Ran into this picture on Reddit's r/avaition. Looks like an a330 or 340 went into a gate that was too small for its wingspan, colliding into the mobile lounge and destroying the winglet.

Anybody have more information?

Yikes!! How could be happen? They didn't measure before for the first time aircraft type into YUL. Maybe first time gate for A330. I don't know.

And it's the newest 330 LX has....Delivery April 15th this year.
Some unfortunate events for the newer aircraft in the fleet of LX. The sharklet 320 (HB-JLT) did also recieve new sharklets already due to double lightning strike........

Somehow it seems this happening more and more often. Perhaps due to the fact that more wide bodies are in use today. It also very confusing for pilots as for controllers to know which type of a/c is allowed to use which taxiway. Alone in FRA there are several restrictions for differant a/c types where to turn and where not.

This one looks bad- i guess it isn´t going to fixed with a bit of tape?

The mobile people mover-thing seems to be parked correctly though, judging by the red markings on the ground in the first picture.

In the end it is not always quite clear who is at fault - was the pilot advised/cleared to proceed along this taxiway- was the Taxiway charted as not suitable for more than x-ft´ wingspan? Was there a follow-me ahead? Was the people mover supposed to be there? Was the a/c on the centreline?
Anyhow I´d hate to have to make the call home and tell my boss I´ve slightly scratched the paintjob on the wing...
That´s if he isn´t a A.netter and has already seen the pics!!

Sure but you have to consider height as well. Had most any other airport vehicle been parked in the same spot it wouldn't have been an issue. Basically if the airport was setup to allow that size plane to dock at that gate and for the vehicle to be in that spot then its a big mess up on the part of the airport planners.

Perhaps the people that park that mobile lounge got it wrong and left it extended?

Poor Swiss A330!! Such a beautiful new aircraft... the winglet looks in bad shape!
Wonder how they managed that??

I hope it will be fixed and the a/c will soon be returned to service.

You can see from the pictures that the gate lounges are supposed to be docked in that area. As the airplane was taxiing I wonder if the pilots for any reason were off center or a controller sent the airplane on a restricted taxiway by mistake.

It's hard to tell but I'm going to wager the aircraft shouldn't have been on that taxiway. The wingtip is well over the taxiway perimeter line (which I know is normal) but the proximity to the lounge vehicle and the protuding area of the building seems very tight. In the second pictures the taxiway looks very narrow.

Yeah the damage to the leading edge & slats is quite bad. Will that require a structural check to the rest of the wing given the stresses and potential to have damaged internal components?

Looks like most of the debris on the ground is from the vehicle.

Wow! that is some serious damage to the wing as well as the winglet. Will take some time to get fixed. Does AC have Airbus mechanics in YUL?

I guess the airport controller sent them down the wrong taxiway, as it looks like both the aircraft and mobile lounge was in their correct position.

Which day was this? I was at YUL on Thursday the 6th and remember hearing a final boarding call for the Swiss flight to ZRH. If it was that day then this would suggest it happened on departure...

That does look bad. Good thing this didn't happen to an A380 . . . then by now the pilots would have been generously flamed for
• racing on taxiways through congested ramps;
• that the captain would be primarily responsible for not hitting anything;
• crew should be able to clearly see the wingtips, so really they had no idea just how wide their airplane is.
Did this happen in clear daylight?

And for the record, the above was of ironic intention, for those that did not understand that; I'm not pointing blame to the crew here whatsoever. I am curious though to the sequence of events that led to the lining up of ALL the Swiss Cheese holes.

Would there not be wing walkers while the aircraft is in motion so close to any gate?

What are the circumstances that dictate the necessity of wing walkers? Or the circumstances that negate the need for them?

Sad seeing a new plane damaged so early in its like (or at any time in its life).. We should make more use of remotely placed cameras and proximity warning indicators I guess.. bring car technology to aircraft.

This is not the case. This is the only taxiway leaving this particular ramp area. A330s taxi through there everyday. This "alley" has 3 taxiway centerlines, two for which 737s/A320 sized a/c can taxi past each other opposite direction. The third centerline is in the middle of the two, so widebody/heavy a/c can taxi through oneway. My guess is they followed the wrong centerline (one intended for smaller a/c).

Does Swiss not use wing walkers? This could have been prevented by the ground grew signaling the pilots to stop before it had gone this far. But I know policies and procedures are different for every airline.

Yes Swiss uses wing walkers. The aircraft was leaving the ramp area taxiing under its own power.

What is a wing walker? Do they walk with the aircraft while taxiing? Here in Zurich this is unknown.

Wing walkers walk the tips of the wings on push back and can single to the tug driver that they might be about to hit something kind of what it sounds like. Once under own power the tug will leave and wing walkers will go with tug back to gate.

They arent at all common on this side of the pond, but used at nearly every flight in the USA/Canada from what I understand.

How do you think SWISS will handle this incident? They're already short of long-haul a/c...
Will TLV/CAI flights be downgraded to A320/321?

Anyone know if the terminal has changed in that area ?

I have been looking at the charts from a couple of vendors around gate 60/61. The vary on what they show, and google maps shows something different again.

I am thinking about this question as well. The charts end at gate 60/61, but the picture in the first link shows the sign of gate 62.

This is completely irrelevant but why are the flaps retracted slightly? Don't most pilots put these up after they land.

Some chart vendors have notes saying the aircraft must be on the centre taxi lane in the NW hold area, which is not where this happened.

I thought this only works on the 737 because of it's low proximity to the ground? The 330/340 is much taller...& I think has slides all the way to the ground? Correct me if I'm wrong.
