Was on HF 8918. Declared mayday with a great sense of urgency in his voice. Immediate descent from FL350 to FL200 and a phone patch with New York ATC which I couldn't hear due to terrible HF conditions. Is being handed off to VHF 126.02 in a few mins, don't know which centre that is. Aircraft is B752 N200UU.

edit: typo

FL200 140 degree radial, 265 miles from Wilmington, alternate Charlotte. We are now going to go direct to Charlotte. Change now to centre on 126.02.

If they chose CLT it must be something manageable. ILM is right on the coast and a half hour or more closer.

It's tracking now it's back under radar coverage. Was in the WATRS area before where there's no radar coverage and flightaware just fills in the blanks with estimated positions which are rarely correct in my experience. You should see it pop up on the tracking sites now.

Flightaware estimates position based on planned route of flight in transoceanic sectors. It isn't using radar data therefore is not a reliable source until its back inside an enroute centers control.

For this purpose flightradar24 is better, getting live radar info, and over the atlantic from FAA

I tried filtering out some of the noise but still can't make much out unfortunately.

FWIW flightview.com says the plane was flying from PHL to AUA, and diverted to CLT and is 19 minutes out of CLT as of this writing.

Do you think this flight chose CLT because of AWE operations there? Or some other basis for choice? Seems to me, from where they turned right, they would have had a large number of choices, several closer than CLT...

Looks to be doing fine, on final now and seconds from touchdown. Any word on what the emergency is?

This is probably the most dramatic thread I've read on JUB - thanks to the factual, non-hysterical posts.

Congrats to the posters.

I tried to access the atc voice but I got a message saying "Access denied due to network abuse." I have never accessed the site in my life! How could I have abused it?

Are you home or maybe on a shared network ? Do you have a static IP ?

Same happened to me, but I'm on a flight right now. Just go through the main liveatc.net page, type in 8918 in the full site search, and find the appropriate link (towards the bottom), and navigate to the archive from there.

Cheers,
Cameron

What radar? Wasn't it outside any radar coverage area?

Correct. As far as I know both sites receive the exact same data from the FAA ASDI feed so neither site will be better than the other.

According to USAirways, flight left 2 hours late from PHL and diverted due to maintenance. Obviously something that they thought was fixed wasnt.

Or... more likely that it was a secondary, unrelated issue. Airlines don't just "think" something is fixed, and captains dont just accept aircraft "assuming" its good to go.

Last time I was down there the flight back to CLT canceled due to MTX and they had to put on an extra section the next day.

Quoting qualitydr (Reply 13):

Yes, it will be much easier to repair or swap out the aircraft there as well as a new crew and get the passengers on their way.

I went back and re-read this thread to see where any of this aforementioned drama was- search came up empty.

I sometimes get the feeling that there are people who hang around waiting for threads like this so that they can chide and dismiss anyone who has the nerve to speculate or (gasp) discuss it on a discussion board (isn't that the entire purpose of a website like this?). It wouldn't surprise me if these are the same people who chide and dismiss PAX that had the gall to tell journalists/reporters that they were frightened if some sort of in-flight incident took place on their plane.

I was one of the controllers who worked this flight into Charlotte, from around ILM to Charlotte Approach. We were only told it was a fuel issue, and they wanted direct but didn't necessarily request equipment on the ground. Pilot didn't sound like there was a sense of urgency in his voice.

Thanks for sharing that. Always good to get news from a direct source, which happens all too infrequently these days (here and in "the news" in general).

I agree, except for the title, the post was very drama free, straight forward and informational. Since I didn't see this until 12+ hours after the opening post, the 'just squawked mayday' was not accurate. Otherwise and excellent post!

Cheers!

It's much better to say 'May 25' than 'today'. Equally 'just declared mayday' means little without giving the time and date.

Silly argument imho. When I made the original post it had just happened, hence "just declared mayday". Anyone with sense would be able to see that a thread with 30+ replies is no longer going to be something that "just happened". Of course it is much easier to complain to mods about my choice of thread title rather than apply some common sense, but whatever.

(SA7700 no problem here with you changing to title to appease certain individuals).

And these same people usually are the ones who know nothing about how aircraft operate or any kind knowledge of aircraft systems. If someone with the knowledge tries to comment, they are shot down. And to tell you the truth, I don't look at speculation the same way, it could just be an educated guess about what went wrong. And unless they are trying to portray that as fact I don't see anything wrong with it. But this is just the a.net way. It seems like people feel they get points for pointing out errors or things they personally don't like.

I noticed they descended to FL220. Curious: if there's a potential fuel issue and you're out over the Atlantic, don't you want to maintain a nice high altitude so you have more options in the event the engines quit?

Is there any new information about this flight?

A person on another board claiming to be a passenger on this flight has hinted or suggested that the pilot was forced by management to accept this plane that he was concerned about.
