What airline has the record for ordering the most aircraft in one single order from a manufacturer?

One of the biggest orers ever must have been when UA launched the 777. The order placed 15 October 1990, included 34 777, plus 34 more options and 60 747-400, worth a total of $22 billion  .
I think all of the 777's have been delivered, but I don't know about the 744's.

On November 3, US Airways finally confirmed its order for up to 400 Airbus Industrie aircraft. Deliveries are set to begin in the fourth quarter of 1998. US Airways said it has signed a firm contract for 124 aircraft in the Airbus single-aisle family, with six A319 airplanes to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 1998 and 15 more in 1999, along with five A320s. The company said deliveries will substantially increase in 2000. All US Airways options and orders to be confirmed total 400 aircraft.

Goodness. FOUR HUNDRED aircraft? For crying out loud, whatever are they doing with FOUR HUNDRED new aircraft?

I think WN ordered over 100+ B737NGs all at once. aint that big? i mean all the others like BA 50+ B744, some of them ordered subsequently. correct me if i am wrong though.

That is mostly options. and bsides even if they were firm most would have been defered.

In terms of dollar value, UA's 34 B777 + 34 B744 firm orders still remain to be the biggest order placed with a single airframer. Emirates' orders, when signed, will probably have a higher dollar value, based on EK's press release which has some questionable math. Assuming EK's press release is correct, it is still split between two airframers. UA had canceled many B744 orders. I also doubt EK will be able to take all the 58 planes.

US Airways' A320 order consisted of only 124 firm orders which would have a face value of about US$6b (vs. UA's US$11b and EK's US$15b).

Delta Connection - Comair and Atlantic Southeast. 500 CRJs (104 firm, 396 options). Deliveries have just started.

Carmy: What to do with 400 new aircraft?? Well how about replacing the old ones.
As for who placed the largest orders: If you don't make difference between single order and ongoing orders, none of the above. The biggest and by far most powerful customers of Airbus and Boeing are 2 companies: GECAS and ILFC, the latter being No. 1 overall. Their are ordering over 100 aircraft EVERY SINGLE YEAR!

Was it not a strange airline that ordered 44 L1011's from Delta ??

Two AA orders come to mind:
First the large MD-80 order placed in the early 80's. I don't remember the initial size but wasn't it around 150 and then got bumped up to 250 later on.

Secondly the order they placed in 1996 when that signed a 20 year contract which included:
75 737NG's (they hadn't picked a model at this point)
12 777-200's
12 757-200's
4 767-300ER's
For a total of 103 aircraft plus options for 527 aircraft over 20 years.

What about PanAm?

Didn't they place some very large Boeing orders in the 1960's/1970's ??

Didn't AA ordered 75 F-100s at once? Maybe it's not the biggest in dollar terms, but still a big order.

Lax, Pan Am ordered 25 Boeing 747-100's in 1966 as the launch order for the Boeing 747. Back then, it was the largest order ever for commercial aircraft from one airline. But now I think its the UAL 777 and 747 order in 1990 that is the icing on the cake!
