Air Canada (& Air Canada Regional) cuts an additional 5,000 jobs coming to a total of 9,000. Hopes are that these employees will be rehired when the economy improves.

In addition to that they will cut its overall flight schedule by 20 percent meaning that 84 aircraft be eliminated from its total fleet.

Any idea what aircrafts will be eliminated and from what hubs?

All DC9 and B737 will be eliminated from mainline, all jets (F28 and BAe 146) will be eliminated from ACR.

I'm not suprised Ac will be getting rid of the F28's and Bae146, but they'll have to get a replacement aircraft for these planes (ie CRJ 700). Many of these jet routes would have difficulty operating on a Dash 8, including the Q-400, and have to low of demand for a DC-9. The entire Western regional scene would be crazy if this happened. I suspect the Bae146's will go, but the F28's will linger around for some time to come.

On topic of the F28's, Air Canada's press release reads "will be grounded on an accelerated basis" which suggests to me that they will retire them more quickly than originally planned but not necessarily all immediately.

I don't think that the 146s are going, they just renewed their leases recently and are relatively efficient aircraft. Also 17 DC-9s + 38 737s + 19 F28s + 1 744= 75 aircraft. ACR has I think 10 146s meaning this would equal more than 84 aircraft. I think the remaining eliminations are a few more 762 domestics and maybe a couple ex-CP 763s. As well, up to 20 of the 737s will be headed for AC Lite, if it ever gets off the ground.

My, mistake. I read the press release are the 146s are gone. They will probably be the last of the group to go though.

Hey all,

As I said in another post, the DC-9 fleet will be "parked", the F-28's will be permanently grounded, the 10 146's will be temporarily parked and 18 of the 737's will go to the discount carrier. The rest of the 737 fleet will be "parked".
This was the announcement today from our manager at YYT.
The BAe 146's will eventually come back, but for now they are going to sit.
This I think is partly because of the maintenance problems at Air Nova. The 146's are maintenance nightmares, and QK maintenance are having problems with union negotiations.
No new orders are being made right now. The a/c that are on order will still come to the fleet. We are going to have to get financially strong again before these older a/c are replaced.

Yow-- they will probably be the last of the group to go though

I agree, they burn fuel at like DC-9 rates but apart from that they're not that expensive to operate or turn around. The F28s I guess must be getting up there, just regarding maintenance costs alone.

I assume the 737 numbers do not include the 3 leased to Canadian North, nor the 1 leased to First Air.

AC_B777 since after Oct 14, 4 of the 5 YOW-YHZ flights are suppose to be 146s, what will be used in their place? I would assume 319/320s, but likely cutting frequency down to 4x.

AC B777 --The 146s are maintenance nightmares

Compared to CRJs, yes I can sure imagine, but.. I thought some of the problems (like the early Lycoming engines) have sort of been worked out now, with the newer 146 derivatives like the AvroRJs in service. Are the Air Nova's 146s more expensive maintenance-wise than the F28s serving out West, for instance?

While the F28's are going, along with the DC-9/732 fleets, I don't think we'll hear anything about new aircraft replacements for AC and ACR until AC and the economy gets financially healthy again. That might might be as long as 2-5 years. But I thought the 146's will stay on even if they're temporarily grounded.

Robert Milton was very specific when he was talking about the F28s and 146's during his press release on CBC this morning and they are to be grounded, all of them.Don't hold your breath for replacement a/c either(and that means Q400s or anything like it). I can guarantee you, you WILL be riding on Dash8's between YYC-YQR,YXE,YVR-YXS,YXT,YPR and as for YYZ, it'll be the same.

Gee, I'll really miss those F-28's (uh-huh). They were so nice to fly in (groan).......In fact, in an attempt to recreate flying in one of them, I'm going to put on a Motorhead CD, turn it up to 11, and run a few vacuum cleaners at the same time.

I'm sorry, did you say something?

Hey,

YOW- yeah, I assume that we will put A319's/320's on that route and just cut back the number of flights, or we may see CRJ's fly the route sometimes. It could be a mix of RJ's and 319's.
Mark_D- I'm not sure if the 146's are more expensive than the F-28's, but I know that they have a lot of problems. There is always something wrong with them. We had two break down on the same day here at YYT earlier the summer.
Every couple of days, you see one of QK's flights late because of a maintenance issue with one of the jets.
They just seem to be always broken.
