Was at the MKE spotting area today around 5:30- 6pm. As I pulled in, I saw a US A319 and a WN 737 parked next to each other:

While pondering this.... I turned around and saw some lights coming in...... and what should I see.... but the first of 3 weather related diversions into MKE (while I was there anyway):

- A United 757

Followed closely by-
- Delta 757

And followed by-
-United 737-900

Just as I was getting ready to leave.... the radio started telling all ground fire units to stand by for a code red...... a Delta 757 with hydraulic failure..... I turned my engine off, but kept the radio on...... I walked out and stood next to the fence...... and before long.... the 757 arrived.

It landed just fine, and after they landed, ATC closed the runway so they could check the runway for hydraulic fluid. It was at this time that I had to leave.... but I was happy that another emergency had a happy ending! And this was also my 1st time seeing a 737-900ER!

I heard about the Delta flight on the news but did not know we were getting weather diversions as well. Luck you and good pic's too! I think UA will be doing more diversions to MKE now that they have the E Concourse to themselves and have all those jetways to use.

Stupid news people called it an MD-90!

Does this look like an MD-90 to you?

Nice pics! Glad everything ended well! Also glad nothing happened to the plane because that would almost certainly be a write off and we don't need to start losig 757s from the world any faster than we already are!

LOL! Gotta love the news.

Yes, every 757 needs to be appreciated and preserved as best as possible, wonderful and classic birds.

I'm going to be uploading a few of these pics and I'm also going to spend more time down there. Boy was I on cloud nine yesterday! I'm gonna be keeping an eye on the Chicago weather as well, that way I can tell if we'll be getting more coming in!

Second time this week we have had Chicago diversions for weather. Earlier in the week I saw an A340 on approach. Certainly not something you see at MKE everyday!

The news article changed to say "757 aircraft!" I wonder if when the news crew was looking at the DL timetable when it happened, because according to the timetable I downloaded from Delta's website, it was supposed to be an MD-90. But based on the news footage, looks like the aircraft involved was N660DL:

I'm always bummed for the folks who get to "visit" MKE under these circumstances... sitting on the tarmac twiddling their thumbs for an hour.

Are there any circumstances where people are allowed to just deplane at a diversion? Send a few busses up from ORD? Does that ever happen? It's been so common lately you'd think providing the option would be appreciated, esp for people who live close enough to not want to bother continuing with the flight...

This isn't exactly the scenario you mentioned, but my cousin was on a CLE-MDW flight a few weeks ago that diverted to SDF. There were some passengers who's final destination was SDF that were allowed to deplane in SDF.

I may be wrong, but I think they may do that for domestic flights. I've always seen the international flights park and wait on the northwest side of the airport.

I would assume that no international passengers would be allowed to deplane.

Would there be a time limit though that say if the aircraft had to sit overnight that they would be cleared customs in MKE?

I'm just wondering (probably the same question as above).....but when these International planes (KLM, etc.) divert to MKE...... could they go to the IAB, have the passengers clear customs then get back on the plane, that way when they get to ORD (or wherever) they've already cleared customs and the passengers can connect to whatever flights they are going to without being delayed by the extra time going through customs for a 2nd time in ORD and possibly missing their connections?

International diversions have cleared customs in MKE before. KLM last year for example, the plane went mechanical on the ground in MKE and had to offload here. Customs is not 24/7 in MKE and everything needs to be prearranged. The IAB is set up inside to handle 737 aircraft loads, not widebodies. It does not take much to fill the whole building with people and bags. After KLM pax cleared customs they were bussed down to ORD. As for clearing customs then getting back on the plane it is not possible. All those passengers would have to clear customs, get bussed to the main terminal and rescreened before they reboard. By the time they did all that they would be down in ORD already. Luckily that KLM was a combi so a lot less passengers. Everyone worked together to get that flight off loaded (DL borrowed FX equipment to get the containers out of the aircraft)

Some screen grabs I got from the news story showing the registration and the plane parked at the gate:

looking forward to seeing the 757-300 parked at the gate when I fly out of MKE on 7/20. (And yes I will be doing a trip report on it!)

I was on a DL flight yesterday from DTW - SFO that was on the taxi way heading to take off when the engines were shut down because of a passing thunder storm. Ended up twiddling our thumbs as you said for just over 1 hour and then endured a LONG wait to take off. A 3 hour connection I had in SFO became a 30min connection with a run between terminals to be one of the last to board the NZ flight back home

And just to clarify my comment on seeing the 757-300 in July 20th. I am NOT taking it unfortunately. I'm going to Barcelona to catch a cruise with my family. Here's my routing:

MKE-ATL: DL 764 (MD-90)
ATL-BCN: DL 114 (A330-300)- my first ever transatlantic flight and first ever A330 flight.
