Not the biggest thing in the world but the evening CMH-MSP flight is getting an MD90 at least six days a week during mid-summer. Don't know if that has happened before, but I dont think there is a great deal of mainline service on CMH-MSP normally.

My SJU-ATL on July 17 has been upgraded to a 753. I think this summer is the first time DL is scheduling 753s into SJU. In July there are 2x 753 on SJU-ATL.

I'm surprised to see all of these upgrades to SEA. This relationship between DL and AS is getting quite interesting. Especially if they would launch the SEA-LHR flight, side note does anyone know how many daily flights DL has in and out of SEA?

No. DL went 2x 763 last summer and even 3x for a few weeks I believe. DL and NW before ratchet up MSP-SEA every summer as loads go ballistic.

PDX and GEG are similar from MSP. GEG goes 3x 757 from 2x on 320/M90.

Is this a 76Q or a 76D that's being ferried out for NRT? If it's a domestic, that definitely is interesting. I have a hunch it's an international 767 as Delta has done this on PDX before, albeit for short periods.

A lot of the 763 upgrades typically happen each summer.
The most interesting ones are the the 763 on ATL-DEN.

757 service back to CVG, its been a few years.

DTW-OMA gets mainline A320 back on 1 flight day during the summer. This hasn't happened in at least a decade, if ever.

I noticed that STL-MSP goes up to seven flights this summer, it seems to have been largely held at six recently. It will be operated 4x M90 / 2x E75 / 1x CR9. STL-ATL also returns to 2x 757 / 3x M90 / 3x M88 this summer.

This has been mentioned in previous threads, but the change to 2x 319 / 1x CR7 on ATL-BMI this summer is also interesting.

SEA sees major upgauges/frequency bumps this time of year by Delta. Everything in that corner really including PDX and GEG. Also the start of the seasonal DTW-PDX run.

Daily 76Q starting on 06/10. DL 773 gets the 76Q. An additional noon departure is added w/738 equipment and DL 1576 is downgraded to a 738. DL 1357 (currently 1287) remains the same. On 07/02 1357 bumps up to a 752.

Here's a good one I bet no one saw coming...

JFK-STI 4x 738

There's never been this much traffic on Delta to Santiago. The route is about 80% VFR if not more and the fares are always high. During peak season, both 737s are usually PACKED. F almost never sees any sales but the a/c itself will be booked to 160 (coach being oversold by 16 or more).

JFK-LAX 4x 76Z, 3x 752 (starting in June)
JFK-SEA 4x 752, 1x 76L ^^^^

Previously announced but worth mentioning

LAX-LAS 4x 319, 2x 728, 1x CR9 (has matured quite a bit in 3 years; was all DCI)
LAX-SFO 10xCR7/9, 1x 738

ATL-ANC 1x 757 (has not operated for quite some time)

Primarily increased aircraft utilization.

Less capacity to sun markets in the summer (e.g., DTW, MSP, Northeast - Florida), redeployed on West Coast and Summer vacation destinations (Alaska, Mountain West, West Coast).

Some other cool ones:

320 on SLC-YVR. Not sure when that route last saw mainline.
764 on ATL-JFK. Upgauge from the usual international 763.
Daily 76W on DTW-ATL. I don't think this has typically been daily in the past. Better utilization of the aircraft that flies DTW-GRU.

It's a domestic 763. Of course, the schedules aren't set in stone yet (I don't expect the June schedules to be firmed up for another few weeks), and I'm noticing aircraft switching around every week at this point when the e-timetable updates. I'm hoping that ATL-PDX, ATL-DEN, and ATL-FLL keep their daily 763 rotations.

One big item is that DL has more international planes than it currently needs. Capacity to Europe is way down this summer compared to years past, so DL has more planes to play with domestically.

Quoting avi8 (Reply 23):

Where does DL get the enough aircraft felxibility to do these things? Look at all these adjustments and frequency increases. Where do they get the aircraft surplus from?

1) A lot of capacity is removed from the network during the winter. Several planes are pulled from the aircraft fleet and either stored or sent in scheduled maintenance or refurb work. Some planes are just under utilized but still remain in the active fleet. Other planes are scheduled into charter work. Bottom line, Delta has a lot of flexibility with its existing fleet and has for several years now. They could expand even more if they wanted too, but their focus is on maintaining capacity discipline. They add back just what they feel the heightened summer demand warrants and pulls the capacity down again after summer (seemingly increasing the amount of the pulldown every year).

2) Also, Delta is currently bringing online almost 100 used MD90s and they start taking deliveries of 739s later this year. While most of these aircraft are for fleet renewal/replacement, they will be replacing smaller jets and much smaller jets in some situations. However, if the situation warrants they can always delay a retirement or two for added flexibility as needed.

There is a lot of flexibility in the domestic fleet and with the MD90s and 739s coming onboard there will be even more. On the international side Delta has not flown their fleet near maximum utilization for some time, they have couple planes in the desert, several in mod work, and some in the active fleet that just arent being utilized as much as they could. Considering that Delta believes in maintaing an older low-cost fleet as oppose to high capital intense new fleet, expect this situation to occur for quite some time where they have the flexibility to park aircraft at little cost and maintain the flexibility to add and remove capacity as needed with short lead time.

Yes, it operated as an MD-90 and also once as MD-88 IIRC. This is an oddball route and really took CMH-SLC out as an option for this market (CMH, my base). SLC-CMH-SLC once operated as MD-90 for a while also. But MSP options plus the (now on again) seasonal 3x weekly CMH-LAX-CMH route, team 614 is well covered Westbound.

I believe you are correct.

I'm wondering if the 753 has not been used at SAN in the past due to space limitations at our domestic gates? Starting this month, DL will begin using new gates (as part of the Green Build's gradual opening) which perhaps allow longer a/c... (I guess I'll have to check the length of the 753 as compared to the 763 that has been used here forever by DL and AA, and others.)

Anyway, it's nice to see a new bird in town!

Miami area (Including PBI, MIA, FLL areas) in the summer are quite busy. I see your logic, but the ATL-FLL 763 is easily justifiable, mostly filled by connecting passengers from cooler north/international areas.

Thanks for the figures. (I still hadn't a chance to look it up myself.) So I guess the length of the 753 hasn't been an issue at SAN; I know that at least 1 (possibly 2) of DL's regular gates is 763-capable. In past summers, we've seen as many as 3 DL 763s serving SAN and it appears that this year, more cities are seeing the Fat Ladies with the 753s now replacing some of the past 767-service.

With new (Green Build) gates 42-47 opening any day now, and existing gates 37-41 temporarily closing for re-modeling, I'm not sure which of the new gates are wide-body capable. (I don't believe it's all of them.) I guess we'll find out soon!

Looks like it will be a good summer but no cool upgrades for PHX this summer   hopefully the 753s stay on the PHX-DTW run.

What is it about the 757 that you don't like vs. the 738.

RSW-DTW is currently 3x 753. I don't know if this is a HUGE upgrade as the route is usually 3x 752 but it's something.

ATL-FLL 763 ...Awesome! Its like the 90s Delta. They need to add the 763s back into LGA and I am a happy camper.

I was going to say the same about FLL. I remember only 5-6 years ago having several widebodies ATL-MCO/TPA/FLL/MIA, even JAX had 767 turns. I took the 777 on ATL-MCO back in 2006. A permanent LGA turn or two on the 763 wouldn't surprise me at some point down the road, given the O&D and the new hub on the LGA end. Here's to hoping!

A320 was on the route last spring for a brief time; one afternoon turn.

Also note, IAH/MSP will have 6 flights a day beginning in September. Have not seen that much frequency since the NW/CO alliance days.

It also looks like one of the SLC-DEN frequencies will be on an A320, at least through July. This route has been all CRJ for quite a while now.

2x 320 till June 10 then its 1x 320. then it goes the CR9 AUG 20.

Also looks like LAX-BOS got a week added to it.

looks like your getting a 753 on the morning ATL-PHX flight. start June 10
but DTW takes a fairly big cut. nothing but 320s and 738s.
LAX gets the 5th flight and two CR9s.(over CR7s....yeah I'm reaching.)

MCO has a few 753s. TPA/MIA are mostly M88s/M90s.

Nor would it surprise me. We just got 2x 757s on the route recently so they must be doing well!

MSP-BOI 2x 320 2x CR9
MSP-GEG goes to 3x 752

I'm not familiar with the others, but I'm assuming you aren't referring to these as new upgrades. I think these all existed in prior years.

Quoting burnsie28 (Reply 39):
That was back when they were doing PDX-HNL...

How long ago was that? Just last July I was booked on a 753 from MSP-PDX but ended up changing and going to SEA instead so I can't verify for sure it was a 753 that went to PDX, but I remember for certain there was at least one 753 to PDX last summer.

320 on SLC-YVR. Not sure when that route last saw mainline.

Unless they slipped a mainline in there since I retired, I would say it was pre-2005, at least, maybe pre-9/11.

What days are you searching these? I'm curious to see what DL might have done out of CMH and when looking MSP up, I find what burnsie28 found, instead:

MSP-CMH 738/ CMH-MSP 320

Speaking of CMH-MSP, it's also operated with DC-9-30s, DC-9-50s, and A320s since the merger.

That stinks about DTW. Usually that is one of the fuller flights out of PHX... Good to see more CR9s on the LAX route as well

Its taking a big capacity cut. I show it as 3x 757 1x 738 now and it goes to 2x 320 2x 738 in june.
It does look like one 738 will be replaced by a 757 in AUG.

I was running through various dates in July. For example, the week of the 8th, the MD90 is consistently the evening departure to MSP from CMH, with the afternoon flight from MSP to CMH a 738. I would assume that 738 continues onto ATL but I havent gotten that far into the timetable yet. I would also expect to see a couple of 739 turns CMH-ATL once they come online... I must sadly say that I think the days of 75s into CMH is probably largely over... especially with UA 739s now showing up on the ORD flights.

Speaking of CMH, with the added AA service to LAX, Delta's somewhat love of the Market and WN having a good foothold, I could see CMH proving to be a very interesting battleground in the next year or two with DL; WN; AA and to a lesser extent UA all battling for share there. Similar story for IND and PIT...

Not trying to be a downer here, but keep in mind that the June schedules aren't even in a finalized form yet, let alone July. DL tends to put out a more-or-less finalized version of the schedule 1-2 months out. And while I realize that the schedule is never truly "finalized", in that there will be last-minute substitutions, there definitely is a lot more volatility this far out, especially between exchangeable equipment types like the 320/M90/738.

Last summer it was 2x A320, 2x 757. DTW-PHX sees a capacity increased during the winter months, particularly during the spring break period. NW and DL have historically always reduced capacity for PHX during the summer months, as it is not the peak season for snowbirds and sun travelers. (Those with second homes typically spend their summers in the north and not in PHX during the summer)

Used to be that DL would put the new schedules into Deltamatic about 45 days out, but that may have had as much to do with coordinating with the printing of the schedule for the system and city timetables as anything.

60 days is pretty final for DL now. Some tweaking is done but the bulk of the schedule is done for the next 60 days. (especially for long haul flying)

Plus Delta's domestic schedule is amazingly more complicated than it use to be. they move airplanes around like crazy now. It seems like ever since Glenn took over network/rev management they really work on putting the right airplane on the right route, at the right, on the right day. One day a flight may be an 88 then a 57 the next then a CR9 the next.
AA and UA don't seem to do this nearly as much as DL. (not saying its a bad thing, but i bet its crazy for those that have to put it in the system and crew management)

Thanks. I was looking in June and found the 738/A320 on MSP.

CMH-ATL shows as 4 M88, 3 738, 1 73G a day, though that 73G seems to be a couple days a week & swapped out with something else (319, M88, M90, 738, 757) other days when it's all said and done (even though CMH-ATL is actually getting double the 73G fun right now).

DL also seems to sometimes throw in a CR9 which leaves either midday or around 6:30pm, too.
