I was driving by the airport a couple of times today (KSJC), and noticed two ANA 787s parked. One was at the international gate, the other was on the ramp north of terminal A. The latter was in a spot where you'd expect an aircraft to be if it were out of service for maintenance, but I didn't see it just a half hour earlier when I passed by (was going down the freeway, could have missed it).

Anyone know the story?

You were slightly off.

You saw an ANA 787 and a ANA 773.

ANA 8 (773) NRT -- SFO diverted.

Was the ANA 773 diversion due to weather (does anyone know?)
The weather's been muggy thanks to a tropical storm in Mexico.
Apparently, we had two JAL 787s on the ground in SAN today.
Yesterday's flight from NRT was 10 hours late, and left this
morning today's flight from NRT also arrived. I have been hoping
it was only weather diversions and not more problems with the 787.

Ah, OK. My view was from the freeway, and of the rear of the aircraft. I saw the rectangular shape at the APU, and thought maybe 777, but couldn't remember if the 787 has a similar shape. I also wondered that, if it was a 777, it must be a diversion, but why to SJC?

1) SJC is an ANA destination, OAK is not
2) SJC is much closer for the inevitable repositioning flight than LAX, and by ATC miles, OAK.

Why would ANA go to a different airport if its good enough at SJC, do you have a different airport they might have gone too?

The 777 has a rectangular screwdriver tailcone. The 787's is cone shaped.

I'm curious why they diverted in the first place. I don't think it was that foggy at SFO, was it?

Interesting. After the OZ accident at SFO, I noted that no international flight diverted to SJC. All went to OAK, SMF or farther destinations. NH had already landed at SFO so didn't divert. I had wondered if NH's SFO flight would go to SJC since they are the only overseas carrier that serves SJC and obviously has their own staff there.

I think this answers that question. NH would send their SFO flight to SJC if a diversion is necessary.

I cant say for certain as I don't have any first hand knowledge of the Diversion, I am not from the SFO area, nor can I find the SFO metars. bit from my experiences in the San francisco area, Fog can be very localized and move in or out very quickly. there was a period around 6-8 am local where the airport was IFR and the airport looks to have been marginal (in this case ceilings at 1000 feet) until 10 am. Those weather conditions translates to an arrival rate of 45-25 aircraft an hour, as compared to 60 on a clear day. As we speak there is an 2 hour delay for arriving aircraft.

it may have been NH's day to take the delay/diversion

arrival rate information can be found at http://www.fly.faa.gov/ois/

make sure to look at west directory and click into SFO and be cognizant of the weather minimum for each set of numbers.

It was around 11am that I saw the 777 parked. Perhaps it was still foggy, or the delays had rippled along to cause this diversion.

So that's why I saw a JAL 787 taking off at SAN when I was boarding my WN flight at 10a today. Thought it was awfully early for it to be leaving.

I would suggest that the subject of this thread be changed.

Per JAL:

August 27 JAL66 Tokyo (Narita) - San Diego

"During flight, slat system which is installed on the leading edge of the main wing and increases the lift at takeoff or landing by extending failed, so it was decided to return to Tokyo (Narita) for the maintenance activities. JAL66 was re-departed on the next day by another Boeing 787."

So it turned back and they sent another 787 in it's place. It was sort of
confusing seeing it on Flightaware. I was hoping it wasn't more glitches in
the 787s.
