Topic: RUMOR: WS Order 767?

I read somewhere that the Canadian airline was ordering 767-300s, the first of which would be in service June 2014. A YYC-YYZ-YYT-DUB route was mentioned. IF true, what would the seating

While hard to believe, could there be some validity to this? Anybody have any more information?

Thanks!

Link to this article? And YYC-YYZ-YYT-DUB defeats the purpose of a 767-300, you could add aux tanks to a 737 instead

This is not new nor a rumor. See the link below.

For that routing you wouldn't even need auxilliary tanks. YYT-DUB is up to 600 miles shorter than some current WS nonstops such as YVR-HNL.

Well the WS announcement of DUB service direct from YYZ via a stop in YYT using a 737 seems to be the test for potential future widebody expansion. It'll be a tight market for profit I would think since they'll have to compete with TS as well as AC.

EI are also starting DUB-Posted 2013-11-15 06:10:58 and read 17083 times.

I do think they have a market, as several people, especially Calgarians, are extremely favoritist towards Westjet, and would love to see them fly across the pond, and give AC a run for their money

Don't forget competing with EI on the YYZ-DUB route starting in April.

This is absolutely ridiculous. You must of misheard what the rumour was as why would WS purchase/lease an aircraft so far removed from their present fleet to fly between Ireland and Canada. They could easily utilize their present fleet and not introduce an aircraft for only one route. I would like to know where you heard that rumour and if you could post any information you had to back up your assertion.

This could be a mixing of valid information into a rumour. WestJet has announced YYT-DUB and is being discussed in another thread. Every year WS leases 757's for YYC/YEG-Hawaii non-stops. Sometimes, when the 757 go maintenance, a 767 can be brought in by the leasing company. So again, could be airport talkers (what I call people who know just enough to make a mess of things) that are mixing together two unrelated actions.

Though, in all fairness, this thread was up a few hours before the other one!   Just kidding, it is better discussed in the other one.

Very probably what happened. Thanks!

LOL, this again?

Last time WS was allegedly buying up Z4's fleet after they went out of business. I doubt this rumor is going to be any more legitimate.

Is the 767-300 still being built?

Yes !
Although the production line is open only tankers for the military are built at the moment IIRC.
It´s no problem to build passenger 767 along the military ones. That´s why anyone whishing to buy factory new pax 767´s can do so.

I think if they truly had any intentions to start that kind of service with that kind of airliner, they'd start with a leased plane to test it, and then maybe give it a try with their own metal IF it worked well enough for them. Frankly, I don't think it would happen anytime soon. And what about the routing ? Why stop at YYT then ?

AFAIK KC, LA and FX still has 767-300ER's on order.

That was my thinking too, which is why I had a hard time believing it fully.

It would be nice if WS opted for the B-767-400ER over the B-767-300ER.

There's also the question of turnaround time at destination. The flight announced to DUB will have a 80 minutes turnaround. How long should it be with a wide-body to unload, clean, load and refuel that many passengers and their luggages?

No, as we speak there are mainly civil 767s built, this year even some passenger ones for LAN and Air Astana. That being said it's very unlikely WestJet would still buy 767s this late in its production cycle.

WestJet has said it has looked at "larger aircraft" but have decided the time was not right. I believe that was earlier this year. I see the rumour being hints of the true cross Atlantic flights with the fact that they had looked at widebodies and like said about truth connected with half-truth. I see the Newfoundland scissor hub a bit of a test with a price sensitive market. If it works they can build up some volume with a few other destinations. If they can siphon enough off of Rouge and prevent some to go to Air Lingus, and add some destinations, then you might start to see more interest again in a widebody.

Very unlikely, the 764 has less range than the 763 and cost more. Plus, I don't know how willing Boeing would be to re-open the production line just for WS.
