Just heard AA has pulled all flights for the day, why are they making this choice so early? The airport is having problems this morning but to pull the day already seems a bit much, anyone at American that can help me understand what your thinking?

Noon would make a lot more sense, just heard from our OPS group that they pulled out for the day and that usually good info.

It may be that getting station employees and crews on layovers into the airport may be very difficult.

I remember back in 1987, Chicago got a huge downpour, and the main access to ORD (I-190) was flooded. It also closed the CTA line into ORD. So, passengers and airline employees could not get to ORD.

AA may have decided it was better to cancel flights, rather than have problems with lack of flight crews and agents/ground crew, as well as passengers trying to get to the airport.

as of 1130am, the 120p flt (2296) is still operating. The 555pm flight was cancelled but has been reinstated with an extra section (9218) at the same time.

And having aircraft stuck in PHL, too.

We were in South Philly for a dinner out, and we actually traveled back to Downingtown via I-95 and US 322. Parts of I-95 were actually blocked off (lane closures) due to ponding of water. That was right at the PHL interchange, too, by the way.

I heard this morning that the airport picked up a record-setting 8 inches of rain! I think AA was wishing they had a fleet of sea planes and amphibious vehicles for the grounds crews to use...

I noticed they were landing over the Comm Berry Bridge-side of the air field; didn't notice any flights taking off...

For the record, that was one hell of a rain that fell yesterday evening...

I hadn't thought of that. About 15 or 20 years ago, I think Reno, NV had a severe flood. I remember seeing a photo of an AA 757 with water at the bottom of the engine cowlings. That probably wasn't the best things for the brakes.

I don't know how bad things were at PHL, but you definitely want the aircraft away from airports with heavy rains or heavy snow, so they don't get stuck there for extended periods of time.

A USA Today article says it's due to electrical problems affecting Terminal A - East. So it's more operational than direct weather avoidance. Flights from ORD have operated, and now one is about to depart DFW.

I am sure it has something to do with Kate Hanni and her three hour rule! It's got to be a reason why there are many more flight cancellations these days.

There was no power in all of A-east from around 5pm Sunday until 945am Monday. The tunnels to bag claim were flooded and did not reopen until today. Inbound flights on Sunday were not able to park and people movers had to be used. Us air would not lend a gate either as they had their own issues. Bags were unloaded in the dark and passengers trying to claim them waited at the dark counter while every available employee from agents to managers to ramp and PrimeFlight read out names from tags with flashlights. On Sunday morning employees were trying to check people in with iPhones. This got one eagle flight out because they could use the built in stairs. The airport said that they couldn't board an MD80 this way because the pax would be too close to the alleyway. Once power was restored everything ran mostly smooth just with a reduced schedule.
