Assuming that it is 2:40 Subang time, it has been missing for almost 6 hours. Airliners don't disappear for 6 hours and then reappear.  Sad

9M-MRO was involved in an accident in 2012. The wing hit the tail of a China Eastern A340 with the tip left hanging. Not serious but noteworthy.

From flight radar seems the aircraft was airborne for no more than an hour...

If it has crashed after a sudden failure at altitude, (no record of a mayday) then the options are quite limited.

It's been almost 7 hours since contact was lost. The likely result is a sad one. But I don't think it should be like the AF 447 since it wasn't crossing the ocean and radars are not that far appart. Anyways, I am surprised it's taking so long to get better information.

Very bad news indeed. One hopes for the best but in 2014 aircraft don't generally go "missing" and not show up to their destination, so obviously something very bad has happened. The sad reality is what we all are scared of, that the likelihood of this being anything other than a crash is, at this point, unlikely. Not impossible, but unlikely.

My hopes are for survivors; my thoughts are with the families of those on-board who have to deal with the lack of knowing and the fear of not wanting to find out.

well if it was two or so hours into the flight you'd expect it to be about 900nm from KUL

so it may have come down just off the coast of Vietnam.

light area = 900nm from KUL

Saw it on Russia Today about 10 minutes ago..and the only thing I can think of right now is Oh no, not again!, this just sounds like another AF447 (I'm only talking about the disappearance part). If this T7 crashed it won't be good for the public image of Boeing, first the OZ T7 crash this summer and then the many issues with there B787 program, all this does not make for a good public image. Lets hope they find them...but to be honest I doubt we will find any survivors.

1. Structural failure, (reply 26).

2. Weather.

3. Bomb, (but who has a grudge against Malaysia).

I find the idea of a catastrophic structural failure on a 777 operated by MAS to be pretty unthinkable but I guess anything is possible... Weather seems okay round there from what I've heard but I also heard that an A330 10 minutes or so ahead of it diverted round weather. So who knows at this stage... Terrorism seems, to me, more likely than a structural failure but we don't have anything to go on at this point...

Could well turn out to be another high altitude loss of control, like AF 447, though. Far too early to point fingers at anyone though of course, we have literally no clue yet what has happened...

Quoting bennett123 (Reply 40):
If there was a belly landing, how long would it float?.

Depends entirely on the circumstances... In theory, if the hull is not breached, an aircraft should be able to stay afloat for hours, if not more. However we have very little data to go on when it comes to widebody jets ditching - there has been only one attempt, a Ethiopian 767, and that didn't go well (but was clearly atypical as hijackers were fighting with the crew when it hit the water). However from previous examples of open-water ditchings, the hull is usually breached due to the fact that the water is usually far less calm than rivers and lakes, especially when there is a storm about... If the hull is breached, even if it's a clean ditch, you can probably only count on around 10 minutes or so afloat, maybe a little more.

Also, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrorism_in_Malaysia

Of note

Malaysia Airlines Flight 653 crashed at Tanjung Kupang, Johor, on the evening of December 4, 1977,[7] the result of an apparent hijacking by unknown assailants as soon as it reached cruise altitude. It was the first and deadliest fatal accident for Malaysia Airlines, with all 93 passengers and 7 crew, from 13 countries,[8] killed instantly.[9][10] The plane had been en route from Penang International Airport to Singapore International Airport (Paya Lebar) via Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport. The circumstances in which the hijacking and subsequent crash occurred remain unsolved.

disclaimer, I am just presenting information. I hope for the best possible outcome.

Always hate to hear about this kind of stuff. Definitely surprised it's a 777 -- it has a truly proven, impeccable flight record. I think the odds of it being a mechanical flaw is somewhat unlikely, as with nearly all incidents and accidents of newer, western-built aircraft these days (of course I'm not pretending to speculate on a cause...just a general statement, so please don't flame me!).

Of course everyone hopes for a positive outcome, but given the length of time out of contact, the chances of a positive outcome of any kind are diminished by the second. If it did go down, my thoughts are with the families. We're very fortunate in that these crashes are now a rarity, but they do remind us all of the dangers that do exist in this incredibly safe industry.

All signs report to the OZ crash being attributed to pilot error not the aircraft.

Likewise we do not know if this is even an incident yet, and if it is, it could be do to pilot error, suicide by pilot, mid-air collision, terrorism, act of God, poor maintenance practices, error by ATC, or any number of possible explanations.

We need some patience as well as facts.

If there was a belly landing, how long would it float?.

Another avenue for investigation is the military tensions between China and the ASEAN states

There is the possibility of a miscalculation or a mistake.

Most of the heightened military activity is naval though

It would have to be a ballistic missile, and those aren't remotely accurate enough to hit a moving target, particularly one moving as fast as, and as relatively small as, an airliner. Plus, if anything was launched, we'd know.

I believe we can safely rule that out.

Firstly, I hope that a miracle may happen.

Secondly, there is a significant political context at both ends of this flight. We all know about the separatist movement in western China and the Kunming railway massacre this week. But yesterday a court convicted Malaysia's main opposition leader of sodomy charges which have been widely criticised inside and outside Malaysia.

So if there has been a disaster there are political as well as mechanical hypotheses which need to be evaluated.

Safety record as in having no fatilities (i am not saying that the aircraft is unsafe per se). All i am saying is that there has been a hull loss with a fatality in the case of OZ and POTENTIALLY (potentially being the keyword) in the MH case. That is all there is to it in my post when i said that the safety record of having NO fatalities on the 777 has ended with the OZ crash. Cause is a different ballgame as the OZ crash final report is not yet out.

AF447 loss does not make the aircraft unsafe perse but when folks (including pilots) talk of it in loose terms say that yes, there has been an A330 hull loss with fatalities so it does not have a 100% safety record.

Via CNN:

"[retired AA pilot] said the plane is 'about as sophisticated as any commercial airplane could possibly be,' with an excellent safety record.

There is one recent blemish: An Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 carrying 291 passengers struck a seawall at San Francisco International Airport in July 2013, killing three people and wounding dozens more."

Even news is trying to get people to jump to conclusions. Nothing about OZ214 had anything to do with the safety of the 777. Not to mention this is an entirely different situation.

When an aircraft is 'lost' at cruise altitude - the safest phase of flight - it's natural to speculate at this early time.
Time will find a cause for this missing aircraft but now speculation is natural.

I think people get upset about the crazy wild speculations. This event may have a bizarre cause, but with no info now the best speculations would be things like pressurization accident, jet aircraft upset at high altitude, etc.

Part of the problem with wild speculation is that it tends to drown out actual facts. It makes discussions like this difficult to follow, especially since nowadays, any major incident is going to grow to a 250+ post thread (in 2, 3 or 4 parts) within a day or so.

Also, I wish CNN would correct their map or at least footnote it. It gives the impression of the flight path, which I don't believe is correct (based on what I read here).

It's around 9am in Vietnam, the area others have speculated. If it was over water, off the coast, I certainly hope for the best. But being at night, situational awareness would be tough with a dark sky and dark water.

I hope for the best.

No recent commercial airplane has anything less than a perfectly fine design and no inherent desing flaw. Not the 777, not the A330 and no other product at least from Airbus and Boeing. All incidents or accidents have to do with pilot error, weather or improper maintenance or the lack of it. With the known facts to date this seems to be a case of "it fell from the sky". Why this happened is something we will find out very soon if it did in fact

It is not about the media trying to bash the 777 or the 787 or anything to that effect

Well, a Fuel Oil Heat Exchanger design flaw brought the 777 down at LHR! And there were 2 737s that crashed because of a design flaw in the rudder Power Control Unit. The QF A 380's RR engine had a design flaw which caused it to come back to Singapore. Just throwing some facts out there to say what you just stated is not true. Not saying these aircrafts are unsafe; they are perfectly safe to fly in...it is just that they are machines and will have flaws in them which eventually get rectified and fixed.

This is an aviation fansite and this literally broke an hour ago. This is exactly what should happen. No officials are turning to Airliners.net for answers. Give it a few days and we will narrow it down to a few options and it will continue to narrow as the weeks and months go on.

Not one of your claims is actually true though.

BA 772 LHR incident was about ice crystalls in the fuel system. Not a design flaw.

737 rudder hard turn that claimed many lives ( although that was at least 20 years ago so not "recent" ) was more of a mechanical problem (literally loose screw) than a design flaw

QF 380 problem again an engine problem (not an airframe problem) was about the oil pump not being the proper size with adjacent components. Again a mechanical (proper parts problem) than a desing flaw

You get ice crystals in fuel because of water in the fuel (there's always some water in fuel). The aircraft/engine designers did not design the fuel.

Let me rephrase then: It is not an aerodynamic inherent problem with the plane or even something that came off the production line as faulty. Boeing had a sollution for ice crystals and it was incorporated in the production. As with most of the problems having to do with the elements at some time another aspect is going to arise. It did and it was indeed fixed.

Safe to say the plane is lost and the passengers are dead. That is not going too far out on a limb. When planes drop off of radar, they don't show up hours later in one piece. But let's just hope it is not murder. Or worse, Silk Air 185 or Air Egypt 990 kind of murder. That is the unkindest cut of all.

This has happened to me in a different way but similar and that is what I did. One of the first things you do is phone home: HDQ's. You can do it from the left seat. It could be. If this was the case the pilots priority would be to get it down to the ground asap before it became uncontrolable. Based on the aircraft last known location that could have meant a ditching and water evacuation.

Having flown over the Gulf if Thailand many times no doubt it will turn up soon.
The Gulf is full of thousands and i mean thousands of fishing boats.
Enough that you coukd almost mistake the water for a star filled sky.
The weather in my experience is generally fairly benign this time of year with the monsoon in the Southern hemisphere.
Ho Chi Minh uses datalink for primary comms so getting out a distress message would not be as easy as via Vhfut a call should of if possible been put out on vhf anyway.
Sounds sudden..guess we will find out at some point soon but i doubt it will be long just due to the incredible number of shipping traffic.

My hearts and prayers go out to those on board and those who were close to them.

Based on what I've been reading about this accident/incident, if it does turn out to be a crash, then I think the most likely explanations are as follows:

1. Murder-suicide: Similar to SilkAir 185, EgyptAir 990, and/or Mozambique 470.

2. Catastrophic pilot error or mechanical failure which left the crew with insufficient time to make a distress call.

3. Sabotage (bomb and/or hijacking) - perhaps involving one or more pilots and/or crew members on board.
