Hi Fly Malta Ltd. has applied with the DOT for authority to commence services from its home base Malta to New York JFK.

While no specific schedule, or start up date is provided, carrier seeks to utilize its single A340-600 9H-SEA on the route.

Wasnt there a short lived attempt in the past ?Bulgarian. At the height of the travel boom on a smaller more appropriate aircraft. Can't see this lasting on a huge aircraft like that unless its once a week

Why oh why??? Does this airline have money to burn?!

Air Malta have tried services with a 757 in the past, when the economic climate was better and this never worked. At last Air Malta used a more ideal sized aircraft and could offer onward connections.

I love Malta as a country and a place to visit, but the market is so small it simply cannot support a route like this. The Islanders are only one stop away from most of the worlds major destinations, with connections via London, Frankurt, Paris, etc...

I honestly don't know what to say. I know there is a Maltese population on Long Island, granted there aren't a huge number of them. I could see this working MAYBE twice weekly if the price is right.

They should have tried one stop thru a city in Europe at least.

Seems unbelieveable that they could make this work profitably. How much demand could there even be to NYC from Malta? Maybe a seasonal summer only service if they were trying to boost tourism and got large incentives to boost tourism. Still NYC is so far it seems like a real long shot and an expensive gamble.

According to MIDT the market is tiny, not even 30 people/day on average, though I suppose it peaks strongly in the summer.

One thought I had, is there a Mediterranean cruise ship link that HiFly is pursuing with this flying?

I know many moons ago (in the mid 1990s) there were charters from Malta to NY by likes of ATA. Even SQ operated a few using 747s.

HiFly is a leasing company. They operate Arik Air flights which serve JFK. They also operate for other airlines in an emergency such as the recent Norwegian flights to JFK. I am sure this application is just a regulatory formality.

Your post is a bit confusing. They are an airline not a leasing company (a la ILFC). THey specialise in providing aircraft on wet lease to other airlines (arik), governments (Belgium air force/UK Government) etc.

Who knows what the application is in relation to. The 346 that is with the Malta airline, rather than the parent company based in Portugal, is ex VS and appears, from their website, still to have the VS cabin installed.

That's interesting. Are there any in New Jersey? I was wondering why they picked JFK instead of EWR, but if it's because there's a Maltese population on Long Island and none in NJ, that would answer the question.

There was a brief 767-200ER service SOF-MLA-JFK and JFK-MLA-SOF in the mid-1990s, operated by Balkan Bulgarian airlines and it was in codeshare with Air Malta, it ended because Balkan had to return the 767-200ER (ex-AF) to the lessor and it was placed on new lease with El-Al.

I'm curious to see whom HiFly plans to fly for but suspect it will be once or twice a week and probably codesharing/connecting on KM flights to Libya (TIP, BEN), Sicily (CTA, PMO) / Southern Italy (REG), Cyprus (LCA) and a couple of other Mediterranean destinations... it might be worth a try.

will only work if Hi-Fly offers cheap connections to europe. choose somewhere else besides JFK, JFK is so congested.

They're not an airline, as they don't (currently) operate any flights in their own right. They are, as you point out, an ACMI specialist (which, for all intents and purposes, may as well be a leasing company).

That would be my guess too althought Hi-Fly Malta is already flying to JFK, for Norwegian. The A346 that has been operating for Norwegian is from the Malta based subsidiary. But I would be shocked if this application is nothing more than a formality. The only possibility of a flight between JFK and Malta would be a one-off charter, possibly for a cruise group, hence why they didn't post an intended schedule or start date in the application.

No. This application is for stand-alone scheduled service between Malta and the US.

HiFly anyhow does not operate under its own authority for its sub-service flying but instead operates under the name and authority of its client airlines.

This submission is for schedule service between the nations under its own name.
