Now it's official. China Southern announced that they will use A380 on CAN-SYD route from Oct. 27. It will be CZ's 2nd long-haul A380 route after CAN-LAX. A380 will replace current A333 on the daily CZ325/326 service.

CZ325 CAN=SYD 2105-0830 Daily A380
CZ326 SYD=CAN 0950-1730 Daily A380

G'day

How are the connections at CAN with the flights to/from LAX ? In other words what are the chances of this becoming a viable alternative route for people flying from Australia to the US and vice versa.

Any comparative pricing available yet?

Cheers

Peter

Looking at their current schedule, there is a 3-4 hr layover in CAN in either direction. Pricing is running ~ 2,400 USD RT MAY-DEC.

It's 4 hrs layover on SYD-LAX and 3 hrs on LAX-SYD. Besides, I check the expedia. The price for May, June and July is around $1600 roundtrip include tax and fees.

For example:

^^ 26 hours vs 14 hours? For around the same price?

Umm, no thanks.

I agree. KE made a bit of a marketing push for Aus-ICN-USA last year and that pretty much fizzled out.

Flying via Asia can be a good deal if going to the East Coast, but LAX/SFO/YVR are just out of the question for anyone except those looking for the absolute lowest price.

Yeah...it's just an option...Now there is little passenger flow for the Europe bound, let alone the US bound. The primary market for CZ's Oceania route is still Chinese domestic passengers. The EU or US bound is just a plus.

Wonder what their fares policies will be on the kangaroo route once the 787/A380 will be deployed on LHR-CAN-SYD.

I got the info from CZ website ( usually higher than Travelocity Orbitz etc). Also, I was getting quotes during December. Traditionally the High Season.

LAX-CAN-SYD is pretty inefficient regarding distance flown vs. LAX-SYD. That would be like flying FRA-LAX-JFK when one needs FRA-JFK.

It's not a record, Ek's turn around at Manchester is only 1 hour.

Pretty funny CZ tries to sell LAX-SYD via CAN.

Obviously CZ does not care about IATA rules as the routing is far beyond the maximum permitted miles between the cities and requires supplemental fare.

Shows how desperate CZ is trying to generate any and all revenues regardless of how loss making it might be to fill the A380s.

If China would not have that stupid "one airline one route " policy CZ could already had deployed the whalejet at CDG.

Those IATA "rules" are now meaningless and have been for ages, and they had little relevance except to interline journeys where a carrier that sold an interline fare that exceeded the MPM (maximum permitted mileage, meaning 120% of the shortest operated mileage) would probably face prorate/billing disputes from the other carriers involved. Online routings like the one being discussed are entirely up to the carrier. If a carrier wants to carry someone from JFK to LHR via HKG there's nothing to prevent it.

Well it's not just CZ. KE, OZ, JL, CX, even SQ can be faired for Australia-USA

According to CZ's CFO, it sounds like the SYD A380 service is more an act of not knowing what to do with the aircraft and hoping for the best versus having a true strategy for the aircraft.

With the Air China talks not bearing fruit, the airline will begin a trial A380 service on the Guangzhou-Sydney run in the second half of the year, the executive said.

"We don't want to go head to head with Air China on European routes, and therefore we've decided to give the Sydney market a trial with the A380," said Mr. Xu. The airline already flies to Sydney on smaller aircraft.

"If demand for flights on the Guangzhou-Sydney route turns out to be weaker than expected, we could probably try to restart talks with Air China," he said. China Southern, which also flies to London from Guangzhou, wants to become a major player on the so-called "Kangaroo route," shuttling passengers between Australia and the U.K.

since when? CA/MU both do PVG/CDG, PVG/FRA, PVG/SYD.

The A380 certainly separates the men from the boys, when it comes to earning money from this aircraft.

Same happened with the original 747 (I'm old), the only difference then, was there were more airlines with cash and/or friendly bankers, so more could indulge their egos and buy a flagship.

Will be interesting to see.

Yep, CA are allowed to cherry pick some nice routes out of PVG, but MU and CZ aren't allowed access to PEK. CA has the government's ear and often gets what it wants.

Thanks a lot for that info; it is helpful in understanding more about the dynamics of the big three carriers in China. How come CZ calls PEK its second hub if it is so limited there by bureaucracy and the CA lobby?
