AF / KL is in talks with Airbus trying to delay deliveries of the next A380s on order , by several months :

"Discussions are still in progress with Airbus to define new dates regarding deliveries of the next A380s still on order"

It is actually only AF, because KL didn't order a A380.

Yup, in fact KLM took delivery of PH-AON today and will receive 777-3 PH-BVK this summer. Next year they will receive another A330-300

Well the OP and the link are talking about Air France-KLM the French group, not any specific brand. It happens that the A380s are operated by AF.

But isn't the fleet size actually shrinking this summer (as compared with S12) due to rapid phase out of the MD11 fleet?

I understand that is the case.

From KLM oficial site :

"Fleet
KLM will continue to invest in cleaner, more efficient aircraft to assure customers of optimum service. The medium-range fleet will be adjusted by phasing out the last three Fokker 100s at the start of the winter season. The long-range fleet will welcome a new Boeing 777-300 and the phase-out of the MD-11 will continue.
For further information, please contact KLM Media Relations at +31 (0)20 649 4545."

http://nieuws.klm.com/klm-winterdienstregeling-2012-2013-en/

And by the way, in this KLM oficial site, they also talk about "the Air France - KLM Group" :

"Within an unstable economic environment, the Air France-KLM Group has decided, for the 2012-13 winter season running from 28/10/2012 to 23/03/2013, to stabilize its growth in capacity* compared with winter 2011-12, including +0.5% on long-haul and -0.5% on medium-haul operations.

KLM registers a stable capacity*: +0,4 % on long-haul network and -1,3 % on medium-haul network."

Only AF is delaying deliveries AFAIK, not KL.

Quoting PH-BFA (Reply 2):

Wasn't this the former KC30 demo airplane?

So that will be their 5th A333, didn't realise KL ordered another next to the first 4.

When will the remaining M11's be retired? KL was supposed to get the first of 10 leased 787-9s to replace the MD11's by the end of 2015, maybe these will replace some of the 744 combis?

I'd love to see an A320 in KLM colors.. Maybe someday..

How long ago was this airplane built? Is it any different from any other A332?

Correct.

MSN 925, first flight 18-04-2008, then stored at TLS and now taken up by KLM.

I would have thought taking the A380s would actually save money in the end with lower fuel costs per seat and higher capacity.

The crazy world of airline economics. I doubt I'll ever understand it fully.

You need a positive forecast of cash flow to justify the debt. IMO, AF's situation is simply a reflection of the current EU State of Affairs. Credit AF with the the guts to even ask for this.

So Air France is already at its max capacity for the number of a380s it can put to work profitably. Doesn'that bode ill for the overall economics of the plane and long term order prospects?

I mean at this point in time, I would have thought AF would be considering a new order becauséthe whale was such an unbeatable money maker for them. Not so much apparently.

Well AF is based in France, a country which isn't exactly in an economic boom at the moment !
