Just flashed on Twitter 12:21pm ET ....

American Airlines ‏@AmericanAir 2m: "Our reservation & booking tool Sabre is offline. We're working to resolve as quickly as we can. We apologize for any inconvenience."

EDIT: According to FlyerTalk, AA flights are grounded nationwide. From a posting there" Here at LAX, their system crashed at 8:45 so agents cannot check passengers in and all flights are on hold for departure. Pilot says the problem is system wide."

Another FlyerTalk post: "All computers and self checkin kiosks are down at JFK on AA. If you're on the way, try to get a mobile BP. Luckily I did so earlier and am now in the FL instead of waiting for everything to come back online."

Twitter confirms that all ops are grounded with people stuck in airports on planes.

Not good for anyone flying AA today.

Now lets talk merger impact implications here, now that I've probably seen a "sabre down" thread at least once a month here

Are they going to switch over to US's system?

This can't be good once merger gets working and integrated

No, let's keep this on topic to today's Sabre downtown and keep the merger speculation in the threads it belongs in.

And how is this different from any other airline or large company for that matter? All corporations are prone to system outages unless you are a company that does not use IT systems. Chicken little - the sky is not falling.

Or just an IT breakdown. You can have a systemwide collapse from a horrible mistake.

Why would a hacker attack AA right now, anyway?

I just talked a friend on mine who works for AA at MIA all work has stopped.
No planes have taken off and people are going crazy and no time has been set
to fix it.

Flights are landing but I believe they are going to have to wait till gates open up.

Yeah, but at that point someone is just doing it to do it and not for a real reason, ridiculous or not. If you're going to steal CC data, there are much juicier targets.

If you're giving AA a hard time... why? AA is going through a bankruptcy and merger. Yeah, people may be ticked about the CEO severance issue, but AA is hardly a target I'd find worthy of my time if I were a hacker.

Is it possible? Sure, anything is. I just find it very odd.

Sabre is actually really stable and things like this rarely happen. As for being hacked, just ask United about technology issues. And I'm not trying to poke fun, it's just the most recent outage I can think of off the top of my head.

Somehow they managed to load the passengers on AA 1488 (LAX-MIA) which was due to depart 10 minutes ago (10:55am PT), but according to my friend who is on the flight, the captain just came on and explained the computer outage and said he "hopes" they'll be on their way in an hour. In addition, the captain mentioned they are also waiting for 70 connecting passengers who haven't been able to get to LAX yet for the flight.

Bad luck, bad design, or a combination of both. It has taken down United at least once before because a single cable to a data center was cut and the backup systems didn't work as expected.

Besides, it isn't a total collapse, you can buy tickets online. It seems to be an issue with their airport operations systems.

It is very hard to build a fully redundant system, not only because unless you are willing to take the chance and disconnect a cable, testing is always an approximation of real-world events, and also because despite your best efforts, some factors are totally beyond your control.

I know of a data center that has links to four different providers, with the cables leaving in two opposite directions in case someone digs a hole where they're not supposed to. However, several miles down the road, the cables all come back to the same local exchange. Take it down, whatever the reason, and the data center is off the web...

It is a very common problem with large companies computer systems. It is so complicated to test failover/disaster recovery, they along with auditors do paper test every year and so called auditing companies sign off on it. When there is a real glitch in primary systems standby systems won't kick.

Then I must be living in a movie. If you are in InfoTech outsourcing business, you will be surprised how many customers settle for paper tests. Here are few reasons given to avoid a real test.

1) Systems are too complicated and tightly integrated with other systems. There is no easy way to test everything.
2) It is impossible to get downtime to test. Business user will never agree.
3) Auditors (there are only 4-5 auditing companies in the country) are more than happy to sign off on paper test.
4) If your IT operations are outsourced, provider takes the blame, not you. Most of the service providers also happy to get away with paper test year after year.

I just saw this on the American Airlines FaceBook Page
:

Quoting :
UPDATE as of 3:30pm CDT: Our systems have been fully restored, however we expect continued flight delays and cancellations throughout the remainder of the day. We have made several options available to our customers:

If customers must travel today and are already at the airport, they can rebook on another airline by visiting an American Airlines agent or by going to the other airline’s ticket counter with their electronic ticket number.

If customers must travel today and are not yet at the airport, they can rebook through American Airlines reservations or through another carrier and American will honor the fare difference.

If a customer chooses not to travel today, there will be no charge for reservation changes or a full refund will be provided.

It is important to note we see no evidence that today’s technical outage is related to the tragic events in Boston.

We will continue to provide more information throughout the day as we make progress in resolving this issue. We apologize to our customers and our people for this inconvenience.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out. I'd imagine whatever the reason AA will be keen to keep the problem under wraps. If it is a hack then it will be a chaos style attack rather than stealing card details etc. those hacks tend to go unreported.

There does seem to have been a spate of global hackings recently. WordPress sites have been getting a lot of problems and in the UK the beleaguered Lloyds Banking Group (Bank Of Scotland, Lloyds Bank, TSB, Halifax and a plethora of other financial brands) have been the target of hacks this week.

I know two seperate people totally lost out there abandoned by AA both contacted me sadly i have no advice but to leave the airport and get a hotel this was hours ago. They said it has been hard to get any information and you cant talk to anyone since the lines are so long and the AA system isnt callng them back ever. The holding your place thing isnt working and you cant find an outlet since everyone is trying to call and waiting for hours even in the airport. Pretty much what we would expect but with planes more full than ever its harder to rebook people now.

Unfortunately, the AA staff were in the dark just as much as the passengers today.

I was at IAH today on an IAH-DFW-BHM routing departing Houston at 1:15pm. I got my boarding passes at a kiosk around 11:30am with no issues, but by the time I got to the gate all hell had broken loose. My flight for DFW arrived with the MIA flight shortly before that. Once the aircraft arrived all came to a halt, and no one had a clue. By 2pm the MIA flight had been cancelled, as well as the 2:20pm DFW flight. But since there were no airport systems available we could not get rebooked on another airline. Around 2:15 I made the trek to Terminal B and found a United Customer Service Rep who sold me a ticket on a UA flight to Birmingham. I figured I would at least get out of town and take up my fight with AA to get reimbursed at a later date.

Others were not so lucky, as I don't believe AA was offering any hotel rooms or meals, just rebookings for tomorrow. Me thinks this will turn into a PR nightmare for the folks in Ft. Worth..

Interesting AP article showing how easily these problems can happen --

http://news.yahoo.com/american-expec...ights-return-normal-040246729.html

"Now, if the reservations systems go down, 'most airlines would be pretty much without the ability to fly more than a very limited number of flights,' said Scott Nason, American's former technology chief and now a consultant.

Nason said airlines find and fix the problem, but the next time something else causes an outage. One time, a possum chewed through a cable in Tulsa, Okla., bringing down the whole system. Another time, a worker in the airline's data center used a metal tool instead of an insulated, rubber-coated one — a short-circuit crashed much of the system, he said. "

If thats the case, they need to fire their IT infrastructure team - fully redundant, realtime systems are important at this level of operation, and not hard to do.

Pretty much what we would expect but with planes more full than ever its harder to rebook people now.

My friend was on AA 1488 LAX-MIA. They sat on the plane at the gate for about 2.5 hours before the announcement was made that they really didn't know at that point if the flight would go or be cancelled and that anyone wishing to not risk the cancellation could get off and rebook.

So, I got on my computer and quickly got him one of the few remaining seats out of LAX on DL. He only got to ATL on DL last night (arrived about 11:30pm) and he stayed overnight at the Westin Airport hotel at ATL and just a few minutes ago touched down at MIA on his DL flight from ATL.

AA 1488 did eventually get to MIA, but I (and he) have been burned in the past with these systemwide issues on AA (not computer related, but "other" issues) and it seemed prudent at the time to rebook on DL (he tells me about half the plane got off and tried the same - don't know how many people were able to rebook on another airline to get out of L.A. though).

Now, if the reservations systems go down, 'most airlines would be pretty much without the ability to fly more than a very limited number of flights,' said Scott Nason, American's former technology chief and now a consultant.

Really?  Wow! No one knows how to write a ticket with a pen? We managed to get flights off the gate on-time many times with the res system down. Pax would rather put up with open seating than sit and wait for a printed boarding pass.

Now, if it was weight/balance or dispatch systems that were down, that will ruin your day fairly quickly.

One time we had printed the enroute weather and flight releases way ahead of time, but just before departure, the "backroom" systems went down. It was a good old DC9 and the pilot said, just give me a take-off weight, we'll find the stab setting around V1. The next flight did not go so well.

BOTH of my friends who i mentioned on here earlier are stuck and AA is telling them two and three more days to fly out. AA is offering a refund every chance they get but neither wants that. They both got 1,500 miles ironically are not elites and don't fly often. They are overwhelmed and just want to fly. Neither is at the airport one is at home the other is at a hotel at their own expense. Can they demand another airline? Both said AA told them no other airline and has been awful. Hold times are crazy apparently. I think AA is making alot of people angry and trying to get out of doing what they claim they are doing to help passengers.
