Hello all

Recently looking into the LA flight from MAD to FRA and noticed it has been zeroed out untill the beginning of next year.
I was aware that LA wasn't operating the FRA-tag until end september, but does this mean by any kind that LAN is planning on axing the route completly (meaning the MAD-FRA tag).

Greetings
Marc

LA is in FRA daily (flying a 767) and is actually planning to switch to a daily Dreamliner (I think starting in October). Are you sure your sources are right?

The MAD-FRA leg will be axed in the time being until the adequate 787 replacement arrives.

LAN recently resumed daily service to FRA with the B-767-316ERs and plans to deploy the 787-8 on the route in the coming months.

Acoording to LANs website, Kayak, Skyscanner;.. It's impossible to book the MAD-FRA-MAD segments for at least the complete W13-14.

Any Idea when the 788's will arrive?

They already have 788s so a more accurate question might be when will the get put on the the FRA route.

I'm surprised LAN continue with this now they own TAM. It would appear to make more sense to send PAX to GRU then put them on TAM direct to FRA?

I've never understood why they'd operate this once they had the IB codeshare, and later JJ metal in FRA.

There was a HBS case study on LAN from a few years ago and it specifically highlighted the reason for the MAD-FRA tag being cargo. LAN planned (or still plans) its network based on RTKs, including both PAX and cargo revenue. The added cargo benefit and few additional passengers supposedly justified the tag as a result. I could see this as being the case pre-2008, but with the continued erosion in air cargo demand and percipitously high oil prices, it became clear that the route would never recover.

And the fact that going on forward, LAN intends to fly to Europe using GRU as the hub. Why make the MAD-FRA tag when LAN Brasil, Oops did I just say that?, I meant TAM is flying GRU-FRA non stop with the 77W.

So no more CC- Lan mental in Europe other than in Madrid as of Oct.1.

I just don't see how the marginal cargo/pax revenue covers the cost of the flight when they have dedicated cargo service and now nonstop JJ service. It makes no sense.

Repeating myself: LAN has an SCL centric view of its network. LAN Chile comes first. SCL comes first. TAM is a second rate subsidiary.  Silly

Actually, lately it's all about LIM...

Seems more it is all about GRU. Customers with FRA flights probably will have two choices: IB thru MAD, JJ thru GRU.

And i doubt MAD-FRA will return.

A shame... it was a great way to travel between FRA and MAD for "insiders" who knew about it. Significantly cheaper than competing IB / LH flights, with widebody comfort. The only small drawback was arriving at the satellite terminal in MAD. But admittedly, the flight had poor loads, and I guess cargo isn't everything...

I suspect the type of cargo such as fruit, vegetables and seafood is time and weather sensititve so keeping it in one plane straight thru may be more beneficial than having to move containers around from one plane to another. Just my guess tho, but the EU is Chile's 3rd largest export market after the U.S. and China.

Check again. LAN will continue to operate daily service between SCL and FRA via MAD. The 787s will be deployed on the SCL-MAD-FRA route during October.

Instead of sending pax through to SCL-GRU-FRA, maybe LANTAM's long term plan is to send SCL/GRU/LIM all over to MAD, then use it as a scissor hub to FRA ?

if that's the case, GRU-FRA would be a prime candidate to down gauge.

Biggest issue now is that instead of GRU airline with a SCL subsidiary, they're running it as a SCL airline with a GRU subsidiary.

I have been saying this all along. In a merged LANTAM covering most of Latin America, SCL should not be more relevant than BSB when it comes to long-haul.
