Hi all,

As Lufthansa, Jetstar and Monarch, to name just a few are now receiving new A320s with sharklets does anyone know how many airlines will be retrofitting other buses in their fleets?

I believe older A32X are harder or more costly to retrofit due to wing strengthening but interested if anyone has any information or links to planned retrofits.

It will be great if BA take delivery of their new A320s with sharklets but doubt this will be the case.

Loving the new Monarch sharklets.

JetBlue will retrofit some A320's. They recently ordered 110 sharklet sets.

Spirit has at least one A320 fitted with winglets, though I don't know when or if all their airplanes will get winglets.

The sharklets equipped A320s have a strengthened wing spar. I'm not sure how the retrofit will work for those aircraft built without the new spar. Spirit has one aircraft (N618NK) that has the strengthened spar with no sharklets. I'm sure a retrofit on that frame would be relatively straightforward.

It's a matter of cost, of time for retrofitting, and of course the estimated savings in fuel...

Avianca received a brand new A320 with Sharklets a few weeks ago. It's called "Tiburoncito" (Little shark) among the pilots. I think all frames from now on will come with Sharklets.

Looking at the production list on planespotters, about half of the A320's coming off the production line are fitted with sharklets. The A319 and A321 are still without sharklets (except for the testbeds).

N821JB is the only a/c retrofitted at this point, and will be one of only a few that B6 will do in-house. The rest will have to go to MRO's as they will require the wing re-works.

I know easyJet are going to be receiving all their future A320's with Sharklets and would assume it is only a matter of time before they announce their existing A320's will be retrofitted...

The airline is at the forefront of other fuel saving ideas with their fleet, for example installing lightweight Recaro seats that will knock 600kg off of the aircrafts weight, as well as installing driers to remove moisture from the aircraft and a nano paint layer that reduces drag further on the aircraft.

As the A320's fly the airlines longer routes, (for example TLV, SSH, AMM, etc...) and in a maximum 184 seat config, I would imagine these fuel savings will really benefit!

LX had it's newest A320 (HB-JLT) delivered last month with Sharklets. Still arround ZRH to try catch it for some photos

How about the rest of the fleet produced before that date, do they all need equal amount of rework, or is it different "trances" of aircrafts requiring different level of rework?

Not quite all of them, but yes, most aircraft delivered after that date are sharklet ready. The retrofit is "plug-and-play" and can be done in a day or so.

No, those will need much more rework, as the wing structure has to be modified. I believe the downtime is of several weeks, not sure if it's combinable with a C-check. Since Airbus modified the ancient MSN1 test aircraft for sharklets, I assume all aircraft can theoretically be reworked, up to the airlines to decide if the downtime and cost are worthwhile. I assume the oldest frames will not be modified, and simply be put to fly the short-haul routes while newer sharklet-aircraft fly the longer ones. For frames with a lot of life still left in them, the rework may be worthwhile.

A buddy of mine sent me a photo on a Cebu Pacific A320 with sharklets. That's an airline I haven't seen anyone talk about in regards to sharklets in any forum.

As someone pointed out VA took delivery of their first 320 with winglets. I saw it take off from DFW on Saturday evening, but it was too late to get a decent picture. Could only manage an amateur video. It was N361VA. I can't find that reg here, but there are some shots of this bird in the database before it was registered for delivery if only I can find those.

It was reported that Spirit's ship 619 was seen with winglets this weekend as well.

Didn't realize JetBlue was retrofitting. Interesting times. Will be nice to see Boeing's Max style winglets in action!
