Hi Guys, fairly new here, but joined up to join the conversation! Hello everyone!

I was just browsing twitter and noticed the judges at thedesignair.net announced their top 10 liveries for 2013.

http://thedesignair.net/2013/05/07/t...esignair-top-10-liveries-for-2013/

10. Air Tahiti Nui
09. Porter Airlines
08. Island Air
07. Thai
06. FastJet
05. Starflyer
04. Asiana
03. O'hana
02. Hawaiian Airlines
01. Fiji Airways

I agree with most of them but it's interesting to see most of them are pacific based airlines. Does this mean that the rest of the world's liveries are becoming more bland? With recently Avianca ...

New Livery For Avianca (by KarelXWB May 3 2013 in Civil Aviation)

... producing a fairly rubbish livery (IMHO) I can't help but feel the best liveries are fast departing... Is it that airlines no longer feel it is important to invest in their liveries?

What is your favourite livery? Who is still getting it right?

Nick.

Asiana?? Really??? Seriously????

I am happy to see Fiji Airways right there where it belongs but I would also add the following:

- Air Seychelles
- Air Madagascar

KC Sim
Singapore

Garuda Indonesia has got a pretty nice livery out-there. Would say the same for the traditional Cathay Pacific, Saudi Arabian and current Aeroflot livery, they should clearly be in the list.
The new AR livery is a failed attempt to-make-it-better, looks almost like low-cost colour-scheme, disappointing (but still better than the likes of TK, AF and others).

On a side note, i would rate Iran Air as having the best Cargo livery:

I agree with the top ten, though I think that Air Tahiti Nui should be number one. Its nice to think that while many large airlines (such as Avianca) seem to be making their liveries more dull, some of the smaller ones like Fiji Aiways, O'hana, Island Air and FastJet are moving in the right direction.

How can they forget Air India and Etihad? I know AI as a company may not be good, but they have the best look liveries out there!
So does Etihad. Fantastic Airline, and a brilliant livery on the aircraft.

Such a ranking is almost pointless given the inherent subjectivity of liveries. And, of course, fundamental national bias.

Fiji Airways' livery is really not that spectacular, IMHO. I mean, it's nice, but I can think of a few that are better, in my own opinion, of course namely:

LAN
Air Malta
Aeroflot
Air Seychelles
Caribbean Airlines
Kulula

And for those that are no longer with us:

bmi
TWA
Northwest
The old United
South African Airways' old "Flying Springbok" scheme.

Not true, I quite like it.
I just hate how the cheatlines/stripes don't wrap around the cockpit.
It breaks the look.

Now, if they were to bring back that retro looking B742 livery they had...

Not the old 1960s orange and silver livery. IMHO that was an excellent, but simple livery.

I think most of you are missing the point...

a lot of these liveries (but certainly not all) easily connect the airline to the location they hail from.

Air Tahiti Nui, Fiji, & Hawaiian are probably the best examples of this

I concur with the rest that Porter is a very strange choice. I see nothing super there

Half the other ones mentioned are just some nice colored paint thrown on a fuselage with some writing.

Aer Lingus, as mentioned above, probably would have been a good choice too. I AGREE

Simplicity is what I love in airline liveries.

Coming from me this probably sounds like a biased statement, but dare I bring Southwest into this conversation? If not for the fact that people are just probably so jaded from seeing it so often, I really feel like Southwest's canyon blue and red is one of the most bold standard liveries flying. And they certainly have most airlines beat when it comes to the special liveries. Before you laugh it off, honestly try to imagine seeing the Southwest livery for the first time in your life and how does it compare to the ones listed above?

As everyone says everyone has different tastes in life, I don't believe these are the top 10 liveries in the world, for me out of 100 airline liveries I would just put these 10 liveries in the middle of it, to me it sounds more as a restricted based poll than a general view/taste of a large sample of people.
For me I would group them on this order

1.TAAG
2.KLM
3.ROYAL JORDANIAN AIRLINES
4.ANA
5.ETIHAD
6.QATAR
7.KOREAN AIR
8.BIMAN ( Newest livery on their 773 )
9.THAI
10.AVIANCA ( Current livery 2007-2013 )
11.AIR SEYCHELLES
12.AIR MADAGASCAR
13.OMAN AIR
14.CATHAY PACIFIC
15.SRI LANKAN
17.JET AIRWAYS

These are just my personal taste.

As everyone says everyone has different tastes in life, I don't believe these are the top 10 liveries in the world, for me out of 100 airline liveries I would just put these 10 liveries in the middle of it, to me it sounds more as a restricted based poll than a general view/taste of a large sample of people.
For me I would group them on this order

1.TAAG
2.KLM
3.ROYAL JORDANIAN AIRLINES
4.ANA
5.ETIHAD
6.QATAR
7.KOREAN AIR
8.BIMAN ( Newest livery on their 773 )
9.THAI
10.AVIANCA ( Current livery 2007-2013 )
11.AIR SEYCHELLES
12.AIR MADAGASCAR
13.OMAN AIR
14.CATHAY PACIFIC
15.SRI LANKAN
17.JET AIRWAYS

Good list. How about AS?

I know a lot of folks dislike Soutwest's livery, but I have to say they have one of the most widely recognized brand and scheme in the US. Most carriers (besides AA) have migrated toward white fuselages slabbed with a logo, while WN's aircraft can be easily identified even when they are at cruising altitude. Love the bold colors and simplicity to their scheme. Just my opinion.

Hmm, the only I really like on that list is Fastjet. Most other are ok, but they wouldn't be on my own top 10 list. Porter is absolutely hidious!

I am just curious, what are the criterion for such point of choosing? Worked with marketing and branding myself, apart from the colour fusions and graphic execution, there are more pointers to be factored in for such rankings. I would like to know from designers.net how they put the list together so we can consider with objectivity the imposing title of tope 10 for 2013. cheers all!

I'd think AA's new livery goes under this criteria.

I've seen so many liveries of airlines I haven't even heard of it's making my head spin.

Not being biased here towards the US, but can we narrow down the criteria to airlines that fly to the USA? This will unfortunately boot out some Saab flying in the Gobi Desert coated in interesting colors, but it'll involve more carriers that most of us are accustomed to hearing of.

By my new criteria of airlines flying to the USA here's my top 10:

1) Air Tahiti Nui
2) Frontier
3) Korean (especially the A380)
4) Hawaiian
5) Air India (might be ugly on the inside, but quite attractive from the exterior).
6) Avianca
7) LAN
8) Southwest (Canyon Blue)
9) Qantas (Just love the Kangaroo!)
10) British Airways (Can't get over the Union Jack on the tail, despite the rest of the somewhat bland white).

I know this doesn't count as an actual airline, but the Skyteam alliance livery looks gorgeous IMO.
Especially on the B77W..

Wow, It seems everyone has a different opinion? Just shows that design is such a Subjective matter.

The only thing that I question is that everyone just says "This is my favourite livery…" without explaining why... Whilst good design is down to aesthetics hasn't it also got to be quantifiable? I like thedesignair judges list because there is some reasoning behind their decisions...

Personally my favourite livery has to be Oman Air's, because the tail section, whilst looking great, represents Frankensence, a luxurious, beautiful export of the country, much like the airline is trying to be.

Indeed. But do people really need to explain why? Not everyone is going to be able to say:

I much prefer LAN's livery due to its use of contrasting colours, textures along the tail and its use of line along the fuselage. The light blue streak along the top of the fuselage creates a good leading line towards the nose, which could represent a the start of a journey.

Not everybody knows the art elements and principles, and not everybody is going to be able to understand a certain airline's design choices, like why FastJet has a African Grey on its tail of why EgyptAir has a man on it's tail. (When I was younger I used to think it was a fox. No idea why...).

Actually, it's the Horus, an ancient Egyptian deity, a man with the head of a falcon, the so called "Sky god"

My point exactly! Most people have no idea what the liveries are supposed to mean. As long as they're aesthetically pleasing, then what else are they supposed to do?

From the design background I come from, Logos identity and brand image are all meant to connect with a user on an emotional level, to generate a feeling that can be associated with. Egyptair for example gently reinforces it's cultural roots whilst being aesthetically pleasing, Aer Lingus has the shamrock on it, a national symbol and colour.

On the other hand, other liveries that people like, like Jet2 for example, say absolutely nothing emotionally about the airline, it's treated purely as an advertisement for the airline. ANA doesn't really have any logical reasoning behind it that I can see either.

As we all know on here, from watching it for the past couple of years, people build an emotional attachment for an airline, they actually protect it from people that speak badly about it. (even if they can't justify their reasoning) I think this is partly due to the emotional attachment that the brand can create.

BOAC on the Comet 1 specifically... and BOAC on the Super VC10! Singapore Airlines on Concorde looked pretty damned cool too. Also always loved the Air Florida livery and Eastern too of course, and the TAA livery in the early 1980s.

I would exclude the final Pan Am "billboard" livery. I always that was overkill and didn't enhance the lines of the aircraft.

Too true. Take NZ, most people (well, just about everyone not from New Zealand) would assume they have a random squiggle on the tail.

Instead, it invokes the Koru, which to the Maori people represents "peace, tranquility, personal growth, positive change and awakening" (source: http://www.shopenzed.com/maori-desig...-spiritual-meaning-xidc13209.html)

In terms of brands which clearly represent the country and culture that the airline is from, then kudos should go to FJ, HA, Ohana, EI, and (IMHO) NZ and QF. While BA and AA do make it pretty clear where they're from, slapping a tag on the tail isn't quite a subtle as a Ohana or Fiji, or even a green shamrock or kangaroo.

I'm really surprised that no one has nominated AY yet
