I was perusing some options tonight for a fall trip to Phoenix and noticed that United is putting the 738 on DSM-DEN starting on Aug. 28 - the first regularly scheduled PMCO metal to come through since the merger.

Here's a sample Sunday schedule in October.

DSM-DEN
6:17-7:05 AM 738
9:41-10:32 AM CRJ
1:13-2:02 PM CR7
5:04-6:01 PM ER4
6:50-7:41 PM 738

DENDSM
10:02-12:38 PM CR7
12:40-3:18 PM CRJ
3:26-6:02 PM 738
8:41-11:17 PM 738

Of course, DSM-ORD is sticking to the emphasis on frequency over capacity and looks to be a variety of CRJ, CR7 and ER4s.

United has used the 737-800 a few times this year on flights from Denver and Chicago.

IAH too, but only as one-offs. This seems to replace the A319/A320 for at least a few months (The Airbus shows up again on the schedule in November, but it looks to combo with the Boeing at that point).

It will be nice to get photos of something other than an Airbus.

UA used to send 757's to DSM.

Nice to see these back. UA has certainly placed the emphasis on competing with WN to Chicago. AA Connection also has several daily ORD-DSM flights. It would be nice to see year around mainline on PHX-DSM.

I'm surprised that US Airways doesn't have year round mainline service between PHX and DSM. I heard Delta in September will be replacing the MD-88 with the A319 or A320.

Is the ER4 in that schedule coming from ORD onward to DEN?

They still do a couple of times a year, but not on a regular basis.

Especially to prevent a possible WN entry into this route. I still think it's a matter of when, not if WN will fly DSM-PHX.

2013 is looking to be another record year for DSM enplanements.

Same way with ROC , we used to get A319/20's to ORD,now it is 73G/738/739 depending on the day of the week. But the Star Alliance desktop shows the Airbi coming back in the fall.

Wouldn't be surprised if US goes mainline to PHX year round soon - US has really increased their DSM presence this year. Until summer 2012 we only had a few CRJ/CR9 per day to PHX, but now we're up to seasonal mainline on that route, plus daily ERJ-170 to DCA and CR9 to CLT.

Haven't swung through DSM in a few years, but nice to see the mainline additions, that's for sure. How is gate space these days? Pretty cramped?

Do they fly the 738 somewhere else or is the Monday morning departure later? I'm looking at the 11:17 p.m. arrival into DSM and the 6:17 a.m. departure and thinking that's too short for a layover.

Perhaps a little off track, but I remember when America West Express was flying a CRJ-200 in there and people were shocked at the stage length! This was in 98-99 or so.

Hopefully US Airways could send a A319 from CLT to DSM... Amazing to think the CLT-DSM route started with a CRJ 200 and now it's two CRJ 900s. From what I've heard the CLT-DSM route is doing pretty well! Wells Fargo has some presence in the DSM area and obviously CLT is huge for Wells Fargo..

It is a fairly long stage length for a CR2, that's for sure. HP also ran a red-eye LAS-DSM on the CR2 back in the LAS hub days.

Not only that, It went from two CRJ-200s quickly to two CRJ-700's, and now to two CRJ-900's.

UA will also be changing from a once daily 319, sometimes 320, to a 738 at FSD on the FSDDEN route in September. I personally would much rather work a 319/320 below wing than a 738...but cannot complain about the additional seats!

There is some space for expanded frequencies, especially since A2 and A4 (SW & Allegiant) don't have the best usage, and A5 (ground level only) is not being used, except for maybe a UA RON. The UA IAH and EWR flights still operate out of C. The rest of the C gates can be busy at times.

Just to be clear, Wells Fargo has a HUGE presence in the Des Moines area - Wells Fargo Home Mortgage is based in West Des Moines. I believe they are the largest private employer in the Des Moines/West Des Moines MSA, with more than 13,000 local employees.

Probably a 30 hour (or so) layover ... two nights.

Yes, I would say likely. AA added the MD-80s to DFW a while back, and US keeps upgrading CLT. They both seem willing to throw more seats in the market. If AA/US didn't fly it, G4 would probably do DSM-IWA or WN DSM-PHX.

It will be interesting to see if G4 maintains the same frequencies on DSM-LAS once WN starts daily service at the end of September. It's been a long time station that's been fairly strong for G4. There may be enough traffic depending on how much of the WN traffic is connecting.

I think PHX is one of the top destinations out of central Iowa. I would look to WN to add it at some point, especially if they dominate G4 on DSM-LAS after they start it in Sept (which I think we all assume is pretty likely - current DSM-LAS roundtrips on WN a few months out are like $200-$250).

On the FA side we call those (depending on if you were NW or DL BM [before merger-lol]) an "illegal" or a "lean over." Often called a "continuous duty" or "stand-up" or "nap line" or "high-speed" trip. One duty period with a "long-ish" break but not legal rest.

It appears F9 is dropping the Saturday flight into DSM from DEN effective September 14 and through the rest of the schedule period. This would have been scheduled quite some time ago however.
