But an angled floor like an A330. A 764F would have required a modified nose gear like the A330F.

Not sure what you mean by "split into smaller screens". Those are simply 3 large LCD displays and you can choose many different display choices (as is shown in the artists rendering in the AWST blog article). Those are large screens, not the small screens. This is a major display upgrade.

A real possibility, IMHO. They have 200+ a/c that will need to be replaced (A300/A310, DC-10 & eventually the MD-11's), and I think the 763F will be a nice replacement for the A300/310, and DC-10's.

Considering the deal Boeing can probably give FX on new build 767's, since the plane long ago paid for itself and the fact that new passenger orders are almost nonexistent now, I think a 100+ fleet is very realistic

I think ROC is a prime candidate to downgrade from MD10 to either A306 or 767 (I'm aware one of the daily flights is already an A306). I'm at this moment looking at some strong evidence of the possibility.

I'm aware we are somewhat hijacking this thread into ROC-centric but...
To put it lightly the MD10 is too much capacity for the route. The A300 probably bulked out a few times and it was deemed more worthwhile to put too much vs too little capacity on the route. Thankfully the 767 volume-wise falls right in between the two and as such I believe ROC is the perfect market for the 767. I could get into more detail but it would probably be violating proprietary information rules.

The plan is no winglets. As it stands now, a B763F will fit perfectly into any widebody gate. Adding winglets that goes out the window, and you would have to redraw the ramps to handle a wingletted B767.

Same reason you havent seen B757Ws at FDX.

Wouldn't the significant fuel savings for such a (soon to be) large fleet of 757s and 767s warrant the investment into winglets and redrawing the ramps? They are going to be in the fleet for a long time to come, so it seems like it would at least be considered...if not now, then in the future?

Simply moving from 727s to 757s already resulted in a massive redrawing of the ramps at the hubs. If you have to now redraw widebody gates, FX will lose a finite number of gates at the hubs which will negatively affect the whole operation.

While fuel is a large expenditure for FX, it is far from the largest, and the 767s will generally be flying legs of three hours or less anyways.

Would FX have to repaint the lines? After a quick measurement on Google Earth of MEM, IND, OAK, and EWR, it looks like the widebody hardstands mostly measure around 180 feet between the lines, more than enough for the MD-11's 170 feet 10 inch wingspan. Winglets increase the wingspan of the 767 to 167 feet.

Quoting dispatchguy (Reply 55):
Same reason you havent seen B757Ws at FDX.

I thought it was because there is a reduction in payload for the 757s with winglets? A 767 with winglets receive a 3300lb increase in MZFW in order to maintain payload.

Then once you add a safety margin, now the airplane is wider than an MD11, hence the redraw.

Primary was the ramps, the loss of MZFW was, from what I understand, a secondary issue.

At FX aircraft generally bulk out volume-wise long before they approach payload weight capacity. I could see that not being much of a concern at all.

Winglets are much less worthwhile on short average stage lengths. Multiply that by low hours per day utilization. They may not pay for themselves even if they did have room on the ramp.

This buy is about durability, good efficiency and reliability. FX is like a railroad. These 767s will fly till 2040+. Quite different from passenger carriers who are more likely to go for the 787.

N101FE had its first flight yesterday to BFI.

I looked at Flightaware but was confused with the several B763 flights out of PAE, some with Grant County as destination and one Grant County to BFI. Could someone post the Flightaware segment(s) for N101FE. I think it is interesting to follow and keep track of the FedEx test flights.

Quoting Flighty (Reply 63):
Multiply that by low hours per day utilization.

Low hourly utilization of the FedEx fleet is in the class of an urban myth. I would imagine from my past experience that the daily utilization will be similar to pax B763s used domestically.

It depends on stage length. For instance, a 767 routed to the west coast from MEM, doing the standard two turns per day, will be in the air for something like 12+ hours per 24 hour period.

On a route with short stage length the aircraft might fly only 4 hours per day. Passenger planes just won't do that - they'll have another route fit in that time space.

Due to the cycling of aircraft through the system, on average, each plane will end up with fewer cycles than a comparable passenger plane.

During production flights Boeing uses the "block number" for the call sign, in this case BOE556. Most B-1 flights go to KMWH and back but in this case the FED is going into flight test so it landed at BFI.

Interesting - why the need to go to flight test?

Probably enough differences between it and other freighters that the amount of certification flights will require it to go into the flight test inventory at BFI vs the production inventory out of PAE. Will probably show up with an experimental number on its next flight. When is it due for delivery?
