I take DL178/179 a few times a year when heading to Europe. It's typically an A330-200 in the summer, 767-300 in the winter.

I booked a flight PDX-AMS-LIS and noticed it's an A333 - Sep22. Same for the return on Oct 5.


Is this a real upgauge or just a placeholder in the booking system? I know the -300 was used for 6-8 weeks last summer, but it quickly went back to 767.

PDX is just getting some of the refurbished 767s (I'm on one PDX-NRT in a few weeks), but the AMS leg I think is still the old configuration 767.

Anyone know the true plan?

The A333 has been operating daily PDX-AMS since March 30th and will continue until sometime in fall where it will downgauge to daily A332. Winter is currently scheduled as daily A332.

I think Delta adding PDX-CDG is a real possibility and has been rumored for some time.

I could see something like:
PDX-AMS daily 767
PDX-CDG daily 767

The information is correct.

The significant capacity increase on PDX-AMS from a 1x daily B767-300 & A332 (most of summer 2012) to A333 for all Summer 2013 is part of Delta's decision to raise overall capacity from USA to AMS by 10% in Summer 2013.

SEA will also see a big increase as the frequency is raised from 13x week to 14x week, plus larger aircraft:

- Summer 2012 was 1x daily A333 + 6x/weekly B763

- Summer 2013 = 2x daily A333 (starting May 5, 2013)

Cool, didn't know that. Great news about daily in the winter, the 4/5x daily in the past winter has been tough to plan around.

The -300 adds 59 extra seats a day, mostly economy. Business must be good at Delta with good feed from Alaska to support the extra lift this early in the year?

I have also had the privelge of being on the newly refurbished 76s on PDX-AMS! It's a nice welcome. Too bad we are going back to the A333..lol. it's a nice ride as well

The 332s and 333s are all to get lie-flat seats in Business from Fall 2013 through Spring 2014, so one might anticipate some squishiness in the A330 schedules.

I'd rather see London on BA - long shot of course, but give us some choice.

BigGSFO - I believe PDX is the largest international market not currently served out of LHR. Not a huge amount of passengars a day each way, but it's not zero. So, you wonder if BA could make it work in a few years with 787s....

The macro Portland market needs to grow from 14million pax a year to support additional long haul flights, but hopefully we get another Europe flight and eventually a second Asia flight (South Korea or China would be nice).

Delta has cut a number of non-stop services from USA->Europe (example Budapest). To maintain a market presence in these destinations DL now offers connecting services via AF/KLM over AMS & CDG, so capacity to these hubs had to be raised.

Both cities are served from SEA which is less than 200 miles from PDX. I don't really see BA starting route to PDX.

Lots of European cities XXX are already served with single-connection routings PDX-YYY-XXX. PDX-SEA-LHR-XXX would hold limited appeal although it would surely add some 3rd-tier European airports.

PDX can more than support either route independantly. The suggestion that people in Portland connect through Seattle because of its' proximity is one that most Portlanders balk at. Pretty sure the Portland/Vancouver metro area and the feed from Alaska would support favorable load factors on the mentioned flights.

I will disagree with you there...according to the 2010 census the greater Cincinnati metro area had a population of 2,130,151 residents while the greater Portland/Vancouver metro area had 2,226,009 residents...slight difference but nonetheless Portland would be the larger city.

In addition, if antitrust immunity is approved, Delta plans to begin new nonstop service between Seattle and London-Heathrow, expanding competition on that important business market. The new service would complement Delta's growing international gateway in Seattle.
