Today the City of Fukuoka on Japan's Southern Island of Kyushu gains its first non-stop air link to Europe, as KLM opens a 3x/weekly B772 service to AMS this morning. The AMS-FUK-AMS flight is codeshared with Air France.

This non-stop flight is in addition to existing KLM codeshares from FUK to AMS on Korean via Seoul and China Airlines via Taipei.

(There is also an existing codeshare from FUK to CDG on JL via Haneda and Narita).
KLM is really expanding in Asia ! Congratulations.

Did LH do a non stop at one time to FRA?

Nice. SQ flies 5x weekly SIN-FUK. Heard both loads and yields are good on the route. Might fly this route sometime later in the year.

Fukuoka's been doing well economically too from what I gather. Perhaps FUK can capitalise on its close proximity to the other Northeast Asian giants, Korea and Taiwan for growth and become a mini hub of sorts?

I wonder how this route will be doing. A couple of years ago KL had flights to Nagoya and Sapporo and this route was cancelled after some time. On the other hand, KL has added capacity to KIX and NRT continuously the last couple of years so maybe this route can work.

Dunno but BA used to fly there from LHR.

No, LH never served FUK. I use this airport every year during my annual Japan visits and it's a great airport to use, also enjoy a day's spotting there when I can.
Whilst the international terminal is seperate on the other side of the runway from the domestic terminal it's only a few mins on the frequent bus link. Then it's literally only two stops /6 mins to the central Hakata station for all the rail links onwards.
How handy is that compared to the distance out from the city that NRT or KIX is.

Yes, they did with 744 too. I am not 100% sure it was non-stop though. It may have been via HKG.

Actually, it's more like 10 years ago that they discontinued that run. Still I would have thought AF or KL would serve NGO first than FUK, but I suppose AY & LH beat them there and there's no sense getting into a blood bath at NGO.

Indeed, it didn't even made it to the end of W11.

Probably more to do with the numer of pax they see connecting at ICN than LH and AY. AFAIK AY has been on this route for a few years (and LH even longer), thus KL knows how much passengers it could get to/from NGO (and FUK). Moreover doesn't Nissan have its logistics division somewhere around FUK?

Did not AF fly to FUK way back in the 70s or 80s? Can someone check? with B707 and many stops?

Congrats to FUK and KLM!

The AFKL network in Asia is truly outstanding. Hopefully there's more to come, I'd love to see cities like TSN or KMG added as well.

Looking at the pics... Did KLM rename the plane to "Fukuoka"? Look at the Kanji on the front of the plane.

Or do I need glasses now?

I see the same thing as you... So maybe we both need glasses !

Nice to see that Fukuoka and KLM did a nice job of introducing this flight with the proper fanfare.

Loved this video from the KLM Magazine linked from the URL above:

I've been to Fukuoka a couple of times and it's a very pleasant city, cosmopolitan, laid back and very Japanese at the same time. Not to mention that it's a great base to explore Kyushu from. You've got great onsens like Yufuin, Beppu and Kurokawa, mountains like Mt Aso, and interesting cities like Nagasaki, Kumamoto and Sasebo just a stone's throw away.

Best of luck to KLM on this new venture !

Did you got your routing correct ?! INN is Innsbruck. Why to go all the way to Austria and then to HEL?!
