China Southern CEO says, the carrier plans to utilize its 787 fleet on key domestic routes such as Guangzhou-Beijing and Guangzhou-Shanghai along with international services such as Guangzhou-London and Guangzhou-Vancouver.

Carrier expects to receive 8 787's this year, with 2 additional deliveries in 2014.

Who's going to be filling the first and business class cabin on domestic routes? Is there high demand for full flat seats to Shanghai and Beijing?

Do they have first class? I can't remember CZ proposing their cabin configuration.

I guess the domestic flights are some kind of tests.

According to a press release from CZ in 2012, the 787 are supposed to have F Class product.

Fully-flat 'Deluxe First Class' seats featuring 78 inch pitch

And yes I agree, they are likely a waste for domestic runs, the same way CZ was forced to use the A380 on domestic hops.

Or is it possible that CZ will test fly the 787 on domestic routes, like many other airlines do?

Sure there might be some experience building, but with 8 787s due this year, if they run LHR and YVR which lets say take up 2 frames each, they would still have 4 frames still left over.

China Southern is also rumoured to be starting YYZ in the next batch of new destinations after this one. It also could be that AC is adding service and someone has gotten the carrier wrong. Time will tell.

CZ's certainly been aggressive in introducing new aircraft types into its fleet. 380's, 787's, and 77W's, how are they going to make money with little brand recognition on the international routes.

The answer to your 4 frames is provided in the opening statement of your thread.

' key dometic routes SUCH AS Guangzhou-Beijing and Guangzhou-Shanghai, along with international services SUCH AS Guangzhou-London and Guangzhou-Vancouver'.

What the CZ CEO is saying is that in addition to CAN-PEK & CAN-PVG and CAN-LHR & CAN-YVR, CZ will operate the B787 on routes SUCH AS:
- PEK-PVG
- PEK-CTU
- PVG-CTU
- CAN-AMS
- CAN-CDG
- CAN-MEL
- PEK-AMS

and possibly many more.............

Seems like waste to utilize a premium 3-class aircraft optimized for longhaul missions on domestic China ops.

CZ has growing A330 fleet which seems much more appropriate for such applications.

It needs some short hops to better utilize the aircrafts.

There are some rumors about CAN-JFK and CAN-FRA using 787. They may also replace some 330 on the Australian routes.

Sadly, the load factor of business class in domestic routes is better than international routes for CZ.
