Despite opposition from Israeli airline and labor unions, on Sunday Israel ratified the open-skies agreement it had reached with the European Union last year.

Under the agreement, EU carriers will see the lifting of route and frequency restrictions which often led to carriers using their largest models to Israel. Likewise, Israeli carriers will gain new broader access to European markets.

Its hoped the new agreement that will go into effect with the IATA Summer 2014 schedule period commencing April 2014, will help boost inbound tourism along with lowering of airfares.

There are plenty of Friday and Saturday flights into and out of Tel Aviv just not by El-Al

That, I believe, only applies (or applied ?) to LY operations. AFAIK all other airlines have been operating into Israel on Saturdays for a long time.

Any Open Skies type deal has my full support. It opens up choices for us, travellers, and rids of artificial barriers.

I imagine there will be a considerable expansion of EZY flights to TLV - I remember us discussing this topic here a couple of years ago and concluding that EZY would expand when their limitation to UK-TLV only was removed.
I wonder if HFA will get more (some) service - there's probably an opportunity for HFA to be positioned as a small scale LCC airport.

Foreign carriers are free to operate to Israel on shabbat.

The passengers might find things a bit eerily quiet as things like public transport are mostly not available, and many stores and some restaurants close as well, especially the further you get outside cosmopolitan central Tel Aviv.

Imo - a nice way to appreciate some peach and quiet in a busy world.

Yep.
I would like to see LY in CGN again. But there are already flights by AB, 4U and X3 to TLV.

More flights from all over Europe into Israel by foreign airlines will follow.

I just saw that both Haifa and Eliat airports are not international, at least that's what Wikipedia says. Could we see them become international now when there will be more flights in and out of Israel?

Haifa is only an hours away from Tel Aviv, it could be used as a lowcost airport.

Not with a 4,324-foot runway. Of course, a lot of infrastructure would need to be developed.

I think it'd be TLV for a long time, and I remember FR's deputy CEO saying “Israel has phenomenal potential"*. This isn't unsurprising given the large VFR potential, which by its nature is ordinarily price-sensitive, and holiday potential - easily stimulated by price - in certain locations. I recall Ovda (VDA) being used by charters in the past, so perhaps this will be explored by LCCs.

Given the Ryanair utilisation requirements expect places in Poland Budapest and perhaps Marseilles .
I would not expect the UK or Eire as they just to long segment lengths for Ryanair.

However easyJet will almost certainly add capacity

Wizzair are also likely to enter the market from Eastern European points

Don't think Haifa meets the requirements for international operations and the runway limitations at Eliat are well known.
Hopefully some return of charters (reduced in recent years in favour of Taba cross the border) to Ovda may happen in summer 2014

Didn't they already announce the launch of Budapest-Tel Aviv flights?


I wonder if Ryanair might launch flights from Paphos. The market is not that small and the flight would be only 30 minutes.

Isn't it being phased in gradually over several years? That was mentioned in a few news items.

I remember reading not long ago that FR wanted to start up to 40 routes from TLV.

I can see Ryanair flying from Israel to the UK... they do some flights from TFS or LPA to Scotland and Denmark that are roughly the same distance. In addition to their large bases (STN, CRL, GRO, CIA, BGY, NRN...), Ryanair is basically the only one that can find a niche serving secondary markets with no regular competition (KRK, BLQ, PSA, VLC...).

I am sure Easyjet is likely have (if any) a more conservative expansion, focusing in major markets (outside UK/Swizertland already served): CDG, FCO, MXP or SXF.

Its starts in April 2014 and runs through 2017.

Basically each year most European destination will be allowed to have 7 additional weekly flights by each sides carriers. A small number of central European airports however were excluded and only see increases of 3 weekly flights added each year by each side.

Also under the agreement, it provide exemption from the antitrust law and eliminate some notification requirement of Israeli carriers to engage in code-sharing agreements via Europe to other open skies nations.

Wizz is already flying Budapest - TelAviv and will also open as of June 15 Bucharest - Tel Aviv three times per week.
