omni 772 from Nagoya. It was amazing. I know the North American 763 left for EWR just after midnight Monday night. The United 744 left for SFO at 6.00pm. The Omni 772 left about 11.00pm for Ft.Campbell, Norfolk, Portsmouth and then on to Frankfurt-Hahn. The Atlas 763 left just after 10.00pm for Fort Bliss and then on to Shannon. Atlas 744 made a quick roundtrip from LAS to SFO on Tuesday. Can't find what happened to the AirBerlin A-330 or the Omni 763. Also a World Airways MD-11 arrived Monday afternoon from SEA. It was on the ground for an hour or so and then took off for ONT. It was a spotters paradise on Monday.

With all the handcarry luggage and huge average size of US combat man, I often wonder how they can stuff their carryon bags and rifles sometime on board a chartered flight? Must be tough like Sardines!

I have heard for professional sports teams the owners and very senior mgmt sit in F then mid mgmt sit in J and players sit in Y. I would think it would be a similar arrangement.

Considering it is a charter flight there is a lot of space where cargo would be so there probably would not be many carry on bags that are big.

I have seen this bird a lot at ORD, but with UA sending its 744s to SFO soon will probably not be there too much longer.

There's a reason why this bird (N194UA) doesn't wear the same livery as other UA B744s. It will and only be doing CHARTER work. This bird is the only one in the old configuration and will not do scheduled flight. You'll see this bird all over the system wherever it is needed for CHARTER flight.

United really have that many charter flights which can support this dedicated 747??? (as well as other airline eg. Delta's A319)
I can't understand why they need a dedicated aircaft to do such flights, and sitting on the ground for the remaining time. It should cost them a lot to do so.

AFAIK, Air Berlin have gotten rid of their A333s. Are you sure it was an A333 and not an A332?

United does a lot of military charters. If you track the pics of N194UA, she is consistently near military fields. The same plane was use for the SF Giants returning from Detroit with the World Series Championship. And in this case, lots of charter work including the techie flights to Vegas and Tokyo (last week).

With UA fleet reshuffling, yes it's needed to have a charter ac over pulling a plane from the fleet. The fleet planes need their precious downtime to catch up on minor mechanical issues.

The A319 of DL you as, fly a ton. They do NBA teams among other sports, so they fly regularly.

Yes, there is. If you factor in NHL, NBA etc, there is definitely a need for a dedicated charter aircraft. Look at AC. They have a dedicated fleet of 5 or so aircraft just for charters.

Honestly, I was looking from a far distance and although I know it was an A330, the angle would not confirm a -200 or -300, so you maybe right. Sorry if the information was not accurate.

At NW, we had 6 747-100/200s which were dedicated for charters at various times towards the end of their service lives. They didn't have any special livery, but they were high-density configured(446) and were dedicated charter aircraft, with the odd occasion that they would stand in as an operational spare if a 742 or 744 had mechanical issues or something. But dedicated ships 6601, 6603, 6604, 6608, 6611, 6612 and 6613 were all charter configured at a given time.

Thanks all. In Asia, charter flight is not as popular as it is in USA.

I went by about 9:50 AM this morning. and the Air Berlin 330, Atlas 744 and the unmarked United 744 were all at Terminal 3.

I was just reading the LAS Facebook page and it mentioned the Air Berlin and one of the Atlas flights were both headed for Dublin. It mentioned the World MD-11 was headed for Tokyo and the unmarked United 744 was dropping some people off at Tokyo and then going on to New Delhi
