^^^I can see it now. While you're in the lavatory with 15A, I buy the entire plane a round with your IFE

Has anything changed? You've always been able to message other people in Red. Did it previously allow you to buy drinks for another seat without having to speak to a flight attendant? It used to be you would buy multiple drinks and when they came, you could tell the FA who to give the second glass of wine to.

Or you can be really cheap and send someone a coke and see if that gets you an invitation to the lavatory.

That would be quite fine with me, since you'd need to use your own card to do so. 15A plus a free drink sounds like a successful business model.

Now, in reality, what happens on VX is this: the fat guy in front of you has 4 beers (own IFE, own card), then audibly farts in your face when he returns from the bathroom. The woman across the aisle from you holds her shirt over her mouth, such is the odor. When you get up to go to the bathroom, you return to find that the woman next to you has spilled her entire drink on your seat and your book (which you are halfway through). She says not a word of apology.

Those incidents happened about 20 minutes apart on the same VX flight I took earlier this month. So, I'm happy that at least I'll be able to buy 15A a drink now. Maybe if they added NZ's SkyCouch product, they'd have something fun happening.

One of the comments under the article has a good point...

What if you buy a drink for someone whose spouse/significant other is seated somewhere else (due to late scheduling of flight, for example) or you're just too dumb to realize that their spouse/SO is seated next to the person?

So we've had Hooters Air.

We've even had nudist airlines/flights in Europe!

Now we have this from Virgin.

What will be next?

How about an airline called Swing Air!

21+ couples only. Plenty of in-flight condom and lube dispensers. Add in some nice rubber couches and a well-stocked drink bar and you might have the best way to spend a long flight!

Then you'd probably end up with a lot more videos like this one...

Except probably a lot racier.

I feel sorry for the poor guy who has to clean the airplane after each flight.

I was thinking the exact same thing!!

I can just picture a lot of situations that could and very will unfold; some husky protective husband sees that the DJ from HOT Radio, or whatever, has bought his stunning wife a drink. Do you think he will just sit tight? I don't think so. At the very least, he'll go have a chat with him. Are you saying things will not get ugly? :-S

Am I being devil's advocate here, maybe but I dont think so. I can see this being a huge problem. But like a lot of airline concepts, a very good hearted idea, just not necessarily a sound one.

My 2 cents

On the other hand, do I actually see this service being widely used? No, I don't. It will depend on the cities being served. Not everyone wants to "hook up" and not everyone is a bachelor or single. I'd say a sized portion are business, family, personal travellers.

When the service is used, (see above post), Yes, I do see problems arising.

My "now phased out"

I had many many many long transatlantic flights as a single, and as a silly kid, I always wished some cute girl sitting next to me.

Thanks to all of the wonderful airlines I flew with, they managed to match me with the most annoying passengers you can find at 32.000 feet. Instead of sending a drink, why they don't make a system where they seat singles together. ( of course two singles who are willing to be seated next to a single)

also I remembered a case where a friend of mine received a poem during a flight, she was really touched, then she rushed for her connecting flight without even meeting the guy, but with the capability to call each other on IFE systems today, if messaging available from seat to seat, it would be a good way to bother the cute passenger on the same flight,

anyway I don't fly as a single any more, and hopefully never will but for the next generation good luck with high flying flirting,

And one last thing, as IBOAviator mentioned, fights during a flight will increase as jealous boyfriends will have problem with random guys sending drinks to their girlfriends

My last time traveling, I ended up meeting this gorgeous girl from Italy on my JFK-ATL flight. Turns out she was an exchange student from Italy staying in Atlanta for now. Disappointed she wasn't staying in NY. Anyways, I'm horrible with girls, very shy around them. The best thing I was able to do was show her how to get to the baggage claim in ATL (I went with her). She was thankful, I said good-bye, and made my way back to my connecting flight to DAB.

Sometimes, you get lucky enough to sit near (maybe not next to) someone who catches your eye.

It's no different than buying someone a drink at the bar. If you're too unobservant to notice a ring, that's your fault, but if they aren't wearing one, then they either give you a polite "Thanks, but no thanks" or not and you find out later in a horribly awkward way.

I dont really think this will be a problem.

There's a reason I get a sore neck from flying, and it's not the head-rest! Its from craning around every few minutes trying to make eye contact! This approach has met with limited success!

In the age where dating websites are the norm and we have entire resorts for people to have casual 'relations', this move should not offend. Time to book a flight on Virgin!
