So far we have the following either active or planned UA 787 routes:

LAX-
NRT, PVG

SEA-
NRT

DEN-
NRT

SFO-
KIX, CTU

IAH-
LOS

How many frames are required to support those flights? All 11 of the original CO 787-8 order should be delivered by Summer '14. The 787-9s start delivery in 2015, additional 787-8s (sUA order) starting in 2016 and the 787-10s starting in 2017.

Makes sense because they have ANA with 787s in that region which aids in maintenance if necessary.

787-10s starting in 2017.

That sounds optimistic. 2018 is what I have read.

A theoretical routing for next summer as of now could be:

IAH-DEN-NRT-SEA-NRT-LAX-PVG-LAX-NRT-DEN-IAH-LOS-IAH-SFO-KIX-SFO-CTU-SFO-IAH

By my count this should require 10 787s which I believe is how many they'll have by next summer. So this is probably gonna be it for 787 routes next summer unless something changes.

A 787 would have to placed on the IAH-SFO_IAH route that would be the only way for UA to route the 787 to/from IAH which is the for now is the sole 787's home base.

I just wish we knew the total number of 787's UA will have on hand once SFO-KIX and SFO-CTU flights go live with the 787.

They already have 7. One more rolled off FAL a couple weeks ago but has not flown yet and on more will enter FAL by December. They are scheduled to have 8 this year but that will be 9 by early next year. The thread starter says they will have 11 by summer and that sounds very reasonable.

I wonder what this might say about SEA's potential as a DL Asia hub, since DL has zero 787's.

I count 10 as well, but am counting this way realizing there will be swaps at SFO, LAX and IAH. Assume a morning IAH-SFO and pm SFO-IAH added. Pretty sure this would need 11 units to provide a spare.

1.) SFO-CTU (3 days a week, one day sits in SFO all day)
2.) NRT-SEA
3.) SFO-KIX
4, 5 & 6.) LAX-NRT/PVG (LAX ground time 1650 to next day at 1120 - could be an IAH turn added)
7 & 8.) IAH-DEN-NRT-DEN-IAH
9 & 10.) IAH-SFO-IAH-LOS-IAH (2 days aircraft sits in IAH as IAH-LOS 5/week)

This doesn't give much down time.
SFO 24 hour layover once a week on CTU aircraft
LAX 18 hours daily
IAH 14 hours daily RON
IAH 4 hours 5 days a week, 28 hour hours 2 days per week
LOS 8 hours 5 days a week
CTU 15 hours 3 days per week

I was wondering the same today, but I guess the advantage that SEA has is that those routes are within the range of the 767 which means that DL has less need for the 787 @ SEA than UA does @ SFO/LAX/DEN.

All that said, from an outsiders perspective, if DL is serious about increasing NRT overflights and penetrating Asia deeper from the Lower 48 then the 787 would seem like the obvious bit of kit to have.

Currently there are 7 aircrafts in service:
> LAX-NRT-LAX-PVG-LAX requires 3 aircrafts
> IAH-DEN-NRT-DEN-IAH-LOS-IAH requires 3 aircrafts
> 1 aircraft currently acting as a "spare"
(note there are swaps happening in NRT on inbound/outbound frames from LAX/DEN)

N27908 will be delivered in October and be placed on SEA-NRT-SEA effective Nov 5 which requires 1 aircraft (with swaps in NRT if/when needed) therefore also leaving 1 aircraft as a "spare".

N26909 will be delivered in December with no route announced for January as of yet (keep an eye out for this one).

N26910 will be delivered in March 2014 and be placed on a IAH-SFO-KIX-SFO-IAH rotation that will require 2 aircraft. The unknown is whether the 2nd aircraft will be current "spare" one, N26909 or whether one of the current routes will be dropped.

Aircraft #11 (registration TBD) will happen in Q2 2014 and be used on the SFO-CTU route in a pattern with KIX and domestic flights to/from IAH.

Cheers
A

The same aircraft aren't going to be used on the same routes everyday they will be routed throughout the system. So 908 isn't gonna do SEA - NRT - SEA all the time nor is 910 gonna do IAH - SFO - KIX - SFO - IAH all the time.

It's a waste of the 787's range capabilities. UA has perfectly good 763s that have the range to do IAH-LHR, which is not a long and thin route.

UA next year will have what, like 11 787 frames total? That's not nearly enough to go around for the other hubs to see them. Although ORD fans will have the 744 back, so there's that.

Seems that EWR will continue to see a lot of 767 and 757 TATL traffic. Other than the occasional turn to IAH, I don't foresee any 787 routes coming online there until the large variants are delivered.

This is a rough schedule, based on a previous article I read in Airways (right before the new updated order with the 10s were announced)

The last of the 11 sCO 787-8s will be delievered in 2014
The 787-9s will start delivery in 2015 (perhaps late '14) not sure
The next batch of 787-8s from the sUA order in 2016
The 787-10 starting in 2018
The A350-1000 starting in 2018

A bit off topic if UA is now scheduled to take delivery of the 787-9's in 2015 is AA the North American launch customer for the 787-9? I ask because there are conflicting reports online that suggest that UA might take delivery of a 787-9 late in 2014 which is why my post up above asked if any one new for sure how many 787's UA is scheduled to take delivery of in 2014 if it is only 8's or perhaps some 9's as well?

I would be really concerned about that. I have heard from UA employees that 787 dispatch reliability has not been too good so far and any flight to China faces ATC problems from their military so the ripple effect could be disastrous if scheduled so tightly.

Again, 11 isn't many at all. You have to figure that 5 762s are gone and that impacts the system as well.

It's been said the 787-9 won't arrive until 2018. I don't know where you got '15 from..

Times have changed
Anyway, AMS is still awaiting it's first 787 operator.I hope we don't have to wait on KLM.
