Currently an Airbus A340-500 is being prepared for AZAL Azerbaijan Airlines. The aircraft registered 4K-AZ85 will have a great new livery. The engine nacelles are dark blue, the front of the fuselage as well in dark blue in a wave pattern, with a lighter blue waved line below the dark blue. Light blue Azerbaijan titles which are relative large but not billboard size. The photo I saw did not show the tail.

AZAL will operate the aircraft to Asia and America.

Very colorful but I like what they have currently. The wing on the tail on the new one looks very similar to what other airlines have. That kind of livery seems very popular now.

I do like it the tail reminds me a bit of ET in terms of design not colour.

It looks great (except maybe the serif-style titles) but the retro-ish current livery would have looked great on the 345 as well. Azal seems to like changing its livery, I still remember the first one with green and orange.

If it reminds me of something, I'd say Safi A340 (which in itself was based on AirPlus Comet).

At least I am not the only one who thinks it is just plain and absolutely dreadful. I am shocked to see such a bad and uninspiring design in 2013... even other former Soviet carriers like Aeroflot or S7 have moved to Western typographies.

It looks like what you would expect out of Azerbaijan... in the 70s (and not in a nice "retro" way). It is not helpful either to change the image of the country (which is one their government obsessions). They have this motto "Azerbaijan: land of fire".... why not doing something nice related to it on the livery?

Btw, where do they plan to fly to? I know the Azeri government has (still) money to burn... is there any business case to open a GYD-JFK or just a vanity route? Where in Asia could they fly to?

Could it be possible that this aircraft will be used by the government? Although looking different, the government Gulfstream (4K-A106) also have a dark blue livery...

MSN:894 was not taken up by Kingfisher... my question is: did Azerbaijan get a big discount to take this aircraft? Can't believe they will operate this gas-guzzler machine and expect to make a profit... unless it will operate for the government in a VIP Configuration.

Urgh, sorry but that looks terrible IMO - incredibly they managed to make an A340-500 look ugly, which can't be easy. For me, the two shades of blue clash horribly and all the dark blue makes the livery look rather top-heavy.

I love Air Tahiti Nui's livery but it looks nothing like this one. Maybe if the light and dark blue were swapped it might look mildly similar.

I agree. Tahiti Nui is a great looking aircraft. A few months back, I got to see four of those parked out at remote west here, in a row. Probably the best that ramp's ever looked, which is saying a lot, since we get pretty much everything parked out there.

...and one of the world's most unique liveries was just discontinued. There's a lot that can be read into the reason for the choice of blue, but it looks like the painters just threw on a bunch of blue paint, and where it settled is what the final product is. At the very least AZAL could have added a red and green stripe on the tail.

It's nice enough but I'm not overly impressed with it, kind of reminds me of a private A340 with really dated looking titles. The current livery is much nicer, it's retro in style but very unique and those straight lines complement the shape of aircraft far better than this trend to have waves and curves in new liveries.

This is awful. They have money to burn on a gas guzzling A340-500 but can't even hire a professional graphic designer to do the livery... Also, I feel like I've seen that tail before, just can't quite figure out what airline it was (or maybe it's just too generic looking, I don't know).

This livery stands out no doubt, and spotter will love it, but the result is still not something I´d be too proud of as a designer. Serif titles on such a wavy flamboyant livery, and then a nondescriptive tail "logo" dont go together. But at least I am happy its not another boring white two-engined plane with some paint on the tail. That alone makes me to raise my thumbs already these days.

Exactly. I am not a graphic designer, but I can see when a livery (or any graphic document) has been made by a professional and when it has been by someone playing with Photoshop. In this case, it is obvious in which side it is

Even that choice of blues is hard to justify for anything related to AZ (just one of the colours of the flag... and it is a different tone).

Apparently, it is popular in this forum though.

Well, if they want to fly to the US, there really aren't that many options especially if the destination is IAH, and certainly not much cheaper either. The A345's are probably dirt cheap these days.

What superb livery, always felt they needed a modern, bold and confident look and this is it, and that its inspired by Air Tahiti Nui is the best thing that could have happened, the livery looks even better from a distance as can be figured by the thumbnail image of database.

I would love this for PIA in shades of green.

I don't understand why the bannernews section editor is voicing his opinion on the outgoing livery:

"Azerbaijan Airlines - AZAL - AHY have a good livery but they just rolled out a new livery on a A340-500 and its even better."

In any case the new livery is not JUST better, its FABULOUS compared to the out going one,.

Better is used in cases like what Aer Lingus did in the 90s improving the livery making the good even better, or Singapore Airlines in the 80s, but you cant apply it to something like what Korean Air did going from the 1970s look to the current bold scheme in 1984, that wasn't a case of good going better it was good, or actually dull and outdated going Fantastic, Awesome, Superb etc, not JUST better.

Anyways editors should be neutral and not force their opinions on others, its like saying the 1980s Virgin livery was good but the 2000 one was even better, hunh?? no the latter one was not better it was Amazing a transformation, not a minor change that made the boring 80s one better as in the 90s version.

Pretty random (as in - no reference to anything Azeri), but okay livery. But really, you don't need to be a designer to see that the font, it's setting and positioning contradict the simpliest typographic rules. Only thing worse would have been "Azerbaijan" written in neon-yellow-colored Comic Sans letters.

Azerbaijan is an oil state.

It hasn't been clarified yet. Is the A345 an airline aircraft of a government VIP aircraft? I thought it was the latter.

As a sidenote, SOCAR, the state-owned Azerbaijani oil company acquired ExxonMobil's retail distribution network in Switzerland a little over a year ago. They're just now starting to change all the former Esso stations (more than 170) to the new SOCAR branding. I went to fill my tank a couple of days ago at the Esso station I've been using for years and was surprised to see all the signs had changed from Esso to SOCAR.
http://www.socarenergy.ch/en/news/so...-esso-schweiz-from-exxonmobil.html

Azerbaijan has been the 2nd largest supplier of crude oil to Switzerland (after Kazakhstan and ahead of Algeria) for the last 3 or 4 years. Prior to their political upheaval, Libya was #1.
