INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Non-daily operations create fractional weekly service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. If a flight operated 5 days out of 7, it would show 0.8 flights.

WHY ARE THERE WEIRD FREQUENCIES IN FAR AWAY MONTHS FOR LCCs?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. Their schedules may also end mid-month. If B6 loads their schedule until Jan15, all flights in Janaury will show half frequency because of the way the report is created.

WHY IS A WHOLE AIRLINE'S SCHEDULE SHOWN AS CHANGING FOR A FUTURE MONTH?
Similarly to the previous question, some airlines load their schedule from nothing inside the 9 month window of this report. When their schedule is extended it will show as new service because there was no previous schedule to compare to. In some instances I will show a more valid comparison against another period.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE PINNACLE
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THE FREQUENCY DOESN'T SHOW A CHANGE, E.G. 4>4
This happens as a result of rounding. There is a change in service that is large enough to be listed, but through rounding it does not appear.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

NOTE: It appears that something changed recently and now we are seeing flights that are not available for sale such as scheduled charters. It does not appear there is any way to detect them as of now. They will now appear when they change.

WN doesn't appear in these threads most of the time - they tend to announce all their changes at once each time they make a schedule extension, which is when they are included here as well.

Bos to both pdx and sea are long thin routes. I'm not sure what the heck they are doing here.

Same competition as jfk (no lga flights to these markets) and much smaller market. I'm surprised bos pdx can even support one a day.

What a stupid bloodbath. B6 is all grown up!

10x DCA

Impressive.

Time for UA to start FWA-DEN, with zero three-way fare war, zero competition whatsoever from WN or F9, and a larger O&D market than SBN-DEN (which is currently being served by F9)?

These markets see signficant variability in the number of frequencies, depending on the day of the week. For July, DL pulls way back in capacity into these markets during 4th of July week, when business travel is very light to non-existant.
Due to the nature of the way enilria agregates the data, on average they operate at the numbers show above. DTW-EWR ranges from 3-7 flights per day in July, depending on the day of the week. DTW-IAD ranges 2-5 flights per day in July, depending on the day of the week.

DTW-IAD gets a CR7 2-class RJ on the RON flight starting in June. This will be the first time in several years that DL put a 2-class aircraft on DTW-IAD.

Didn't see this coming. This will make PDX-BOS 3x daily on AS/B6. Retaliation against AS for starting a 3rd daily summer SEA-BOS?
Quoting enilria (Reply 10):
Don't forget their SEA-ANC!

...or AS's new SAN-BOS route.

This skirmish between AS and B6 seems to be extending almost weekly now. What will happen next? I didn't think either of these cx had planes to spare, or the philosophy that allowed flying lots of empty coast-to-coast seats just to try to make a point.

B6 BOS-PDX JUL 1.0>1.7 AUG 1.0>2

This is very surprising. As said above, it's surprising this market can even support one daily flight.

Why surprised? PDX is a booming market once again.

YOY PDX summer schedule has added quite the capacity...

Compared to summer 2012, Summer 2013 additions will be:

B6 PDX-BOS additional daily...between AS and B6 there will be 3x daily this summer.
AA PDX-ORD new 2x daily
UA PDX-CLE new 1x daily summer
AS PDX-FAI new 1x daily summer
AS PDX-DCA new 1x daily
DL PDX-DTW additional daily
UA PDX-ORD additional daily
AC PDX-YYC additional daily

Wouldn't be surprised to see AS bring back PDX-MCO and AA add PDX-MIA now. Or DL add its rumored PDX-CDG alongside PDX-AMS.

I wouldn't call the route long and thin.

BOS-PDX is almost half of BOS-SEA with the same seasonality. Agree with you with 3 flights possibly being too many.

That is not why B6 is doing this. B6 doesn't care about a booming PDX market. What does B6 have going on today? A whopping 4 flights?

This is a d**k measuring contest that B6 never ever got into before. Since they have taken a stand in BOS, they have gotten into it more and more. That's why I said "B6 is all grown up."

Same thing with SEA:

From JFK you have 3 on DL, 1 on AA, 1 on B6. B6 increases to 2 this summer (this is normal for them). 6 Daily flights

From EWR you have 2 on UA 2 on AS. 4 flights

NYC market: 10 daily.

From BOS:

2 Daily AS, 1 Daily B6

Going to 3 each this summer for 6 daily.

To put that in perspective, there are an equal number of flights from BOS to SEA as JFK to SEA this summer. Both on LCCs.

Boston has a population of 625,000 people.

Queens alone (to negate the whole EWR factor) has 2.2 million people.

The number of flights from BOS to SEA and PDX this summer will result in a bloodbath for both airlines.

This bloodbath started when B6 decided to enter the SEA-ANC market with 1 daily flight vs the 10 daily on AS.

I want you to see the irony...1 little flight (not even worth it for B6) has spiraled into a trancon bloodbath.

NOTE: It appears that something changed recently and now we are seeing flights that are not available for sale such as scheduled charters. It does not appear there is any way to detect them as of now. They will now appear when they change.

Now what did you see on this list that was a scheduled charter? If you saw something weird that you didn't see last week I'd definitely report it, such as Ultimate Jet Charters schedules from LUK.

They need some good news. Strange to cut in July.

From what I saw it's only july. It's 2x per day in August and September still. F9 will be 1x daily (? correct me if I am wrong) and UA will have 2 flights, one morning and one night.

They appear to be slightly adjusting frequency during the hurricane season in the Caribbean. Hardly anything to be concerned with.

You've done a good job of summarizing the current situation except I think this all started when AS announced SAN-BOS (on 11/16/12); then B6 countered by announcing SEA-ANC, etc., etc. Who knows when it wil end...

Maybe, maybe not. But I would think most agree that it is way too few pax to support the service being offered this summer!

In fact, I think your figure for summer is high. According to the DOT's Table 1A for 3Q12, SEA-BOS's total O&D pax averaged 1,138/day which makes the PDEW for last Jul-Aug-Sep about 575; the PDX-BOS PDEW was ~310 for the same quarter. Bottom line: WAY too much capacity even if some connecting traffic is included...

You want to compare metro areas

16 million vs 4.5 million.

Quoting jfklganyc (Reply 30):

Population doesn't always simply equate to Market Size. Geography, History, Immigration, Business all play a role.

Quick examples

NYC-London is 5 times larger than BOS-London which is equivalent to the population ratios
NYC-Aruba is only 2.5 times larger than BOS-Aruba
NYC-GRU is 11 times larger than BOS-GRU

However there are a couple markets that are larger from Boston due to Azorean and Cape Verdean populations in the metro area: PDL and RAI.

SEA-Asia dwarfs BOS-Asia. Boston's metro is 1 million folks bigger.

I wouldn't predict a total bloodbath - Played around with ita's site and haven't seen many non-stops under 400 and those were a couple select AS flights in late August. It will be interesting to see the Q3 data from this year.
