Polet Airlines says its looking to acquire A330 freighter aircraft as replacement for its IL-96-400T fleet which was only acquired in 2009.

Anatly Karpov, Polot's president says while the company has had "good experience" with its 4 IL-96 aircraft, but cannot operate them profitably on cargo flights to places like China due to the models high fuel burn.

He says the company sees the A330 as fitting its future needs providing 30-40% fuel burn cost reduction.

Very logical statement... 4 engine plane for a mission that a 2 engine new generation plane can do is not suitable in the long run, maybe when they started operation they got a bargain to buy that Il-96 but i don´t think they have any future with them any more.

Let´s see if they can get some money out of them, because i don´t see any use of that 4 planes the moment they retire them.

Slightly off topic but I haven't seen it reported anywhere on here, they want A320's or 737's too.

Didn't SU have IL-96TF's on order as well for their cargo division ? But I presume with them now not even operating MD-11F's anymore, that order has been cancelled.

Aren't these the planes to be converted from freight to pax for Cubana?

Mon dieu what an terribly inefficient plane this must be to burn 30-40 pct more.

Even if purchase price was free, you are building a mountain of operating cost compared to someone like A330.

The A330 cannot lift the payload of the IL-96T

Yes but how much of the IL-96 payload capability is really used?

Polet website says maximum is 92ton but the range is shortish at 4700km.

The A330 payload is up to 72tons, and has 5900km range with that per Airbus.

Unless cargo is very dense, they likely cube out faster than they weigh out.

So A330 might be able to do similar mission indeed at lower cost at end of day.

How about the 777F? It can lift more and go farther than the A330F.

I'm sure the cost to do that would be through the roof and not worth the effort. Its much harder to go cargo to pax then pax to cargo.

IMHO the 777F would be the right replacement for the IL-96 400T regarding payload and range.

Exactly.

I guess Polet is not using the entire 92 ton capacity because as you say they Il-96 fills up before then and therefore a A330 makes a lot more sense in terms of fuel cost and flexibility.

I think so but again, they would have to really load the aircraft up with freight and passengers to use it efficiently - I love the IL-96 and found the Il-86 a genuine laugh but I feel very sorry for countries that cannot buy Boeing/Airbus because of either an embargo by the US or, as is more likely nowadays, being ruled by a weirdo who would buy anything as longs as it wasn't American.

This seems like a wise transition. They used the IL-96 to start service and now will grow the A330F.

Quoting LAXintl (Thread starter):

Wow... that is a 12% to 20% reduction in cost. It will make currently un-viable routes profitable. That's more than the lease costs on the A330 and they also bring a substantial maintenance cost reduction as well as a tremendous improvement in turn time. (Russian aircraft were never built for fast turn times due to internal customs.)

Quoting LAXintl (Reply 8):

Quite lower cost and better performance at range. And quads are costly, due to the maintenance, on shorter missions.

Lightsaber
